Antique jewelry object group: flexible bracelets/bangles
Country of origin: Netherlands
(more info on styles)
Source of inspiration: Antique jewelry. Although recently made, the artist making this bracelet was clearly inspired by the Victorian style. In the Netherlands this type of jewelry has always been very popular. Therefore it is no surprise that till late in the 20th Century the Dutch goldsmiths were reproducing it.
Extra information: Although we cannot find the makers mark on this jewel we do know which jeweler sold it. The bracelet comes in a box with the logo and name of "Van Hout Ververgaard", jeweler in Eindhoven, Netherlands since 1929.
Period: ca. 1955
(events and facts in 1955)
Material: Silver on top and backed with 14K yellow gold (see explanation on silver on gold).

Technique: This technique finds its origin centuries ago, when jewelers believed that only a silver mounting could render the true beauty of a diamond. Backing the silver jewel with a (thin) layer of gold was a practical precaution taken to avoid the silver jewelry leaving black stains on clothing or skin. Over the years, with the recognition (and thus use) of platinum as precious metal and the development of white gold the practical necessity to use bi-colored material became obsolete. The argument to use bi-colored metals became more an estetic then a practical one.
Diamonds: 143 rose cut diamonds. We do not have the weight of the diamonds which is normal in our trade when it comes to rose cuts.
Birthstones: Diamond is the birthstone (or month stone) for April.
