Extra information: Betrothal rings were used during Roman times, but weren't generally revived in the Western world until the 13th century. The first well-documented use of a diamond ring to signify engagement was by the Archduke Maximilian of Austria in imperial court of Vienna in 1477, upon his betrothal to Mary of Burgundy.

Before the 20th century, other types of betrothal gifts were common. Before the end of the 19th century, the bride-to-be frequently received a sewing thimble rather than a engagement ring. This practice was particularly common among religious groups that shunned jewelry. Engagement rings didn't become standard in the West until the end of the 19th century, and diamond rings didn't become common until the 1930s. Now, 80% of the women are offered a diamond ring to signify engagement. (from: Wikipedia)

something between the Late-Victorian and Belle Epoque style - Victorian decorative arts refers to the style of decorative arts during the Victorian era. The Victorian era is known for its eclectic revival and interpretation of historic styles and the introduction of cross-cultural influences from the middle east and Asia in furniture, fittings, and Interior decoration.

Victorian design is widely viewed as having indulged in a regrettable excess of ornament.
And the Belle Époque style (Belle Époque is French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century and lasted until World War I. Occurring during the time of the French Third Republic and the German Empire, the "Belle Époque" was named in retrospect, when it began to be considered a "golden age" the major powers of Europe, new technologies improved lives and the commercial arts adapted Renaissance and eighteenth-century styles to modern forms. In the newly rich United States, emerging from the Panic of 1873, the comparable epoch was dubbed the Gilded Age. In the United Kingdom, this epoch overlaps the end of what is called the Victorian Era there and the period named the Edwardian Era.

Product story

Behold, an exquisite antique flower brooch, a relic from the Grand Victorian Period, circa 1860, with origins rooted in the Netherlands. This trembleuse corsage brooch boasts the radiance of 130 high-quality rose-cut diamonds, delicately set upon a silver foil and embraced by the warmth of 14K red gold. These rose-cut diamonds, renowned for their captivating lustre, rest upon a bed of foil, their brilliance akin to stars in the night sky.

Some experts extol their romantic allure, which dances enchantingly in the flickering glow of candlelight. One can't help but wonder if any other illumination could rival the ethereal radiance they display, for candles alone were their faithful companions.

Trembleuse jewellery, so named for its quivering design, bestows an aura of timeless elegance upon this Victorian masterpiece. Adorned with Dutch hallmarks from 1852 to 1906, it whispers tales of love and passion through the ages.

We consider this to be of the Grand Victorian Period.

This second Victorian period is famous for its ostentatious pieces set with pearls and diamonds (from South Africa). From ca. 1850 wealthy English had reported about jewelry from India and Japan, which heavily inspired the jewelers of this period. This period also corresponds with the death of Queen Victoria's husband King Albert making mourning jewelry (set with heavy dark stones) the type of jewelry specific for this period.

The term "art deco" first saw wide use after an exhibition in 1966, referring to the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes that was the culmination of high-end style modern in Paris. Led by the best designers in the decorative arts such as fashion, and interior design, Art Deco affected all areas of design throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including architecture and industrial design, as well as the visual arts such as painting, the graphic arts and film. At the time, this style was seen as elegant, glamorous, functional and modern. See also: Art Deco.

And the Belle Époque (French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century and lasted until World War I.

Style specifics
This is something between Belle Époque and Art Deco.
The Belle Époque (French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century from the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) and lasted until World War I (1914-18).

In the Belle Époque cheap coal and cheap labour contributed to the cult of the orchid and made possible the perfection of fruits grown under glass, as the apparatus of state dinners extended to the upper classes; champagne was perfected during the Belle Époque. Exotic feathers and furs were more prominently featured in fashion than ever before, as haute couture was invented in Paris, the centre of the Belle Époque, where fashion began to move in a yearly cycle; in Paris restaurants such as Maxim's achieved a new splendour and cachet as places for the rich to parade, and the Opéra Garnier devoted enormous spaces to staircases as similar show places.

After mid-century, railways linked all the major cities of Europe to spa towns like Biarritz and Deauville; their carriages were rigorously divided into first-class and second-class, but the super-rich now began to commission private railway coaches, as exclusivity was a hallmark of opulent luxury. Bohemian lifestyles gained a different glamour, pursued in the cabarets of Montmartre.

