Art Deco Colombian emerald engagement ring diamond

We are proud to present you here a ring with a truly magnificent Colombian emerald. This is how one wants to have an emerald. The velvetish warm green color of this stone makes it a true gem. Mounted with yellow gold prawns in an entourage of small old mine cut diamonds (no less then 62) and set in platinum gives an overall chique and yet unpretentious design. Look and enjoy!

Antique jewelry object group: engagement ring

Country of origin: Although it does not carry any legible control marks we believe this to be of Belgian origin.

Style: Art Deco
(more info on styles)

Style specifics: Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period.

Period: ca. 1930
(events and facts in 1930)

Material: 18K yellow gold and platinum
(more info on precious metals)

Technique: Although the back of this jewel is in yellow gold, the diamonds are set in platinum. This finds it origin in a much older period where it was common for diamonds to be set in silver (see also explanation on silver on gold).

Extra information: Betrothal rings were used during Roman times, but weren't generally revived in the Western world until the 13th century. The first well-documented use of a diamond ring to signify engagement was by the Archduke Maximilian of Austria in imperial court of Vienna in 1477, upon his betrothal to Mary of Burgundy.

Before the 20th century, other types of betrothal gifts were common. Before the end of the 19th century, the bride-to-be frequently received a sewing thimble rather than a engagement ring. This practice was particularly common among religious groups that shunned jewelry. Engagement rings didn't become standard in the West until the end of the 19th century, and diamond rings didn't become common until the 1930s. Now, 80% of the women are offered a diamond ring to signify engagement. (from: Wikipedia)

Muzo emerald - There are emeralds and then there are Muzo emeralds. Prized for their rarity and intense green colour that has come to symbolised eternal spring and abundance, Muzo emeralds have a mystical allure that has transcended trends and endured for centuries. The Mogul emperors and the Maharajahs were so enamoured with emeralds that they had adorned their crowns and embellished their thrones with this gemstone. Their emerald collection was so extensive that people thought India had a secret mine centuries ago, but those emeralds actually came from Muzo. To this day, the centuries-old mines continue to produce top quality-gemstones, and it is believed that mining operations will remain active in the years come. However the stones from the old-Muzo mines are believed to be even better than the stones produced by the new Muzo mines.

Located in the western foothills of the eastern range of the Colombian Andes, about 96 km northeast of the Colombian capital city Bogotá, Muzo is considered the largest and the most prestigious of Colombia’s mining areas.

Muzo emeralds are widely known for their depth of colour and their richness of pure green with a hint of blue or yellow, the world's highest quality gems of this type. They can be found in large sizes and with wonderful transparency. Colour, which is the most important factor, size and transparency place Muzo on the mountain’s peak for the world’s finest emeralds. Probably the most incredible nature of Muzo is that it not only produces the finest quality emerald in the world, it has been doing so since the Spaniards came to Colombia several hundred years ago, and possibly as far back as the 1500s.

The saturated green of Muzo emeralds is unrivalled in the gemstone world that when people think of “emerald colours,” they immediately think of Muzo. (see also: Wikipedia)

Jardin - French for "garden" - Is a group of three-phase, moss-like inclusions that are to be seen in almost every emerald and that constitute an acceptable, sometimes attractive, flaw.
