An ornament, usually a gemstone, worn inserted on one side of the nose by men and women in India, Pakistan, and countries of the Middle East. It is usually on the left side, but on the right in southern India. An example made of bone has been found from the Meroitic era in Nubia. The word used for a nose stud varies in different regions; it is sometimes called a chemki.
