Platinum diamond bar brooch with Art Deco influence, circa 1950

Platinum diamond bar brooch with Art Deco influence, circa 1950

Solidly made, with crisp lines and a powerful presence, this circa 1950 brooch has an assured character. Its platinum framework brings diamonds and pearls into a clearly defined geometric design. The precisely finished reverse carries that same clarity through to the back: a jewel with substance, strength and a clean sense of form.

Product details

Jewellery type: Diamond and pearl bar brooch.

Condition: Very good condition, with the diamond-set framework and supporting gallery well preserved.

Country of origin: unknown

Style: Fifties, with Art Deco influence. The elongated rectangular design combines a central sequence of pearls and round diamonds with crisp baguette accents.

Period: circa 1950

Material: Platinum, touchstone tested, with an 18K white gold pin, touchstone tested. Using the firmer white gold alloy for the pin was customary for the period, providing greater resistance to bending.

Technique: The brooch has a finely made “bâte”, the raised supporting rim beneath the diamond-set face. The reverse features neatly executed openwork with crisp lines and a precise finish. Experts often examine the back first when assessing workmanship; here, both front and back are a pleasure to admire.

Additional information: The tubular safety catch closes with a screw-thread mechanism, a refinement associated with high-quality brooches.

Diamonds: Seven natural round brilliant-cut diamonds with an estimated combined weight of 2.00 carats.
Twelve natural baguette-cut diamonds with an estimated combined weight of 1.20 carats.
Sixty-four natural single-cut diamonds, also known as eight-cut or 8/8 diamonds, with an estimated combined weight of 2.20 carats.
Overall assessment of the diamonds: colour E–G and clarity VVS–VS.

Diamond weights, colour and clarity are approximate, as the stones were assessed in their settings and were not removed for grading or weighing.

We individually screened every diamond in this brooch using the EXA Natural Diamond Detector developed by Magilabs; each test returned a natural-diamond result.

Total diamond weight: Approximately 5.40 carats.

Gemstones: Six pearls, most probably cultured. Their soft lustre provides a gentle contrast to the brilliance of the diamonds.

Traditional gemstone associations: Pearls are traditionally associated with June and symbolise purity. Diamond is the traditional birthstone for April and is associated with enduring love and strength.

Hallmarks: No trace of hallmarks was found.

Dimensions: 76.4 × 15.2 mm (3.01 × 0.60 in). See photograph with a millimetre scale.
