A technique of decoration in enamelling that is a modification of cloisonné enamel. The design of floralmotifs is made on the gold backplate of a piece by means of applied fine wire, and the enclosed design is filled in with enamels of appropriate colour. The range of colours used in the 16th centuryincluded blue, green, manganese, white, and yellow; later in the 17th century the enamels were painted over in various colours. The resulting appearance is of a design done byappliqué.
