An article of jewelry (usually a brooch or a pendant) made in the form of a frog (or toad) and set with colored gemstones. Such pieces were worn as an amulet,as the frog had various symbolic significances in different countries, being in Rome the emblem of marital happiness. Examples are known in coclé jewelry as well as in pre-Columbian jewelry fromPanama and Costa Rica, the frog being sometimes depicted with bent legs and outspread, flat, stylized feet.