Art Deco
Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period. Art Deco moved away from the soft pastels and organic forms of its style predecessor, Art Nouveau, and embraced influences from many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative.

Extra information
Diamond is the birthstone for the month of April, and besides being the most popular gemstone for engagement rings, it is also the anniversary gem for the 10th and 60th years of marriage.

Even though the diamond is the hardest of all gemstones known to man, it is the simplest in composition: it is common carbon. The ancient Greeks believed that diamonds were splinters of stars fallen to earth. It was even said by some that they were the tears of the Gods or perhaps crystallized lightning or hardened dew drops. The exact origin of diamonds remained something of a mystery for centuries.

In ancient times only kings wore diamonds as a symbol of strength, courage and invincibility. Over the centuries, the diamond acquired its unique status as the ultimate gift of love. It was said that Cupid's arrows were tipped with diamonds which have a magic that nothing else can ever quite equal.

But it wasn't until 1477, when Archduke Maximillian of Austria gave a diamond ring to Mary of Burgundy, that the tradition of diamond engagement rings began. Even the reason a woman wears it on the third finger of her left hand dates back to the early Egyptian belief that the vena amoris (vein of love) ran directly from the heart to the top of the third finger, left hand.

Product story

An exquisite example of Romantic Victorian artistry, circa 1850, this brooch en tremblant is fashioned from 18k pink gold with silver accents. It encapsulates the era's sentimental value through a flower branch motif, alive with 143 rose cut diamonds and senailles, set to tremble with every movement. Drawing inspiration from nature and symbolising the love and devotion of Queen Victoria's early reign, its intricate craftsmanship reflects a period where opulence was achieved with less. This brooch is a testament to a time of profound romanticism and expressive design.

Style: Victorian - Victorian decorative arts refers to the style of decorative arts during the Victorian era. The Victorian era is known for its eclectic revival and interpretation of historic styles and the introduction of cross-cultural influences from the middle east and Asia in furniture, fittings, and Interior decoration. Victorian design is widely viewed as having indulged in a regrettable excess of ornament. The Arts and Crafts movement, the aesthetic movement, Anglo-Japanese style, and Art Nouveau style have their beginnings in the late Victorian era.
  -  See also: Victorian or more info on styles

Style specifics: The Romantic Victorian Period - Experts divide the reign of Queen Victoria, also called The Victorian era (1837 - 1901) in to three periods of about twenty years each; The Romantic Victorian Period (1837 - 1860), The Grand Victorian Period (1860 - 1880), and the Late or Aesthetic Victorian Period (1880 - 1901).

We consider this to be of the Romantic Victorian Period. This period covers the coronation of Victoria as Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and her marriage to King Albert and their love, their devotion to their marriage and to their country are the sources of inspiration for this period. The jewels of this period are made of intricate carvings, special techniques where the enamel is subtly worked. These techniques allowed to give the jewel a certain opulence with less precious metal needed. As precious metals were really rare at that time. Highly favored (semi-) precious stones in this period are amethyst, coral, garnets, seed pearls and turquoises. The connotation is obviously sentimental, symbolic and romantic with reminiscent Gotic and/or Renaissance patterns and an abundant use of motifs like anchors, birds, branches, crosses, hearts and snakes.

Technique: Tremblant or Trembleuse - Tremblant is French for "trembling". Referring to a jewel decorated with a flower or other motif that has at the top stiff projecting wires (embellished with gemstones) that tremble when the piece is subjected to any movement. Sometimes the projections are finely coiled silver springs, such as were used in the 18th century, but some examples were made with tubular stems enclosing a strip of steel spring.

Diamond(s): 143 rose cut diamonds and senailles . A senaille is a simplified rose cut diamond, a small diamond chip with perhaps a few polished facets. We do not have the weight of the rose cuts diamonds nor the senailles which is normal in our trade when it comes to rose cut diamonds and senailles.

Product story

In the realm of ancient treasures, the discovery and presentation of this pre-Columbian artifact, dated around 400 CE, is infused with a profound sense of exhilaration. With meticulous research through libraries, museum collections, and auctions, the narrative of this gold bird pendant with human-esque features unfolds. It carries the soul of an era where gold was celestial, and shamans bridged worlds, with carnelian beads perhaps whispering tales of Middle Eastern origins. Its survival in such pristine condition is nearly miraculous, a silent testament to the sacred artistry of a time when jewels were potent talismans.

