A classy 18th Century ring with an image that, once you understand what you're looking at, makes you giggle. The image is known as "The triumph of Priapus" and we even found some 18th century drawings with this scene belonging to The British Museum (see pictures). As far as we have been able to determine, only a few of these rings with this scenery are known to exist. We were lucky enough to find a very interesting thesis from Raimon Graells i Fabregat (2011) in where he dives fully into the history of this ring (more about this further in this text).

To several experts in the field of antique intaglio's, only three or four of these rings are known to excist!

Priapus - In Greek mythology, Priapus was a minor rustic fertility god, protector of livestock, fruit plants, gardens and male genitalia. Priapus is marked by his oversized, permanent erection, which gave rise to the medical term priapism. He became a popular figure in Roman erotic art and Latin literature, and is the subject of the often humorously obscene collection of verse called the Priapeia. (from: Wikipedia)

Country of origin: Although it does not carry any legible control marks we believe this to be of French origin.

Style: Classicism, the following of ancient Greek or Roman principles and style in art and literature, generally associated with harmony, restraint, and adherence to recognized standards of form and craftsmanship, especially from the Renaissance to the 18th century. or more info on styles

Style specifics: Classicism - Italian Renaissance painting and sculpture are marked by their renewal of classical forms, motifs and subjects. In the 15th century Leon Battista Alberti was important in theorizing many of the ideas for painting that came to a fully realised product with Raphael's School of Athens during the High Renaissance. The themes continued largely unbroken into the 17th century, when artists such as Nicolas Poussin and Charles Le Brun represented of the more rigid classicism. Like Italian classicizing ideas in the 15th and 16th centuries, it spread through Europe in the mid to late 17th century. Later classicism in painting and sculpture from the mid-18th and 19th centuries is generally referred to as Neoclassicism. (from: Wikipedia)

Technique: Intaglio - An intaglio or engraved gem is a small gemstone, usually semi-precious, that has been carved, in the Western tradition normally with images or inscriptions only on one face. The engraving of gemstones was a major luxury art form in the ancient world, and an important one in some later periods. Strictly speaking, engraving means carving in intaglio, with the design cut into the flat background of the stone, but relief carvings, with the design projecting out of the background as in nearly all cameos, are also covered by the term. The activity is also called gem carving, and the artists gem-cutters. References to antique gems, and intaglios in a jewellery context, will almost always mean carved gems. (from: Wikipedia)

Extra information:
The following is from "Symbolae Antiqvariae" by Raimon Graells i Fabregat, published 2011 by Fabrizio Serra Editore, Pisa & Rome.

The first known publishing about this stone (or its sibling) is from 1784 by a publicist d'Hancarville who described this "procession of Priapus" as an ancient stone. But there is plenty of doubt about the originality of this stone. There is also a carnelian in the collection of a goldsmith Bassols in Catalonia with the same theme and made at the end of the XIX century.

It is suspected that this festive procession of bacchants and satyrs plus a cow and roosters as a symbol of the masculine power accompanied by Priapus phallus on a party wagon towards a decorated gate, the vagina, is a XVIIIth century product, a by now antique, antique counterfeit. D’Hancarville gave this procession the title: "Le triomphe de Priape ??porté sur un char" (French for: "The triumph of Priapus carried on a chariot").

The Getty Research Institute devoted attention to it in an exhibition catalog in 2008. See: The Antic and the Antiques in XVIIIth Century England (Redford, 2008). No relevant images can be found in it, but it contains a set of references to d’Hancarville.

The "Monuments de la vie privée des XII Césars" (French for: "Monuments of the private life of the Ceasar XII" was first published in Capri by Sabellus in 1780 (but in reality in Nancy), a second edition entitled "Monuments du culte secret des XII Césars" (French for "Monuments of the secret cult of Caesar XII") was published in 1784, also in Nancy. Then a 3rd edition was published in the Vatican in 1786. The Vatican then provided several editions. Always with fewer images than in the original, but with a more artistic finish. The choice of a false place of publication was made in order to quickly raise the profile of the author and his work as anticlerical, thereby speeding up sales.

