Country of origin
"The Southern Netherlands" refers to the historical term used for the southern region that encompasses present-day Belgium and the southern part of the Netherlands. (Belgium gained independence from the Netherlands in 1831.)
To be more precise, we are contemplating the possibility of a small town in the vicinity of Roermond or Maastricht.

Style
Baroque - Baroque is an artistic style prevalent from the late 16th century to the early 18th century in Europe. It is most often defined as "the dominant style of art in Europe between the Mannerist and Rococo eras, a style characterized by dynamic movement, overt emotion and self-confident rhetoric".

Style specifics
Baroque is a style in art and decoration that developed shortly before 1600 and remained current in Europe until the emergence of the Rococo style c.1730. It was started in Italy, and spread to Germany, Austria, the Low Countries, and Spain and Portugal, with only a somewhat severely classical version being popular in France under Louis XIV. The style was a development of the Renaissance style and is characterized by lively, curved, and exuberant forms, by vigorous movement, and by rich ornament, based on classical sources, being symmetrical as distinguished from the asymmetry of the following Rococo style.

Period
ca. 1670

Source of inspiration
Affection and Love - This is what's known as a Claddagh or Fede Ring. The term 'fede ring' is derived from the Italian phrase 'mani in fede,' which translates to 'hands joined in loyalty.' These rings represent affection through the heart, camaraderie through the hands, and allegiance through the crown.

Material
high carat yellow gold (higher alloy than 18K)

Extra information
While this ring likely originates from around 1670 and was probably crafted in the Southern Netherlands, its design draws inspiration from the Claddagh style, which has deep Irish origins and is traditionally linked to Claddagh, a coastal village near Galway in Ireland.

Hallmarks
One hallmark showcases a capital 'K' encircled within a standing 5-pointed star, while the other hallmark, in a rectangular shape with truncated corners, bears two capital letters, 'T' and 'B'.

The Shaman's Enigma: A Celestial Pre-Columbian Gold Pendant from the Depths of Antiquity

Product story

In the realm of ancient treasures, the discovery and presentation of this pre-Columbian artifact, dated around 400 CE, is infused with a profound sense of exhilaration. With meticulous research through libraries, museum collections, and auctions, the narrative of this gold bird pendant with human-esque features unfolds. It carries the soul of an era where gold was celestial, and shamans bridged worlds, with carnelian beads perhaps whispering tales of Middle Eastern origins. Its survival in such pristine condition is nearly miraculous, a silent testament to the sacred artistry of a time when jewels were potent talismans.

Product details

Description
A gold sheet finely hammered into the shape of a bird with spread wings and tail forms the eye-catching pendant on this beaded necklace.
The head of the bird carries human features as well as bird features: the horizontal rings through the small pierced holes resemble a mouth or a tongue or a nose ring while the nose could just as well be a beak. Although the general appearance of the pendant expresses a rudimentary finish, the bird's head and body are relatively three dimensional and almost fully flanked with slightly indented lines for feathers. The area that separates the head from the body is shaped by two side parts folded to the back of the pendant. The necklace runs discretely through these side parts on the back side, which is how these two parts replace the function of a suspension hook.
The necklace itself consists of larger orangey red beads with white veins in various shapes -most probably carnelian-, of small greyish black beads of the same shape and of gold plates rolled into scroll beads, with at the end a hook and eye closure.

Dating and symbolism
Resemblance with pre-Columbian art (400 CE - 1000 CE)

This pendant fits like a glove into the pre-Columbian era, starting from the material to the iconic shape and even its finish.
-Considering the material: Gold is regarded as a sacred medium in pre-Columbian cultures. According to the pre-Columbian mythology gold descends directly from the sun as its solidified sweat fertilising the earth.
-Considering the bird figure with spread wings and human features: In pre-Columbian cultures, shamans play an important role in society and function as a mediator between nature, the cosmos and humans. He was believed to be able to fulfill this job by shapeshifting for which the bird was considered one of the most appropriate medium. Shamans are known to wear chest plates of their totem animal to help them with their duty. These totems often combine the animal features with human facial features as a perfect symbiosis between both creatures. Furthermore, multiple pre-Columbian cultures consider birds to be messengers between gods and humans and/or to deliver seeds to humans crucial for survival. Therefore, they are almost always depicted with spread wings as if the bird is in full flight.
-Considering the meager attention to finish: Pre-Columbian jewellery pieces give the impression of lacking attention to detail and finish. Nevertheless, this is an important characteristic element as the first and foremost goal of these pieces was to be of aid, to convey supernatural powers. As a utility instrument, its finish is of lesser importance. However, the suspension hook of such pendants are almost always incorporated into the design or even fully invisible to maintain the resemblance of the totem as well as possible.

