Style
Victorian - Victorian decorative arts refers to the style of decorative arts during the Victorian era. The Victorian era is known for its eclectic revival and interpretation of historic styles and the introduction of cross-cultural influences from the middle east and Asia in furniture, fittings, and Interior decoration. Victorian design is widely viewed as having indulged in a regrettable excess of ornament. The Arts and Crafts movement, the aesthetic movement, Anglo-Japanese style, and Art Nouveau style have their beginnings in the late Victorian era.

Techniques
Enamelling is an old and widely-adopted technology. The ancient Egyptians applied enamels to pottery and stone objects. The ancient Greeks, Celts, Russians, and Chinese also used enameling processes on metal objects. Enamel is the colorful result of fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 degrees Celsius. The powder melts and flows and hardens to a smooth, durable vitreous coating on metal, glass or ceramic. According to some sources, the word enamel comes from the High German word smelzan (to smelt) via the Old French esmail. Used as a noun, "an enamel" is a usually small decorative object, coated with enamel coating, such as a champlevé or a cloisonné (different techniques).

Cameo is a method of carving, or an item of jewellery or vessel made in this manner. It features a raised (positive) relief image. There are three main materials for Cameo carving; Shells or Agate (called a Hardstone cameo), and glass. Cameos can be produced by setting a carved relief, such as a portrait, onto a background of a contrasting colour. This is called an assembled cameo. Alternately, a cameo can be carved directly out of a material with integral layers or banding, such as (banded) agate or layered glass, where different layers have different colours. Sometimes dyes are used to enhance these colours. Cameos are often worn as jewellery. Stone cameos of great artistry were made in Greece dating back as far as the 6th century BC. They were very popular in Ancient Rome, and one of the most famous stone cameos from this period is the Gemma Claudia made for the Emperor Claudius. The technique has since enjoyed periodic revivals, notably in the early Renaissance, and again in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

Style specifics
The Belle Époque (French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century from the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) and lasted until World War I (1914-18).

Occurring during the time of the French Third Republic and the German Empire, the "Belle Époque" was named in retrospect, when it began to be considered a "golden age" the major powers of Europe, new technologies improved lives and the commercial arts adapted Renaissance and eighteenth-century styles to modern forms.

In the newly rich United States, emerging from the Panic of 1873, the comparable epoch was dubbed the Gilded Age. In the United Kingdom, this epoch overlaps the end of what is called the Victorian Era there and the period named the Edwardian Era.

In the Belle Époque cheap coal and cheap labour contributed to the cult of the orchid and made possible the perfection of fruits grown under glass, as the apparatus of state dinners extended to the upper classes; champagne was perfected during the Belle Époque. Exotic feathers and furs were more prominently featured in fashion than ever before, as haute couture was invented in Paris, the centre of the Belle Époque, where fashion began to move in a yearly cycle; in Paris restaurants such as Maxim's achieved a new splendour and cachet as places for the rich to parade, and the Opéra Garnier devoted enormous spaces to staircases as similar show places.

After mid-century, railways linked all the major cities of Europe to spa towns like Biarritz and Deauville; their carriages were rigorously divided into first-class and second-class, but the super-rich now began to commission private railway coaches, as exclusivity was a hallmark of opulent luxury. Bohemian lifestyles gained a different glamour, pursued in the cabarets of Montmartre.

Extra information
Diamond is the birthstone for the month of April, and besides being the most popular gemstone for engagement rings, it is also the anniversary gem for the 10th and 60th years of marriage.

Even though the diamond is the hardest of all gemstones known to man, it is the simplest in composition: it is common carbon. The ancient Greeks believed that diamonds were splinters of stars fallen to earth. It was even said by some that they were the tears of the Gods or perhaps crystallized lightning or hardened dew drops. The exact origin of diamonds remained something of a mystery for centuries.

In ancient times only kings wore diamonds as a symbol of strength, courage and invincibility. Over the centuries, the diamond acquired its unique status as the ultimate gift of love. It was said that Cupid's arrows were tipped with diamonds which have a magic that nothing else can ever quite equal.

But it wasn't until 1477, when Archduke Maximillian of Austria gave a diamond ring to Mary of Burgundy, that the tradition of diamond engagement rings began. Even the reason a woman wears it on the third finger of her left hand dates back to the early Egyptian belief that the vena amoris (vein of love) ran directly from the heart to the top of the third finger, left hand.