In La France Littéraire ou dictionnaire biographique des savants" (French for:"The French Literary or biographical dictionary of the scientists") it is said of Hancarville: "He wanted to make pass these ghosts of a libidinous imagination for ancient monuments". But it remains his fantasy."

Product story

Circa 1920, a pair of transitional late Belle Époque to early Art Deco drop earrings in platinum and 18ct yellow gold, each centred with an oval sapphire, together weighing approximately 12.40 carats, within a fine border of 58 diamonds and suspended from a diamond set terminal. The openwork backs and delicate millegraining keep the look light on the ear, yet the crisp oval frames hint at the decade to come.

Style
Transitional, late Belle Époque moving towards early Art Deco, roughly the 1910s to early 1920s. See also: Art Deco.

Belle Époque (French for “Beautiful Era”) is a retrospective label for European taste from the late nineteenth century up to 1914, often associated in jewellery with lightness, elegance, and a preference for refined sparkle that later gives way to early Art Deco geometry.
Overview of style periods: style periods

Style specifics
This piece sits between late Belle Époque and early Art Deco, combining Belle Époque lightness with the first clearer, more structured lines.

Belle Époque
In jewellery, Belle Époque design is typically airy and refined, often using platinum or platinum topped gold, with diamonds set in openwork and finished with very fine detailing, for example millegrain, garland and ribbon motifs, bows, and lace like effects.

Early Art Deco
Early Art Deco begins to favour stronger geometry and symmetry, sharper outlines, and clearer contrast, while keeping precious materials and meticulous workmanship. Typical cues include stepped forms, a more architectural layout, and precisely placed accent stones.

Product story

A refined expression of Art Deco elegance but also styled simplicity, this French platinum bracelet from the 1920s weaves a seamless rhythm of diamonds and sapphires into a design of timeless sophistication. Twelve luminous sapphires, displaying a particularly vivid and velvety cornflower blue hue, are exceptionally rare in their untreated state. Their natural brilliance is heightened by the sparkle of 24 old mine-cut diamonds, totalling approximately 3.92 carats, lending a striking contrast. The fluid articulation of this piece, combined with its geometric grace, captures the era’s spirit of modernity and luxury. A masterpiece of refined craftsmanship, marked with the French dog’s head for platinum.

Style
Art Deco - Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style which had its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century. The style originated in the 1920s and continued to be employed until after World War II. The term "art deco" first saw wide use after an exhibition in 1966, referring to the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes that was the culmination of high-end style modern in Paris. Led by the best designers in the decorative arts such as fashion, and interior design, Art Deco affected all areas of design throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including architecture and industrial design, as well as the visual arts such as painting, the graphic arts and film. At the time, this style was seen as elegant, glamorous, functional and modern.

Style specifics
Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period. Art Deco moved away from the soft pastels and organic forms of its style predecessor, Art Nouveau, and embraced influences from many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative.

This Rococo era pendant, a reverent cross from around 1750, is steeped in the ornate opulence of its time. Silver-topped and 18K red gold-backed, it is adorned with ten table-cut rose diamonds, their brilliance accentuated by the traditional foil setting technique. While showing signs of its venerable age with traces of past repairs, the pendant remains a dignified tribute to its Christian inspiration, its faded hallmarks hinting at a storied past.

Style
Rococo - Rococo (less commonly roccoco) also referred to as "Late Baroque" is an 18th century style which developed as Baroque artists gave up their symmetry and became increasingly more ornate, florid, and playful. Rococo rooms were designed as total works of art with elegant and ornate furniture, small sculptures, ornamental mirrors, and tapestry complementing architecture, reliefs, and wall paintings. It was largely supplanted by the Neoclassic style. In 1835 the Dictionary of the French Academy stated that the word Rococo "usually covers the kind of ornament, style and design associated with Louis XV's reign and the beginning of that of Louis XVI". It includes therefore, all types of art produced around the middle of the 18th century in France.

Style specifics
Rococo is a style of decoration that followed, c.1730, the baroque style in France (where it was also called rocaille), the principal features of which are asymmetry of ornament and a repertoire consisting to a considerable extent of rockwork, shells, flowers, foliage, and scrollwork. It was developed in France under Louis XV, 1715-74, and spread to Italy, Germany, and Austria and to a lesser extent to England.