Besides all these similarities with other examples from the collection of the Met museum and auction items from Sotheby's, this item does carry some unique features. This gold plate is in comparison rather three dimensional and more embellished referring to the indented abstract feather lines.
Furthermore about the necklace, we've encountered this type of pendants and this type of necklaces dating from the same period in time, but we haven't yet seen them presented together. That could mean that this combination is very rare or that the pendant and necklace don't belong together according to the wearing principles regarding these pieces in the pre-Columbian era. Besides that, we wish to keep in mind that necklaces with carnelian beads -or another opaque gemstone- together with gold plates rolled into scroll beads were also common in much earlier ages in de Middle East.
Another striking notability is that our most recent source of a sale of such an antique pendant (without necklace) dates back from an auction by Sotheby's in 2004.
Of course, we're very much open for any information from experts in this field.

-34 -most probably- carnelian rounded barrel beads with a height varying between 4,57mm (0,180 inch) and 6,65mm (0,262 inch), and a diameter between 6,54mm (0,257 inch) and 11,02mm (0,434 inch).
-38 (+14 at the back of the pendant) black to grayish beads -resembling lava stone- varying in height around 2,00mm (0,079 inch) and in diameter around 4,00mm (0,157 inch).

Please note:
-Colour stone weights are not provided, since we do not wish to remove the beads from their necklace to preserve the integrity of the artefact.
-It is a common practice to treat gemstones to intensify their clarity or colour. However, we don't expect this for these beads, considering the type of stone and the age of the piece. Therefore, the beads in question have not been tested.
-Furthermore, the value of this artefact lies in its authenticity and age, not in the value of the materials used.

Technique: Enamelling is an old and widely-adopted technology. The ancient Egyptians applied enamels to pottery and stone objects. The ancient Greeks, Celts, Russians, and Chinese also used enameling processes on metal objects. Enamel is the colorful result of fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 degrees Celsius. The powder melts and flows and hardens to a smooth, durable vitreous coating on metal, glass or ceramic. According to some sources, the word enamel comes from the High German word smelzan (to smelt) via the Old French esmail. Used as a noun, "an enamel" is a usually small decorative object, coated with enamel coating, such as a champlevé or a cloisonné (different techniques).

Extra information: Japonism, or Japonisme, the original French term, which is also used in English, is a term for the influence of the arts of Japan on those of the West. The word was first used by Jules Claretie in his book L'Art Francais en 1872 published in that year. Works arising from the direct transfer of principles of Japanese art on Western, especially by French artists, are called japonesque.

Style specifics: This type of jewelry is very specific for the fifties of the twentieth century. The Art Deco period preceded only 20 years and was still used as source of inspiration, it is (even for the trained eye) sometimes very hard to note the difference between Art Deco and Fifties.

Extra information: Diamond is the birthstone for the month of April, and besides being the most popular gemstone for engagement rings, it is also the anniversary gem for the 10th and 60th years of marriage.

Even though the diamond is the hardest of all gemstones known to man, it is the simplest in composition: it is common carbon. The ancient Greeks believed that diamonds were splinters of stars fallen to earth. It was even said by some that they were the tears of the Gods or perhaps crystallized lightning or hardened dew drops. The exact origin of diamonds remained something of a mystery for centuries.

In ancient times only kings wore diamonds as a symbol of strength, courage and invincibility. Over the centuries, the diamond acquired its unique status as the ultimate gift of love. It was said that Cupid's arrows were tipped with diamonds which have a magic that nothing else can ever quite equal.

But it wasn't until 1477, when Archduke Maximillian of Austria gave a diamond ring to Mary of Burgundy, that the tradition of diamond engagement rings began. Even the reason a woman wears it on the third finger of her left hand dates back to the early Egyptian belief that the vena amoris (vein of love) ran directly from the heart to the top of the third finger, left hand.