Product details

Description
A gold sheet finely hammered into the shape of a bird with spread wings and tail forms the eye-catching pendant on this beaded necklace.
The head of the bird carries human features as well as bird features: the horizontal rings through the small pierced holes resemble a mouth or a tongue or a nose ring while the nose could just as well be a beak. Although the general appearance of the pendant expresses a rudimentary finish, the bird's head and body are relatively three dimensional and almost fully flanked with slightly indented lines for feathers. The area that separates the head from the body is shaped by two side parts folded to the back of the pendant. The necklace runs discretely through these side parts on the back side, which is how these two parts replace the function of a suspension hook.
The necklace itself consists of larger orangey red beads with white veins in various shapes -most probably carnelian-, of small greyish black beads of the same shape and of gold plates rolled into scroll beads, with at the end a hook and eye closure.

Dating and symbolism
Resemblance with pre-Columbian art (400 CE - 1000 CE)

This pendant fits like a glove into the pre-Columbian era, starting from the material to the iconic shape and even its finish.
-Considering the material: Gold is regarded as a sacred medium in pre-Columbian cultures. According to the pre-Columbian mythology gold descends directly from the sun as its solidified sweat fertilising the earth.
-Considering the bird figure with spread wings and human features: In pre-Columbian cultures, shamans play an important role in society and function as a mediator between nature, the cosmos and humans. He was believed to be able to fulfill this job by shapeshifting for which the bird was considered one of the most appropriate medium. Shamans are known to wear chest plates of their totem animal to help them with their duty. These totems often combine the animal features with human facial features as a perfect symbiosis between both creatures. Furthermore, multiple pre-Columbian cultures consider birds to be messengers between gods and humans and/or to deliver seeds to humans crucial for survival. Therefore, they are almost always depicted with spread wings as if the bird is in full flight.
-Considering the meager attention to finish: Pre-Columbian jewellery pieces give the impression of lacking attention to detail and finish. Nevertheless, this is an important characteristic element as the first and foremost goal of these pieces was to be of aid, to convey supernatural powers. As a utility instrument, its finish is of lesser importance. However, the suspension hook of such pendants are almost always incorporated into the design or even fully invisible to maintain the resemblance of the totem as well as possible.

Besides all these similarities with other examples from the collection of the Met museum and auction items from Sotheby's, this item does carry some unique features. This gold plate is in comparison rather three dimensional and more embellished referring to the indented abstract feather lines.
Furthermore about the necklace, we've encountered this type of pendants and this type of necklaces dating from the same period in time, but we haven't yet seen them presented together. That could mean that this combination is very rare or that the pendant and necklace don't belong together according to the wearing principles regarding these pieces in the pre-Columbian era. Besides that, we wish to keep in mind that necklaces with carnelian beads -or another opaque gemstone- together with gold plates rolled into scroll beads were also common in much earlier ages in de Middle East.
Another striking notability is that our most recent source of a sale of such an antique pendant (without necklace) dates back from an auction by Sotheby's in 2004.
Of course, we're very much open for any information from experts in this field.

-34 -most probably- carnelian rounded barrel beads with a height varying between 4,57mm (0,180 inch) and 6,65mm (0,262 inch), and a diameter between 6,54mm (0,257 inch) and 11,02mm (0,434 inch).

Please note:
-Colour stone weights are not provided, since we do not wish to remove the beads from their necklace to preserve the integrity of the artefact.
-It is a common practice to treat gemstones to intensify their clarity or colour. However, we don't expect this for these beads, considering the type of stone and the age of the piece. Therefore, the beads in question have not been tested.
-Furthermore, the value of this artefact lies in its authenticity and age, not in the value of the materials used.

Country of origin: Although it does not carry any legible control marks we believe this to be of Belgian origin.

Technique: Enamelling is an old and widely-adopted technology. The ancient Egyptians applied enamels to pottery and stone objects. The ancient Greeks, Celts, Russians, and Chinese also used enameling processes on metal objects. Enamel is the colorful result of fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 degrees Celsius. The powder melts and flows and hardens to a smooth, durable vitreous coating on metal, glass or ceramic. According to some sources, the word enamel comes from the High German word smelzan (to smelt) via the Old French esmail. Used as a noun, "an enamel" is a usually small decorative object, coated with enamel coating, such as a champlevé or a cloisonné (different techniques). and The rose cuts are set on foil. This is a special technique that was used to bring the lustre of the diamonds to its best quality.