Product story

A paragon of Victorian elegance, this bead necklace with 108 thick blood coral beads, dating back to circa 1900, is steeped in cultural significance. Each bead, varying from 10mm to 12mm, is a tribute to the Buddhist tradition of meditation and mindfulness, representing the mortal desires of mankind. The necklace, with its substantial length of 100cm, is not just a piece of jewellery but a spiritual talisman, a connection to the rich tapestry of history and the pursuit of enlightenment.

Precious stones: 108 coral beads with a diameter between 10mm and 12mm

Extra information: Conventional Buddhist tradition counts the beads at 108, signifying the mortal desires of mankind. The number is attributed to the Mokugenji (soapberry seed) Sutra wherein Shakyamuni Buddha instructed King Virudhaka to make such beads and recite the Three Jewels of Buddhism. In later years, various Buddhist sects would either retain the number of beads, or divide them into consecutive twos, fours, for brevity or informality.

A decorative tassel is sometimes attached to the beads, flanked by talismans or amulets depending on one's local tradition. Because prayer beads are often painted in pigment, various traditional schools attribute a consecration ritual by the Sangha to the beads, to "open the eyes" for the purpose of achieving Enlightenment unique to the Karma of each believer. Product story

This platinum bracelet from the early 1950s is a substantial example of mid-century diamond craftsmanship. Its broad, articulated construction allows the piece to fall naturally on the wrist, while more than fifty-four carats of diamonds in high colour and clarity create a striking, deliberate brilliance. The assured design and well-resolved structure reflect the period’s renewed appetite for luxury, achieved through discipline and technical competence rather than excess.

The lady who brought the bracelet to us explained that she had inherited it from her mother. Her father, a prominent Antwerp diamond merchant, selected the stones from his own stock, choosing only those he considered his finest. He then engaged a high-quality atelier to create the design and commissioned the bracelet as a personal gift for his wife. She described this provenance as part of her family history, and our own examination of the piece, in both the consistency of the diamond quality and the precision of the construction, aligns closely with her story.

Seen in this light, the bracelet is both an impressive diamond jewel and a carefully conceived work of craftsmanship. Its scale, coherence and assured construction reflect the expertise and intention that shaped it, and there is a quiet sense of personal devotion in the care with which the stones were chosen and the piece realised. These qualities remain evident in the bracelet itself and become almost tangible once its story is known.

Style specifics
This type of jewellery is highly characteristic of the 1950s. Although the Art Deco period had ended only two decades earlier, its geometric language remained a strong source of inspiration. The abundant pavé work and sculptural volume, however, clearly place this bracelet within the post-war Fifties idiom, which often makes it challenging, even for trained experts, to distinguish it from late Art Deco creations.

  • A natural environment for wide, luxurious diamond bracelets such as this one.

Style
Art Deco - Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style which had its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century. The style originated in the 1920s and continued to be employed until after World War II. The term "art deco" first saw wide use after an exhibition in 1966, referring to the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes that was the culmination of high-end style modern in Paris. Led by the best designers in the decorative arts such as fashion, and interior design, Art Deco affected all areas of design throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including architecture and industrial design, as well as the visual arts such as painting, the graphic arts and film. At the time, this style was seen as elegant, glamorous, functional and modern.

Style specifics
Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period. Art Deco moved away from the soft pastels and organic forms of its style predecessor, Art Nouveau, and embraced influences from many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative.

Style specifics
Baroque is a style in art and decoration that developed shortly before 1600 and remained current in Europe until the emergence of the Rococo style c.1730. It was started in Italy, and spread to Germany, Austria, the Low Countries, and Spain and Portugal, with only a somewhat severely classical version being popular in France under Louis XIV. The style was a development of the Renaissance style and is characterized by lively, curved, and exuberant forms, by vigorous movement, and by rich ornament, based on classical sources, being symmetrical as distinguished from the asymmetry of the following Rococo style.

