It was Francis of Assisi who founded the Friars Minor (Lesser Brothers), after initially living a frivolous and carefree life until he seemed to hear an image of Christ in the Church of Damiano. Jesustold him "Francis, repair my falling house".Three years later, in 1210, Pope Innocent III authorized him and eleven companions to be roving preachers of Christ in simplicity and lowliness. The new movement soon began to develop into a religiousorder, which emphasized poverty, chastity and obedience.