Extra information: Brooch and pendant - Thanks to a discreetly placed ring system in the back, this jewel can also be worn either as a brooch or as a pendant. Both bail and pin can be unscrewed for optimal wear.

It is most often defined as "the dominant style of art in Europe between the Mannerist and Rococo eras, a style characterized by dynamic movement, overt emotion and self-confident rhetoric".

Style specifics
Baroque is a style in art and decoration that developed shortly before 1600 and remained current in Europe until the emergence of the Rococo style c.1730. It was started in Italy, and spread to Germany, Austria, the Low Countries, and Spain and Portugal, with only a somewhat severely classical version being popular in France under Louis XIV. The style was a development of the Renaissance style and is characterized by lively, curved, and exuberant forms, by vigorous movement, and by rich ornament, based on classical sources, being symmetrical as distinguished from the asymmetry of the following Rococo style.

Their bodies made from silver and covered with burgundy colour suede. At the back the artist has used 18K gold to finish the piece. Also set in yellow gold are the 43 brilliant cut diamonds with a total weight of a bit less than 7.00 crt, that are spread over the snails.

Extra information: Diamond is the birthstone for the month of April, and besides being the most popular gemstone for engagement rings, it is also the anniversary gem for the 10th and 60th years of marriage.

Diamond(s): Five baguette (long rectangular) cut diamonds with an estimated weight of ± 1.00ct.
Ten brilliant cut diamonds with an estimated weight of ± 0.42ct.

As the lady's profile has roses in her hair and as the frame holds two half seed pearls, no detail has been spared to enrich this classical jewel.

Style specifics: The Grand Victorian Period - Experts divide the reign of Queen Victoria, also called The Victorian era (1837 - 1901) into three periods of about twenty years each; The Romantic Victorian Period (1837 - 1860), The Grand Victorian Period (1860 - 1880), and the Late or Aesthetic Victorian Period (1880 - 1901).

Technique (01): Cameo is a method of carving, or an item of jewellery or vessel made in this manner. It features a raised (positive) relief image. There are three main materials for Cameo carving; Shells or Agate (called a Hardstone cameo), and glass. Cameos can be produced by setting a carved relief, such as a portrait, onto a background of a contrasting colour. This is called an assembled cameo. Alternately, a cameo can be carved directly out of a material with integral layers or banding, such as (banded) agate or layered glass, where different layers have different colours. Sometimes dyes are used to enhance these colours. Cameos are often worn as jewellery. Stone cameos of great artistry were made in Greece dating back as far as the 6th century BC. They were very popular in Ancient Rome, and one of the most famous stone cameos from this period is the Gemma Claudia made for the Emperor Claudius. The technique has since enjoyed periodic revivals, notably in the early Renaissance, and again in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

Technique (02): Enamelling is an old and widely-adopted technology.

Style specifics
Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period. Art Deco moved away from the soft pastels and organic forms of its style predecessor, Art Nouveau, and embraced influences from many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative.

Product story

With its rose cut diamonds set on foil, this Georgian diamond ring from circa 1830 has the darkened, intimate glow so characteristic of early 19th century jewellery. The warm yellow gold shank meets a silver detailed head of seven natural diamonds, arranged with quiet symmetry and old-world charm. Most likely Belgian, it remains a tender survival from the Georgian period.

Product details

An exquisite Georgian gold cross pendant, eloquently encapsulating the opulence of the era. Crafted circa 1720, this piece showcases seven old mine brilliant-cut diamonds and four senailles, a testament to its luxurious heritage. The cross's design, influenced by the Rococo style, reflects a blend of asymmetrical ornamentation with an array of rockwork, shells, and florals, resonating with the lavish aesthetics of the time. The old cut brilliant diamonds, a rarity in such early pieces, hint at its distinguished provenance, making it a remarkable relic of Christian symbolism and Georgian elegance.

Style specifics: Rococo is a style of decoration that followed, c.1730, the baroque style in France (where it was also called rocaille), the principal features of which are asymmetry of ornament and a repertoire consisting to a considerable extent of rockwork, shells, flowers, foliage, and scrollwork. It was developed in France under Louis XV, 1715-74, and spread to Italy, Germany, and Austria and to a lesser extent to England.