Product story

Victorian peacock jewel, circa 1860 to 1870, with a detachable mounting so it can be worn either as a brooch or as a hair comb. Caught mid display, the tail reads as a fan of rose cut diamonds and senaille chips, pricked with red and green accents, with faint traces of blue enamel still visible, and finished with a lustrous pearl drop. A charming piece of period theatre, with the slightly puzzling history of later fittings and alterations at the back. Attributed to Gustave Baugrand, unconfirmed.

Product details

Jewellery Type

Condition
good condition, with visible traces of past repairs and alterations, including at the rear where the tail elements meet the central section, and at various points to the reverse behind the green stone settings.

Country of origin
France, probably (attribution discussed below), with later alterations and re assaying noted.

Style
Victorian. The term Victorian is used for the decorative arts and jewellery produced during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837 to 1901). In jewellery it covers a wide range of expressions, from revival styles to naturalistic and exotic influences, with changing tastes across the century.

Style specifics
The Grand Victorian Period. The reign of Queen Victoria (1837 to 1901) is often divided into three broad phases: the Romantic period (1837 to 1860), the Grand period (1860 to 1880), and the Late or Aesthetic period (1880 to 1901).

We consider this jewel to belong to the Grand Victorian period.

In these decades, jewellery could be richly ornamental and technically ambitious, with a strong taste for naturalistic motifs and for surface effects created through a combination of diamonds, coloured stones, enamel, and contrasting metals.

Period

Source of inspiration
Mother Nature (naturalistic bird motif)

Theme
Peacock - A naturalistic peacock depicted in full, with particular emphasis on the tail display and feather "eye" patterning rendered through diamonds and coloured accents.

Material 18K, 14K yellow and red gold, and silver (touchstone tested). Silver is used to the front where the diamonds are set, with gold to the reverse, as was common for diamond set jewellery of this period. The presence of both 14K and 18K gold in the same jewel is less typical and is discussed further below.
more info on precious metals

Technique
silver topped setting for the diamond decoration (rose cuts and senailles), with coloured stone accents and a pearl. Traces of blue enamel remain visible on the body.

Extra information
As presented today, the peacock element can be fitted either with a brooch pin or with a detachable comb, allowing it to be worn as a brooch or as a hair ornament. The reverse shows clear traces of past repairs and alterations. The screw receiver (the "nut") fixed to the reverse of the peacock is very likely original, whereas the screw fittings (the "bolts") on the brooch pin and on the comb are clearly later, and they do not appear to match each other. The pin assembly carries a Dutch re assay mark (585 and Z1).

Diamonds
180 rose cut diamonds and senailles . A senaille is a simplified rose cut diamond, a small diamond chip with a few polished facets. No individual or total diamond weight is available, which is normal in our trade for rose cuts and senailles, as the stones are not removed from their settings.

All diamonds, regardless of their size or shape, in our vintage and antique jewellery are verified as 100% natural by the IJGC laboratory.

Precious stones
red stones, a mix of red gemstones (unconfirmed) and red strass (also called paste)

Fifteen green stones, a mix of emeralds (unconfirmed) and green strass, set as accents

One (most probably natural) pearl

All colour stone weights are approximate since stones are not removed from their mounts to preserve the integrity of the setting.
It is a very common practice to treat gemstones to intensify their clarity or colour. The item in question has not been tested in this regard.

Birthstones
Diamond is the birthstone (or month stone) for April , and pearl for June . If the green stones include emeralds as suspected, emerald is the birthstone for May . If the red stones include rubies as suspected, ruby is the birthstone for July.

Attribution notes
The attribution to Gustave Baugrand is based on published comparanda and literature references, and on construction details. In the absence of a signature or a maker’s mark (the identifying mark registered to an individual maker or workshop), it cannot be stated with certainty. The mixed metal construction and the presence of both 14K and 18K gold, together with evidence of later repairs, refitting, and Dutch reassay marks on a later brooch fitting, are part of this assessment.

Hallmarks
Dutch reassay marks on the later brooch fitting: 585 and Z1. These marks relate to the later pin assembly, not to the original peacock element. Other components are unmarked; metals are touchstone tested.

