Conditions scale

A clear guide to how we describe wear, age, repairs, and overall integrity

What our condition labels mean

We use a simple condition scale to describe our antique, vintage, and estate jewellery as clearly as possible. Because many pieces are historic, a light trace of age can be normal and is not automatically negative. The condition label is a quick overview. The full description and photographs remain decisive, especially for any repair, replacement, alteration, or notable wear.

How to read the scale

The scale below focuses on visible wear and overall integrity. For antique and vintage jewels, gentle surface traces can be consistent with age and careful use. Where relevant, we also state any repair, replacement, alteration, resizing, restoration, or missing elements, so you can judge the piece in full context.

The five condition levels

As new

Looks like new, with no visible wear. No repair, replacement, or alteration.

Excellent

No meaningful trace of wear when worn or viewed normally. At most, the faintest surface trace under close inspection. Any restoration, if present, is professional, discreet, and stated.

Very good

Minor traces of wear consistent with careful use and age, typically visible only when looking closely. Small dents or softened details can be present but do not distract. Any repair, replacement, or alteration is stated.

Good

Visible wear in normal viewing. Small dents, softened edges, or surface marks can be present. The jewel remains sound, presentable, and wearable. Any repair, replacement, or alteration is stated.

Fair

Clear and visible wear, or multiple issues that affect appearance more noticeably. The jewel remains wearable and structurally sound unless stated otherwise. Any repair, replacement, or alteration is stated.

Repairs, replacements, and alterations

A condition label does not replace disclosure. If a jewel has been resized, repaired, restored, or modified, we state this in the description. The same applies to replaced elements such as clasps, safety chains, stems, pins, or later components.

Antique character and normal traces of age

Antique and vintage jewels can show gentle signs of time without being damaged. Light surface wear, mild softening of crisp edges, and small marks can be consistent with age and careful use. We aim to describe these traces plainly, so expectations stay realistic.