Period: ca. 1720

Source of inspiration: Christianity

Theme: Cross - The cross is one of the most ancient human symbols, and is used by many religions, such as Christianity. It is frequently a representation of the division of the world into four elements (or cardinal points), or alternately as the union of the concepts of divinity, the vertical line, and the world, the horizontal line. Technique: The rose cuts are set on foil. This is a special technique that was used to bring the lustre of the diamonds to its best quality.

Extra information: Normally crosses from this era are set with so called table rose cut diamonds which are rose cut diamonds with a flat table that is parallel to the bottom of the stone. But the big stones in this cross are fully old cut brilliant cut diamonds which is very unusual. Something we hardly run into. This cross was at its birth already a very expensive jewel.

Diamond(s): Seven old brilliant cut diamonds and four senailles . A senaille is a simplified rose cut diamond, a small diamond chip with perhaps a few polished facets. We do not have the weight of these diamonds which is normal in our trade when it comes to senailles.

The design, influenced by Japonism, showcases an abstract, tropical fruit motif in 18K yellow gold. Product story

Circa 1900, a Belle Epoque diamond ring in 18 carat white gold, centred on one old European cut diamond between two old brilliant cut diamonds, each in a smooth bezel. The open scroll shoulders, set with rose cut diamonds and fine millegrain, give that unmistakable Belle Epoque airiness: elegant, restrained, and quietly romantic. It catches the light with a softer shimmer rather than a shout, and feels like a jewel made to be worn and kept. Total weight of the three principal diamonds approximately 1.80 carats.

something between the Late-Victorian and Belle Epoque style - Victorian decorative arts refers to the style of decorative arts during the Victorian era. The Victorian era is known for its eclectic revival and interpretation of historic styles and the introduction of cross-cultural influences from the middle east and Asia in furniture, fittings, and Interior decoration.

The Belle Époque (French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century from the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) and lasted until World War I (1914-18).

Product story
We could have never imagined how much history and exact data is concealed in this late 18th Century bracelet with chromium chalcedony intaglios dating back from between 100 BC until 100 AD set in 14K bi-colour gold alternating with silver-encrusted old mine brilliant cut diamonds.

One interesting fact we already want to point out to you is that one intaglio is the same type as the one of Julius Caesar's own signet ring, inherited and worn by Augustus.

We invite you on this journey back in time, but be warned: you have to appeal on your stamina.

Product details

Antique jewelry object group: bracelet

Condition: excellent condition, especially given its age (one of the intaglio's has a chip at the back, not visible from above)
  -  (more info on our condition scale)

Country of origin: The origin of the bracelet itself is unknown.

The chromium chalcedony, in which the intaglios have been carved, originates from a single source near Eskisehir/Anatolia (Turkey). Furthermore, the carving of the chromian chalcedonies has been done in Italy. For more information, we invite you to the elucidation below, provided by Hadrien Rambach, expert i.a. cameos.

Style: Neo Classical (somewhere between Louis XVI and Empire)

This (second) neoclassic wave, more severe, more studied and more consciously archaeological, is associated with the height of the Napoleonic Empire. In France, the first phase of neoclassicism was expressed in the "Louis XVI style", and the second in the styles called "Directoire" or Empire.

The Empire style, sometimes considered the second phase of Neoclassicism, is an early-19th-century design movement in architecture, furniture, other decorative arts, and the visual arts followed in Europe and America up to around 1830. The style originated in and takes its name from the period when Napoleon I ruled France, known as the First French Empire, where it was intended to idealize Napoleon's leadership and the French state. The style corresponds to the Biedermeier style in the German-speaking lands, Federal style in the United States and to the Regency style in Britain. An earlier phase of the style was called the Adam style in Great Britain and "Louis Seize" or Louis XVI, in France.
  -  See also: Empire or more info on styles

Style specifics: A typical element for jewellery from the Louis XVI period are the X-shaped links in between the intaglios and the old mine brilliant cut of the diamonds. Typical as well for the Empire style is the use of intaglios, which refers to the revival of Classicism during that era.

Period: The bracelet itself has been crafted around 1790.

However, the chromium chalcedony intaglios can be dated between ca. 100 BC and 100 AD. For more information, we invite you to the elucidation below, provided by Hadrien Rambach, expert i.a. cameos.