Style
Victorian - Victorian decorative arts refers to the style of decorative arts during the Victorian era. The Victorian era is known for its eclectic revival and interpretation of historic styles and the introduction of cross-cultural influences from the middle east and Asia in furniture, fittings, and Interior decoration. Victorian design is widely viewed as having indulged in a regrettable excess of ornament. The Arts and Crafts movement, the aesthetic movement, Anglo-Japanese style, and Art Nouveau style have their beginnings in the late Victorian era.

Style specifics
The Romantic Victorian Period - Experts divide the reign of Queen Victoria, also called The Victorian era (1837 - 1901) in to three periods of about twenty years each; The Romantic Victorian Period (1837 - 1860), The Grand Victorian Period (1860 - 1880), and the Late or Aesthetic Victorian Period (1880 - 1901).

We consider this to be of the Romantic Victorian Period. This period covers the coronation of Victoria as Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and her marriage to King Albert and their love, their devotion to their marriage and to their country are the sources of inspiration for this period. The jewels of this period are made of intricate carvings, special techniques where the enamel is subtly worked. These techniques allowed to give the jewel a certain opulence with less precious metal needed. As precious metals were really rare at that time. Highly favored (semi-) precious stones in this period are amethyst, coral, garnets, seed pearls and turquoises. The connotation is obviously sentimental, symbolic and romantic with reminiscent Gotic and/or Renaissance patterns and an abundant use of motifs like anchors, birds, branches, crosses, hearts and snakes.

Style
Georgian - Georgian style is the name given in most English-speaking countries to the set of styles current between 1720 and 1840. It is eponymous for the first four British monarchs of the House of Hanover—George I of Great Britain, George II of Great Britain, George III of the United Kingdom, and George IV of the United Kingdom—who reigned in continuous succession from August 1714 to June 1830.

Technique
Granulation is a technique where the goldsmith uses very small balls (granules) of metal, which are not soldered to the piece but welded. This technique demand very high skills and precision from the maker. And filigree (formerly written filigrann or filigrane) which is a delicate kind of jewel work made with twisted threads usually of gold and silver or stitching of the same curving motifs. It often suggests lace and French from 1660 to the late 19th century. It should not be confused with ajoure jewellery work; while both have many open areas, filigree involves threads being soldered together to form an object and ajoure involves holes being punched, drilled, or cut through an existing piece of metal.

The Grand Victorian Period - Experts divide the reign of Queen Victoria, also called The Victorian era (1837 - 1901) into three periods of about twenty years each; The Romantic Victorian Period (1837 - 1860), The Grand Victorian Period (1860 - 1880), and the Late or Aesthetic Victorian Period (1880 - 1901).

We consider this to be of the Grand Victorian Period.

This second Victorian period is famous for its ostentatious pieces set with pearls and diamonds (from South Africa). From ca. 1850 wealthy English had reported about jewelry from India and Japan, which heavily inspired the jewelers of this period. This period also corresponds with the death of Queen Victoria's husband King Albert making mourning jewelry (set with heavy dark stones) the type of jewelry specific for this period.

The connotation is obviously sentimental, symbolic and romantic with reminiscent Gothic and/or Renaissance patterns and an abundant use of motifs like anchors, birds, branches, crosses, hearts and snakes.

Technique (01): Cameo is a method of carving, or an item of jewellery or vessel made in this manner. It features a raised (positive) relief image. There are three main materials for Cameo carving; Shells or Agate (called a Hardstone cameo), and glass. Cameos can be produced by setting a carved relief, such as a portrait, onto a background of a contrasting colour. This is called an assembled cameo. Alternately, a cameo can be carved directly out of a material with integral layers or banding, such as (banded) agate or layered glass, where different layers have different colours. Sometimes dyes are used to enhance these colours. Cameos are often worn as jewellery. Stone cameos of great artistry were made in Greece dating back as far as the 6th century BC. They were very popular in Ancient Rome, and one of the most famous stone cameos from this period is the Gemma Claudia made for the Emperor Claudius. The technique has since enjoyed periodic revivals, notably in the early Renaissance, and again in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

Technique (02): Enamelling is an old and widely-adopted technology. The ancient Egyptians applied enamels to pottery and stone objects. The ancient Greeks, Celts, Russians, and Chinese also used enameling processes on metal objects. Enamel is the colorful result of fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 degrees Celsius. The powder melts and flows and hardens to a smooth, durable vitreous coating on metal, glass or ceramic. According to some sources, the word enamel comes from the High German word smelzan (to smelt) via the Old French esmail. Used as a noun, "an enamel" is a usually small decorative object, coated with enamel coating, such as a champlevé or a cloisonné (different techniques).