Product story

This enchanting brooch from the 1920s, straddling the Art Deco and Belle Époque styles, is a beautiful ode to either the hunting tradition or the deep affection for a beloved canine companion. It features a masterful reversed intaglio of a Jack Russell Terrier on rock crystal, backed with mother-of-pearl, and encircled by 24 rose cut diamonds and 24 carré cut rubies set in 18K yellow gold and white gold or platinum. The detailed intaglio work, characteristic of late Victorian craftsmanship, vividly brings the terrier to life, symbolizing either the thrill of the hunt or a heartfelt tribute to a cherished pet. This brooch encapsulates the early 20th-century's appreciation for nature, animals, and the bonds they represent.

Style: Something between Art Deco and Belle Époque
- Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style which had its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century. -  See also: Art Deco.

And the Belle Époque (French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century and lasted until World War I. Style specifics: This is something between Belle Époque and Art Deco.
The Belle Époque
(French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century from the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) and lasted until World War I (1914-18).

Art Deco
Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period. Art Deco moved away from the soft pastels and organic forms of its style predecessor, Art Nouveau, and embraced influences from many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative.

Technique: Reversed intaglio (see the next explanation on English Crystal)

Extra information (01): Reverse intaglio crystal or English Crystal - A crystal cut in the form of a cabochon, shallow or domes, that is carved in intaglio on it flat back with a motif that is realistically painted in minute detail and is surrounded by a transparent ground. The deeper the carving, the more pronounced the three-dimensional trompe l'oeil effect, which is sometimes enhanced by a backing of thin layer of mother-of-pearl. The carved motif, for pieces mounted in a circular gold band as a tie pin, cuff links, button, or studs for men, was usually a racing horse, game bird or dog, and for pieces in a brooch or a locket for women, a floral design or a monogram; some examples depict an insect or a coaching scene.

Sometimes two crystals are mounted back-to-back to form a spherical pendant, preferably with the motifs not identical but complementarily depicting the front and back views of the same subject, e.g. the head of a dog. Some examples consist of two or even three superimposed hollow cabochons, each carved with a different motif, thus increasing the effect of perspective.

The technique was originated by Marius Pradier, of Belgium, c. 1860 (he made the only known-signed example). In England it was developed by Thomas Cook in the early 1860s and carried on by his pupil Thomas Bean and the latter's son Edmund and grandson Edgar (d. 1954).

After the popularity of the pieces in the late Victorian era, the high quality deteriorated by the 1920s, when examples were also being made in France and the United States (some modern pieces depicting motor cars and aeroplanes). The crystals have long been identified with the Hancocks firm. The crystals have sometimes been referred to by the misnomers 'Essex Crystal' or 'Wessex crystal', owing to the erroneous assumption that they were decorated c. 1860 by the enamel portrait painter William Essex (d. 1869).

Imitations have been made of carved and painted glass, and even of a glass cabochon above a printed paper design.

Extra information (02): Jack Russell Terrier - The Jack Russell Terrier is a small terrier that has its origins in fox hunting in England. It is principally white-bodied and smooth, rough or broken-coated and can be any colour.

The small white fox-working terriers we know today were first bred by the Reverend John Russell, a parson and hunting enthusiast born in 1795, and they can trace their origin to the now extinct English white terrier. Difficulty in differentiating the dog from the creature it was pursuing brought about the need for a mostly white dog, and so in 1819 during his last year of university at Exeter College, Oxford, he purchased a small white and tan terrier female named Trump from a local milkman in the nearby small hamlet of Elsfield or Marston.

Trump epitomised his ideal fox terrier, which, at the time, was a term used for any terrier which was used to bolt foxes out of their burrows. Her colouring was described as "...white, with just a patch of dark tan over each eye and ear; whilst a similar dot, not larger than a penny piece, marks the root of the tail." Davies, a friend of Russell's, wrote: "Trump was such an animal as Russell had only seen in his dreams".

She was the basis for a breeding program to develop a terrier with high stamina for the hunt as well as the courage and formation to chase out foxes that had gone to ground. By the 1850s, these dogs were recognised as a distinct breed. From: Wikipedia)

Baroque - Baroque is an artistic style prevalent from the late 16th century to the early 18th century in Europe.

Style
An eclectic design style born in Paris in the early 20th century, Art Deco flourished from the 1920s and remained influential well into the post-war years. The name itself only gained popularity after a 1966 exhibition referencing the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, the high point of this luxurious modern style. Led by the most prominent designers in fashion, interior design and the decorative arts, Art Deco influenced nearly every creative domain: from architecture and industrial design to painting, graphic arts and cinema. At the time, it was considered the epitome of elegance, glamour, functionality and modernity.

