Usually a restricting band worn around the thigh, calf, or upper arm to bind or secure clothing. It can also be ornamented.Members of the Order of the Garter in England, an order of knighthood begun in 1346 by Edward III, are entitled to wear a jeweled garter below the left knee, a badge or star bearing St. George's cross,and a collar used by this order bearing a badge depicting St. George and the Dragon.