Style: Art Nouveau - Art Nouveau (French for New Style) is an international movement and style of art, architecture and applied art - especially the decorative arts - that peaked in popularity at the turn of the 20th century (1890–1905).

The name "Art Nouveau" is French for "new art". It is also known as Jugendstil, German for "youth style", named after the magazine Jugend, which promoted it, and in Italy, Stile Liberty from the department store in London, Liberty & Co., which popularised the style, and in Holland as “Sla-olie-stijl”, Dutch for “salad oil style” after a advertisement poster for this product that was made in that style.

A reaction to academic art of the 19th century, it is characterized by organic, especially floral and other plant-inspired motifs, as well as highly stylized, flowing curvilinear forms. Art Nouveau is an approach to design according to which artists should work on everything from architecture to furniture, making art part of everyday life. Although Art Nouveau fell out of favour with the arrival of 20th-century modernist styles, it is seen today as an important bridge between the historicism of Neoclassicism and modernism.
  -  See also: Art Nouveau or more info on styles

Style specifics: Art Nouveau - Although Art Nouveau took on distinctly localised tendencies as its geographic spread increase some general characteristics are indicative of the form. A description published in Pan magazine of Hermann Obrist's wall-hanging Cyclamen (1894) described it as "sudden violent curves generated by the crack of a whip", which became well known during the early spread of Art Nouveau.

Subsequently, not only did the work itself become better known as The Whiplash, but the term "whiplash" is frequently applied to the characteristic curves employed by Art Nouveau artists. Such decorative "whiplash" motifs, formed by dynamic, undulating, and flowing lines in a syncopated rhythm, are found throughout the architecture, painting, sculpture, and other forms of Art Nouveau design.(from: Wikipedia)

Precious stones: Five rubies . We did not check if the rubies are lab produced or not as this information has no influence on the value of this jewel. Natural rubies and lab produced rubies were both used in this era, rather more for their effect than for their intrinsic value.

Style specifics: Baroque is a style in art and decoration that developed shortly before 1600 and remained current in Europe until the emergence of the Rococo style c.1730. The style was a development of the Renaissance style and is characterized by lively, curved, and exuberant forms, by vigorous movement, and by rich ornament, based on classical sources, being symmetrical as distinguished from the asymmetry of the following Rococo style.

Style: something between the Late-Victorian and Belle Epoque style - Victorian decorative arts refers to the style of decorative arts during the Victorian era. The Victorian era is known for its eclectic revival and interpretation of historic styles and the introduction of cross-cultural influences from the middle east and Asia in furniture, fittings, and Interior decoration.

Victorian design is widely viewed as having indulged in a regrettable excess of ornament.
And the Belle Époque style (Belle Époque is French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century and lasted until World War I. Occurring during the time of the French Third Republic and the German Empire, the "Belle Époque" was named in retrospect, when it began to be considered a "golden age" the major powers of Europe, new technologies improved lives and the commercial arts adapted Renaissance and eighteenth-century styles to modern forms. In the newly rich United States, emerging from the Panic of 1873, the comparable epoch was dubbed the Gilded Age. In the United Kingdom, this epoch overlaps the end of what is called the Victorian Era there and the period named the Edwardian Era.

Technique: Enamelling is an old and widely-adopted technology.

Diamond(s): Nine rose cut diamonds and senailles . A senaille is a simplified rose cut diamond, a small diamond chip with perhaps a few polished facets. We do not have the weight of the rose cuts diamonds nor the senailles which is normal in our trade when it comes to rose cut diamonds and senailles.

Precious stones: Four sapphires . We did not check if the sapphires are lab produced or not as this information has no influence on the value of this jewel. Natural sapphires and lab produced sapphires were both used in this era, rather more for their effect than for their intrinsic value.