Style specifics
Abstract motifs and geometric forms are hallmarks of the Art Deco period. The style departed from the pastel shades and flowing lines of its predecessor, Art Nouveau, and drew inspiration from early 20th-century movements such as Neoclassicism, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism and Futurism. Its popularity reached a peak in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and remained strong in the United States throughout the 1930s. While many design movements reflect deeper political or philosophical ideas, Art Deco was above all a celebration of decorative beauty.

Product story

This Georgian diamond cross, a testament to antiquity and devotion, stands as a regal emblem of the early 18th century. Its meticulously arranged old table and rose cut diamonds, embedded with four senailles, reflect an era where craftsmanship met spiritual expression. The absence of hallmarks lends an air of mystery, inviting wonder about its journey through time. Embodying the Georgian style, synonymous with the reign of the British House of Hanover, this pendant transcends mere adornment, becoming a beacon of historical and religious resonance. Its creation, inspired by the universal symbol of the cross, encapsulates both the artistic and spiritual ethos of its time.

Product story

A quintessential bracelet from the Grand Victorian Period, circa 1870, embodies the era's magnificence. Crafted from 18k red gold and silver, it features 25 meticulously set rose-cut diamonds complemented by a central natural orient saltwater pearl, flanked by five strands of delicate pearls. This exquisite piece, presumed Belgian, showcases the opulent design characteristic of the late Victorian aesthetic, influenced by global artistry, yet distinctly Western in execution. A testament to the period's rich cultural tapestry and ornate sensibilities.

Style: Victorian - Victorian decorative arts refers to the style of decorative arts during the Victorian era.

Style specifics: The Grand Victorian Period - Experts divide the reign of Queen Victoria, also called The Victorian era (1837 - 1901) into three periods of about twenty years each; The Romantic Victorian Period (1837 - 1860), The Grand Victorian Period (1860 - 1880), and the Late or Aesthetic Victorian Period (1880 - 1901).

We consider this to be of the Grand Victorian Period.

This second Victorian period is famous for its ostentatious pieces set with pearls and diamonds (from South Africa). From ca. 1850 wealthy English had reported about jewelry from India and Japan, which heavily inspired the jewelers of this period. This period also corresponds with the death of Queen Victoria's husband King Albert making mourning jewelry (set with heavy dark stones) the type of jewelry specific for this period.

The design showcases fourteen oval citrines, their honeyed glow framed by delicate scrolls of gold wire. Technique
Granulation is a technique where the goldsmith uses very small balls (granules) of metal, which are not soldered to the piece but welded. This technique demand very high skills and precision from the maker. And filigree (formerly written filigrann or filigrane) which is a delicate kind of jewel work made with twisted threads usually of gold and silver or stitching of the same curving motifs. It often suggests lace and French from 1660 to the late 19th century. It should not be confused with ajoure jewellery work; while both have many open areas, filigree involves threads being soldered together to form an object and ajoure involves holes being punched, drilled, or cut through an existing piece of metal. Product story

A striking Victorian hinged bangle of about 1870, this Neo Egyptian jewel is richly set with scarabs picked out in rose cut diamonds, sapphires and emeralds. The design belongs to that 19th century moment when Europe looked again towards Egypt with curiosity and imagination, translating ancient motifs into fashionable ornament. Its broad gold form, silver accents and repeated scarab figures give it both presence and rhythm. An unusual bracelet, decorative yet scholarly in spirit, it feels like a small revivalist monument made to be worn.

This exceptional bar brooch, crafted in 14K yellow gold with silver details, blends Victorian elegance with mid-20th-century craftsmanship. Its centrepiece is a remarkably large pear-shaped rose-cut diamond, surrounded by thirteen smaller rose-cut diamonds and senailles, all set on foil to enhance their lustre. The crowned heart motif, a timeless emblem of love and romance, adds symbolic depth to its intricate design. The setting for the central diamond appears to date from the early 19th century, while the brooch as a whole was created post-1952, likely incorporating antique elements. A true testament to enduring beauty and sentimentality.