Technique: Intaglio - An intaglio or engraved gem is a gem that has been carved, in the Western tradition normally with images or inscriptions only on one face. The engraving of gemstones was a major luxury art form in the ancient world, and an important one in some later periods. Strictly speaking, the term intaglio refers to cameos, carved gemstones, with the design cut into the flat background of the stone as opposed to relief carvings with the design projecting out of the background, as in nearly all cameos.

Diamond(s): 71 old brilliant cut diamonds with an estimated weight of ± 2.50ct. (colour and clarity: F/K, vs/i). The type of diamond cut here (old mine cut) is considered to be very rare for 18th Century jewellery. Most of the jewellery from 18th Century and older are rose cut diamonds.

- All diamond weights, color grades and clarity are approximate since stones are not removed from their mounts to preserve the integrity of the setting. Also we have all diamonds screened by the IJGC - lab (www.ijgc-worldwide.com ) for whether they are natural or synthetic, and all diamonds in this jewel are 100% guaranteed to be natural!

Precious stones: Eight chromium chalcedonies and the description of each of these Roman intaglios (directions left/right) is given according to the impressions that these seals would make in wax.

Nº 01 depicts: the bare head of a male to right, in a Late Republican fashion
Nº 02 depicts: Asklepios standing to left, draped, with his snake around his caduceus
Nº 03 depicts: a standing soldier to left, helmeted, holding spear and shield: Mars?
Nº 04 depicts: a Victory walking to right, holding a wreath and a palm
Nº 05 depicts: a standing female deity facing, resting on a short column, holding drapery and a palm with one arm, a spear and shield (?) with the other
Nº 06 depicts: a standing female deity to left, elegantly dressed, holding something in her her, with letters behind her.
Nº 07 depicts: Bacchus dancing (?), nude, holding a vase from which he verses wine towards the ground where a panther rests
Nº 08 depicts: Venus Victrix standing to right, resting on a short column, holding the spear and helmet. This type was the one of Julius Caesar's own signet ring, inherited and worn by Augustus. It can be found on several coins of the 1stand 2ndcentury AD. For other examples, in various stones, see Erika Zwierlein-Diehl (Die antiken Gemmen des kunsthistorischen Museums in Wien, vol. II, 1979, no. 1460-1476).
Venus Victrix (Venus the Victorious) was an aspect of the armed Aphrodite that Greeks had inherited from the East (the goddess Ishtar was a goddess of war). Venus Victrix was considered able to bring victory to warriors such as Caesar, and Pompey dedicated a temple to her - at the top of his theater in the Campus Martius in 55 BC. She also had a shrine on the Capitoline Hill. /// Les armes d'Énée, fabriquées par Vulcain (Virgil, Eneid, 8, 416-453) et que Vénus était venue remettre à son fils (8, 608-625).

Full description, provided by Hadrien Rambach:

Part one: On the origin of chromium chalcedony intaglios

This bracelet is set with intaglios cut into chromium chalcedony, a scarce material which has been proven by Cigdem Lule to originate from a single source near Eskisehir / Anatolia.

"A fashionable lady wears cameos at her girdle, cameos in her necklace, cameos on each of her bracelets, a cameo on her tiara. Antique stones are more fashionable than ever, but in default of them one may employ engraved stones" ( Journal des Dames, 25 Ventôse XIII (1806), quoted in O'Day1974, p. 15, and in Gere-Rudoe2010, pp. 467-468).

Typical 1st century AD gems, depicting a variety of gods and goddesses: Asklepios, Victory, Mars (?), Venus, Fortuna (?), etc, as well as an attractive male portrait in Late Republican style.

It is only recently that scientific attention has been paid to the materials used in ancient engraved gems, and over the past few years several articles have been devoted to those "green translucent stones": chromium chalcedonies (Maaskant1975, p. 168; Sax1996, pp. 63-72; Lüle2006; Platz2010; Lüle2011). As a general rule, "one cannot identify the vein from which the stones came-out. Ancient texts only, and the alchemist tradition of the Middle-Age, bring us some indication on their origins", (Guiraud1996, p. 30).

A study of the jewellery in which and with which chromian calcedonies have been found allowed Gertrud Platz to conclude that they "were distributed throughout the Roman Empire" but also that "one might assume that they were manufactured mainly in central Italy" (1).

The archaeological contexts in which they have been found indicate that the large majority of ancient engraved chromian calcedonies can be dated between the Julio-Claudian period (c.30 BC onwards) and the reign of Trajan (up to c.110 AD) (2).