Birthstones: Diamond is the birthstone (or month stone) for April and sapphire for September.

Technique
This jewel features a filigree decoration, which is in fact thin gold wire twisted into refined motifs, in this case elegant little balls. You can also notice the use of granulation on this piece. Granulation is a technique where the goldsmith uses very small balls (granules) of metal, which are not soldered to the piece but welded. Both techniques demand very high skills and precision from the maker.

Hallmarks
On the outside of the ring is a flowered V, alongside a stamp that somewhat resembles the italic letter 'i'. Additionally, there is a lozenge shape that could be a stamp, though it may also be a sign of damage. The V was used between 1817 and 1831 for smaller domestic works.

Renaissance - The Renaissance (Italian: Rinascimento, from ri- "again" and nascere "be born") was a cultural movement that spanned roughly the 14th to the 17th century, beginning in Florence in the Late Middle Ages and later spreading to the rest of Europe. The term is also used more loosely to refer to the historic era, but since the changes of the Renaissance were not uniform across Europe, this is a general use of the term. As a cultural movement, it encompassed a resurgence of learning based on classical sources, the development of linear perspective in painting, and gradual but widespread educational reform. Traditionally, this intellectual transformation has resulted in the Renaissance being viewed as a bridge between the Middle Ages and the Modern era. Although the Renaissance saw revolutions in many intellectual pursuits, as well as social and political upheaval, it is perhaps best known for its artistic developments and the contributions of such polymaths as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, who inspired the term "Renaissance man".

The connotation is obviously sentimental, symbolic and romantic with reminiscent Gothic and/or Renaissance patterns and an abundant use of motifs like anchors, birds, branches, crosses, hearts and snakes.

Style: Art Deco - Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style which had its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century.
  -  See also: Art Deco or more info on styles

Style specifics: Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period.

Product story

An exquisite French Victorian brooch, circa 1860, breathes the romance of its era with a miniature painting emblematic of Madame de Pompadour's influential presence at the court of Louis XV. Exemplary of the Romantic Victorian Period's artistry, it presents an array of 49 natural rose-cut diamonds adorning 18k yellow gold with silver detailing. This fine piece is marked by the French eagle's head hallmark, denoting its rich provenance and superb condition—a testament to its storied past.

Product details

Madame de Pompadour - Madame de Pompadour was a member of the French court and was the official chief mistress of Louis XV from 1745 to 1751, and remained influential as court favourite until her death.

Pompadour took charge of the king's schedule and was a valued aide and advisor, despite her frail health and many political enemies. She secured titles of nobility for herself and her relatives, and built a network of clients and supporters. She was particularly careful not to alienate the Queen, Marie Leszczynska. On 8 February 1756, the Marquise de Pompadour was named as the thirteenth lady in waiting to the queen, a position considered the most prestigious at the court, which accorded her with honors.

Pompadour was a major patroness of architecture and decorative arts, especially porcelain. She was a patroness of the philosophes of the Enlightenment, including Voltaire.

Hostile critics at the time generally tarred her as a malevolent political influence, but historians are more favorable, emphasizing her successes as a patroness of the arts and a champion of French pride. Art historian Melissa Hyde argues that the critiques of Pompadour were driven by fears over the overturning of social and gender hierarchies that Pompadour's power and influence, as a woman who was not born into the aristocracy, represented. Style specifics: The Romantic Victorian Period - Experts divide the reign of Queen Victoria, also called The Victorian era (1837 - 1901) in to three periods of about twenty years each; The Romantic Victorian Period (1837 - 1860), The Grand Victorian Period (1860 - 1880), and the Late or Aesthetic Victorian Period (1880 - 1901).

Style specifics: The Belle Époque (French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century from the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) and lasted until World War I (1914-18).

In the Belle Époque cheap coal and cheap labour contributed to the cult of the orchid and made possible the perfection of fruits grown under glass, as the apparatus of state dinners extended to the upper classes; champagne was perfected during the Belle Époque. Exotic feathers and furs were more prominently featured in fashion than ever before, as haute couture was invented in Paris, the centre of the Belle Époque, where fashion began to move in a yearly cycle; in Paris restaurants such as Maxim's achieved a new splendour and cachet as places for the rich to parade, and the Opéra Garnier devoted enormous spaces to staircases as similar show places.