Diamond(s): One brilliant cut diamond with an estimated weight of ± 0.40ct. (colour and clarity: F/G, vs/si).

The Romantic Victorian Period - Experts divide the reign of Queen Victoria, also called The Victorian era (1837 - 1901) in to three periods of about twenty years each; The Romantic Victorian Period (1837 - 1860), The Grand Victorian Period (1860 - 1880), and the Late or Aesthetic Victorian Period (1880 - 1901).

We consider this to be of the Romantic Victorian Period. This period covers the coronation of Victoria as Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and her marriage to King Albert and their love, their devotion to their marriage and to their country are the sources of inspiration for this period. The jewels of this period are made of intricate carvings, special techniques where the enamel is subtly worked. These techniques allowed to give the jewel a certain opulence with less precious metal needed. As precious metals were really rare at that time. Highly favored (semi-) precious stones in this period are amethyst, coral, garnets, seed pearls and turquoises. The connotation is obviously sentimental, symbolic and romantic with reminiscent Gothic and/or Renaissance patterns and an abundant use of motifs like anchors, birds, branches, crosses, hearts and snakes.

Something between Art Deco and Belle Époque - Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style which had its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century. The style originated in the 1920s and continued to be employed until after World War II. The term "art deco" first saw wide use after an exhibition in 1966, referring to the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes that was the culmination of high-end style modern in Paris. Led by the best designers in the decorative arts such as fashion, and interior design, Art Deco affected all areas of design throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including architecture and industrial design, as well as the visual arts such as painting, the graphic arts and film. At the time, this style was seen as elegant, glamorous, functional and modern. See also: Art Deco.

Style specifics
This is something between Belle Époque and Art Deco.
The Belle Époque (French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century from the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) and lasted until World War I (1914-18).

Occurring during the time of the French Third Republic and the German Empire, the "Belle Époque" was named in retrospect, when it began to be considered a "golden age" the major powers of Europe, new technologies improved lives and the commercial arts adapted Renaissance and eighteenth-century styles to modern forms.

In the newly rich United States, emerging from the Panic of 1873, the comparable epoch was dubbed the Gilded Age. In the United Kingdom, this epoch overlaps the end of what is called the Victorian Era there and the period named the Edwardian Era.

In the Belle Époque cheap coal and cheap labour contributed to the cult of the orchid and made possible the perfection of fruits grown under glass, as the apparatus of state dinners extended to the upper classes; champagne was perfected during the Belle Époque. Exotic feathers and furs were more prominently featured in fashion than ever before, as haute couture was invented in Paris, the centre of the Belle Époque, where fashion began to move in a yearly cycle; in Paris restaurants such as Maxim's achieved a new splendour and cachet as places for the rich to parade, and the Opéra Garnier devoted enormous spaces to staircases as similar show places.

After mid-century, railways linked all the major cities of Europe to spa towns like Biarritz and Deauville; their carriages were rigorously divided into first-class and second-class, but the super-rich now began to commission private railway coaches, as exclusivity was a hallmark of opulent luxury. Bohemian lifestyles gained a different glamour, pursued in the cabarets of Montmartre.

Art Deco
Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period. Art Deco moved away from the soft pastels and organic forms of its style predecessor, Art Nouveau, and embraced influences from many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative.

Extra information
Diamond is the birthstone for the month of April, and besides being the most popular gemstone for engagement rings, it is also the anniversary gem for the 10th and 60th years of marriage.

Style
Victorian - Victorian decorative arts refers to the style of decorative arts during the Victorian era. The Victorian era is known for its eclectic revival and interpretation of historic styles and the introduction of cross-cultural influences from the middle east and Asia in furniture, fittings, and Interior decoration. Victorian design is widely viewed as having indulged in a regrettable excess of ornament. The Arts and Crafts movement, the aesthetic movement, Anglo-Japanese style, and Art Nouveau style have their beginnings in the late Victorian era.

Style specifics
The Grand Victorian Period - Experts divide the reign of Queen Victoria, also called The Victorian era (1837 - 1901) into three periods of about twenty years each; The Romantic Victorian Period (1837 - 1860), The Grand Victorian Period (1860 - 1880), and the Late or Aesthetic Victorian Period (1880 - 1901).

We consider this to be of the Grand Victorian Period.