Another - very small - group of chromian calcedonies were carved during the Antonines (c. AD 140-150), and a last one under the Severan dynasty (c. AD 195-230) (3).

But all the gems employed by Melillo belong to the first group, the later two being principally Imperial portraits. We can note here that two cameos only are known in chromian calcedony (4), that they both belong to the early range of the first period, and that they are both imperial portraits which confirms the preciousness of the material: a portrait of Livia formerly in the collection of Orsini (5), and a portrait of Claudius found in Pompeii in 1878 (6).

(1) Platz2010, p. 196.
(2) This starting-point is an approximate date that coincides with the extinction of the Hellenistic rule in Egypt (Cleopatra VII killed herself in 30 BC), and the beginning of the Roman Empire (Octavian becoming Augustus in 27 BC): two simultaneous events that lead to a geographical displacement of many artists (including gem-engravers). Some gems were later remounted in more fashionable rings. For a chromian calcedony re-engraved in the early fourth-century AD, see Berlin 1969 no. 516 = Platz 2010 p. 190.
(3) Platz2010, pp. 187 and 192-195, who discusses whether there may be some 3rd-4th-century AD Christian chromian calcedonies.
(4) The gems Orsini1884 no. 64 = Naples1994 no. 73 andOrsini1884 no. 309 = Naples1994 no. 138 are miniature sculptures rather than cameos.

Part two: On the occurence of green gems in ancient times

Green gems were much in favour in ancient times, which explains their predominance in some hoards (such as Eauze in Gaul) and some excavations (such as the area of the Vesuvius). Theophrastos and Pliny used the name smaragdus for twelve different stones (1): ancient writers in general did not distinguish the different varieties of green chalcedonies and beryls. Therefore, we still cannot be certain of the actual nature of the material in which the portraits of Alexander the Great (2) and Ptolemy Soter II (3) were engraved. Until now, the vocabulary of archaeologists and art-historians remains imprecise or mistaken: chromian chalcedonies are commonly called 'prases', from the Latin prasius (leek coloured), though they are usually deep and dark, or even 'plasmas' which is very erroneous as that is in fact green jasper (opaque).

It is attested that, at the time of Pliny who was writing in AD 77-79, the 'emeralds' (smaragdus) were the third most sought-after jewels, after diamonds and pearls. "Indeed there is no stone, the color of which is more delightful to the eye; for whereas the sight fixes itself with avidity upon the green grass and the foliage of the trees, we have all the more pleasure in looking upon the smaragdus, there being no green in existence of a more intense colour than this. And then, besides, of all the precious stones, this is the only one that feeds the sight without satiating it. […] Neither sunshine, shade, nor artificial light effects any change in their appearance; they have always a softened and graduated brilliancy" (4).

For the Roman men and women, it was the colour of their gems that mattered, rather than their rarity: the stronger the colour, the better; and deep green gems were therefore of particular value (5).

One of the most serious academic researcher, H. Guiraud, specialised only in archeological finds, did not hesitate to write that " les intailles et les camées sont des objets d'art, si un grand artiste les a faits, si la matière est belle" (6) - i.e. "intaglios and cameos are works of art, if they were made by a great artist, if the material is attractive".

(2) Pliny, Nat. Hist., 37, 8.
(3) Plutarch, Life of Lucullus, 3.1.
(4) Pliny, Nat.Hist , XXXVII.16. Pliny also comments: "Even when the vision has been fatigued with intently viewing other objects, it is refreshed by being turned upon this stone; and lapidaries know of nothing that is more gratefully soothing to the eyes, its soft green tints being wonderfully adapted for assuaging lassitude, when felt in those organs"; see Krug1987and Woods2006 about whether Nero could have actually used an emerald to look through.
(5) Interestingly, the many glass-gems that survive often copy hardstones (brown sards, orange carnelians, black and blue nicolos, multi-coloured banded agates), but we only know few pastes trying to look-alike chromian calcedony (e.g. Fossing1929, no. 709, Vitellozzi 2010no. 216). Pliny's warning, that crystal can be coloured like emeralds, refers to rock-crystal rather than to glass (Nat. Hist. , XXXVII, 79 & 197). On an actual example of ancient hardstone-colouring (of nicolos), see Revel1992, p. 354.