After mid-century, railways linked all the major cities of Europe to spa towns like Biarritz and Deauville; their carriages were rigorously divided into first-class and second-class, but the super-rich now began to commission private railway coaches, as exclusivity was a hallmark of opulent luxury. Bohemian lifestyles gained a different glamour, pursued in the cabarets of Montmartre.

Style specifics
Baroque is a style in art and decoration that developed shortly before 1600 and remained current in Europe until the emergence of the Rococo style c.1730. It was started in Italy, and spread to Germany, Austria, the Low Countries, and Spain and Portugal, with only a somewhat severely classical version being popular in France under Louis XIV. The style was a development of the Renaissance style and is characterized by lively, curved, and exuberant forms, by vigorous movement, and by rich ornament, based on classical sources, being symmetrical as distinguished from the asymmetry of the following Rococo style.

Extra information: Betrothal rings were used during Roman times, but weren't generally revived in the Western world until the 13th century. The first well-documented use of a diamond ring to signify engagement was by the Archduke Maximilian of Austria in imperial court of Vienna in 1477, upon his betrothal to Mary of Burgundy.

Before the 20th century, other types of betrothal gifts were common. Before the end of the 19th century, the bride-to-be frequently received a sewing thimble rather than a engagement ring. This practice was particularly common among religious groups that shunned jewelry. Engagement rings didn't become standard in the West until the end of the 19th century, and diamond rings didn't become common until the 1930s. Now, 80% of the women are offered a diamond ring to signify engagement. (from: Wikipedia)

Product story

A fascinating Baroque treasure, this 18K yellow gold ring is a testament to the period's intricate artistry. At its heart are two slightly larger table-cut diamonds, each surrounded by smaller diamonds arranged to form cross-like motifs. These “blooms” are placed so closely together that they share a single connecting setting, creating a unique interplay of overlapping forms. Positioned perpendicular to the band, this striking design captures the essence of 17th-century jewellery craftsmanship. Imagine the wonder of wearing such an extraordinary piece, steeped in over three centuries of history.

Product story

An exquisite circa 1700 Flemish heart pendant, emblematic of Rococo vivacity with its elaborate design rooted in Baroque artistry. This Belgian piece, absent of control marks, yet confidently attributed to the period, encapsulates romance through its heart-shaped silhouette set with thirty-eight rose-cut diamonds. Adorned with either a regal crown or a love trophy crowning, it reflects the triumph of love with symbols of ardour—torch, quiver, bow, and laurel—intertwined in a harmonious composition, crafted in fine silver.

Antique jewelry object group: pendant

Condition: very good condition

Country of origin: Although it does not carry any legible control marks we believe this to be of Belgian origin.

Style: Rococo - Rococo (less commonly roccoco) also referred to as "Late Baroque" is an 18th century style which developed as Baroque artists gave up their symmetry and became increasingly more ornate, florid, and playful.

Source of inspiration: Love and romance

Theme: Flemish Heart - One of the most peculiar and wide spread Flemish pieces of regional jewelry is a diamond heart pendant the so-called "Vlaams hart" (Dutch for “Flemish heart"). These hearts were fashionable in the 19th century and mostly made in gold backed silver (see also the silver on gold technique). A Flemish heart is a heart shaped field set with rose cut diamonds and/or senelles hanging under a crowning.

There are two sorts of crownings possible:
1) The crowing is a crown and then it is build up from horizontal, diamond embellished, tendrils that are resting on a smooth surfaced ajour cut band with flattened little rhombic bars. The tendrils from the top incline slightly over this ajour cut band towards the actual cross emphasizing the unity of the jewel.

2) The crowing as love trophy. A collection of four elements, a torch and quiver that are crossing each other, a bow that is horizontal mingled with them and all held together by a laurel. The slightly upwards direction of both ends of the bow refers to the St. Andrew's cross. Torch, quiver and bow are typical attributes to Amor (Eros) and the laurel refers to the triumph of love. This combination was already in use with the old Greek and Romans and later of course in the Renaissance and had a enormous success in France in the Louis XVI period (1774-1793).