This second Victorian period is famous for its ostentatious pieces set with pearls and diamonds (from South Africa). From ca. 1850 wealthy English had reported about jewelry from India and Japan, which heavily inspired the jewelers of this period. This period also corresponds with the death of Queen Victoria's husband King Albert making mourning jewelry (set with heavy dark stones) the type of jewelry specific for this period.

Mythology

Theme
The Farnese Bull, also known as Toro Farnese in Italian, is a monumental Roman reproduction of a Hellenistic masterpiece. This colossal marble sculptural group depicts the myth of Dirce, the first wife of King Lykos of Thebes. According to legend, Dirce was bound to a wild bull as punishment by Amphion and Zethus, the sons of Antiope, for her mistreatment of their mother.

Pliny the Elder attributes the creation of this sculpture to Rhodian artists Apollonius of Tralles and Tauriscus. It is believed to have been commissioned at the end of the 2nd century BCE and is carved from a single block of marble. This masterpiece is renowned for its intricate portrayal of a dramatic and enduring mythological moment.

Technique
Cameo is a method of carving, or an item of jewellery or vessel made in this manner. It features a raised (positive) relief image. There are three main materials for Cameo carving; Shells or Agate (called a Hardstone cameo), and glass. Cameos can be produced by setting a carved relief, such as a portrait, onto a background of a contrasting colour. This is called an assembled cameo. Alternately, a cameo can be carved directly out of a material with integral layers or banding, such as (banded) agate or layered glass, where different layers have different colours. Sometimes dyes are used to enhance these colours. Cameos are often worn as jewellery. Stone cameos of great artistry were made in Greece dating back as far as the 6th century BC. They were very popular in Ancient Rome, and one of the most famous stone cameos from this period is the Gemma Claudia made for the Emperor Claudius. The technique has since enjoyed periodic revivals, notably in the early Renaissance, and again in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

Diamonds: 94 rose cut diamonds. We do not have the weight of the diamonds which is normal in our trade when it comes to rose cuts.

Hallmarks: Pre-revolution Russian hallmarks for 14K gold. Hallmarked in Transcaucasia, known because of the letter 'O' in the hallmark. This hallmark was used between 1908 and the Russian Revolution in 1917. Furthermore we found a French control mark the eagle's head indicates that the piece has been made in France....
If this piece could only talk... What amazing story would we hear.
UPDATE: We have gained new insights regarding the origin of the brooch. The hallmark, an eagle's head, is a French stamp used for items made in France, as items made abroad and imported into France would have a different import stamp. Additionally, the location of the Russian stamp is not the typical place where jewellery manufactured in Russia would be hallmarked by the Russian assay office. All this leads us to revise our initial conclusion, and we now describe it as made in France and imported into Russia.

Diamond is the birthstone for the month of April, and besides being the most popular gemstone for engagement rings, it is also the anniversary gem for the 10th and 60th years of marriage.

Even the reason a woman wears it on the third finger of her left hand dates back to the early Egyptian belief that the vena amoris (vein of love) ran directly from the heart to the top of the third finger, left hand.

engagement ring - Especially in Western cultures, an engagement ring is a ring indicating the that the person wearing it is engaged to be married. In the United Kingdom, and North America, engagement rings are traditionally worn only by women, and rings can feature gemstones. In other cultures men and women usually wear matching rings, which can be plain. In some cultures, engagement rings are also used as wedding rings.

Conventionally, the woman's ring is presented as a betrothal gift by a man to his prospective spouse while he proposes marriage or directly after she accepts his marriage proposal. It represents a formal agreement to future marriage. Rings can be bought by the man, the couple together, or by each partner for the other.

In North America and the United Kingdom, it is worn on the left hand ring finger, while in Poland and Ukraine, it is customary for the ring to be worn on the right hand. In Germany, the ring is worn on the left hand while engaged, but moved to the right hand when married. Similar traditions purportedly date to classical times, dating back from an early usage reportedly referring to the fourth finger of the left hand as containing the vena amoris or "vein of love".

Betrothal rings were used during Roman times, but weren't generally revived in the Western world until the 13th century. The first well-documented use of a diamond ring to signify engagement was by the Archduke Maximilian of Austria in imperial court of Vienna in 1477, upon his betrothal to Mary of Burgundy.

In the 20th century, if he could afford it, the typical Western groom privately selected and purchased an engagement ring, which he then presented to his desired bride when he proposed marriage. More recently, couples frequently select an engagement ring together. (from Wikipedia)

Style specifics
Neo-Renaissance jewellery refers to pieces inspired by the art and culture of the Renaissance period, which spanned from the 14th to the 17th centuries. Created primarily in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Neo-Renaissance jewellery aimed to replicate the grandeur and intricacy of its historical predecessor. Artisans of this movement often utilised traditional materials like gold, enamels, and precious gemstones, meticulously crafting them into elaborate designs that featured a variety of motifs, such as mythological scenes, putti, and intricate floral patterns.

The Neo-Renaissance movement was largely a European phenomenon, with France being a key player in its development. Renowned jewellers like Jules Wièse elevated the craft to new heights, creating pieces that were not mere replicas but original works of art that incorporated Renaissance elements. These jewellery pieces were considered the epitome of luxury and sophistication, valued not just for their materials but also for their exquisite craftsmanship and detailed ornamentation. They are now highly sought after by collectors and can be seen as timeless heirlooms, capable of captivating future generations with their unique blend of history and artistry.

Style
Art Deco - Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style which had its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century.

Style specifics
Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period. Art Deco moved away from the soft pastels and organic forms of its style predecessor, Art Nouveau, and embraced influences from many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative.

Before the 20th century, other types of betrothal gifts were common. Before the end of the 19th century, the bride-to-be frequently received a sewing thimble rather than a engagement ring. This practice was particularly common among religious groups that shunned jewelry. Engagement rings didn't become standard in the West until the end of the 19th century, and diamond rings didn't become common until the 1930s. Now, 80% of the women are offered a diamond ring to signify engagement. (from: Wikipedia)

Extra information
This captivating jewel, featuring the bold and vibrant hues of blue, white, and red, offers intriguing possibilities of patriotic symbolism. It may honour the French tricolour, evoking national pride and the ideals of liberty, equality, and brotherhood during the interwar or post-WWII era. Alternatively, the colours could reference the American flag, symbolising patriotism or reflecting the glamour of Hollywood’s jewellery trends in the 1940s-50s. The exceptional craftsmanship suggests the work of a master jeweller, potentially French or American. While its exact origin remains a mystery, the artistry of this piece speaks profoundly to its historical and cultural significance.

French Connection
The colours blue, white, and red reference the French tricolour, a symbol of national pride and revolutionary ideals since 1789. A common interpretation suggests that the white in the flag represents the monarchy, held captive between the Parisian colours of blue and red. However, this explanation remains controversial, as it seems unlikely that the republic, which distanced itself so strongly from monarchy, would intentionally retain a reference to the Bourbons, even in a subordinate role. More likely, the flag symbolises the values of Liberté (freedom), Égalité (equality) and Fraternité (brotherhood), with blue, white, and red representing these ideals.

American Connection
The colours blue, white, and red may also symbolise the American flag, with its strong associations with liberty and independence. During the 1940s-1950s, particularly in the wake of World War II, patriotic jewellery became popular in the United States, often showcasing the nation’s core values of democracy and freedom. Additionally, the flamboyant design of this piece reflects the influence of Hollywood in the same period, where jewellery was not only decorative but also a bold statement of style and identity.

Hallmarks
The jewel bears the French swan mark for silver and the owl mark for 18 carat gold. These marks do not prove that the jewel was made in France. Rather, they indicate that precious metal parts of foreign or uncertain origin were submitted to the French assay authorities for control. In other words, the marks point to French control, not necessarily to French manufacture.

The connotation is obviously sentimental, symbolic and romantic with reminiscent Gotic and/or Renaissance patterns and an abundant use of motifs like anchors, birds, branches, crosses, hearts and snakes.

Style specifics: This is something between Belle Époque and Art Deco.

At the time, this style was seen as elegant, glamorous, functional and modern.

Product story

A charming Georgian pendant, probably French or English and dating to around 1820, centred on an oval enamel plaque in grisaille. Two cherubs appear in soft shades of grey and white against a delicate pink ground, giving the scene a quiet, poetic quality. The image has that intimate, reflective character so often admired in early 19th century decorative art, while the gold surround frames it with warmth and restraint. A small jewel, but one with atmosphere.
