Style
Victorian - Victorian decorative arts refers to the style of decorative arts during the Victorian era. The Victorian era is known for its eclectic revival and interpretation of historic styles and the introduction of cross-cultural influences from the middle east and Asia in furniture, fittings, and Interior decoration. Victorian design is widely viewed as having indulged in a regrettable excess of ornament. The Arts and Crafts movement, the aesthetic movement, Anglo-Japanese style, and Art Nouveau style have their beginnings in the late Victorian era.

Style specifics
The Grand Victorian Period - Experts divide the reign of Queen Victoria, also called The Victorian era (1837 - 1901) into three periods of about twenty years each; The Romantic Victorian Period (1837 - 1860), The Grand Victorian Period (1860 - 1880), and the Late or Aesthetic Victorian Period (1880 - 1901).

We consider this to be of the Grand Victorian Period.

This second Victorian period is famous for its ostentatious pieces set with pearls and diamonds (from South Africa). From ca. 1850 wealthy English had reported about jewelry from India and Japan, which heavily inspired the jewelers of this period. This period also corresponds with the death of Queen Victoria's husband King Albert making mourning jewelry (set with heavy dark stones) the type of jewelry specific for this period.

Style
Something between Art Deco and Belle Époque - Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style which had its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century. The style originated in the 1920s and continued to be employed until after World War II. The term "art deco" first saw wide use after an exhibition in 1966, referring to the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes that was the culmination of high-end style modern in Paris. Led by the best designers in the decorative arts such as fashion, and interior design, Art Deco affected all areas of design throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including architecture and industrial design, as well as the visual arts such as painting, the graphic arts and film. At the time, this style was seen as elegant, glamorous, functional and modern. See also: Art Deco.

And the Belle Époque (French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century and lasted until World War I. Occurring during the time of the French Third Republic and the German Empire, the "Belle Époque" was named in retrospect, when it began to be considered a "golden age" the major powers of Europe, new technologies improved lives and the commercial arts adapted Renaissance and eighteenth-century styles to modern forms. In the newly rich United States, emerging from the Panic of 1873, the comparable epoch was dubbed the Gilded Age. This is something between Belle Époque and Art Deco.
The Belle Époque (French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century from the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) and lasted until World War I (1914-18).

In the United Kingdom, this epoch overlaps the end of what is called the Victorian Era there and the period named the Edwardian Era.

In the Belle Époque cheap coal and cheap labour contributed to the cult of the orchid and made possible the perfection of fruits grown under glass, as the apparatus of state dinners extended to the upper classes; champagne was perfected during the Belle Époque. Exotic feathers and furs were more prominently featured in fashion than ever before, as haute couture was invented in Paris, the centre of the Belle Époque, where fashion began to move in a yearly cycle; in Paris restaurants such as Maxim's achieved a new splendour and cachet as places for the rich to parade, and the Opéra Garnier devoted enormous spaces to staircases as similar show places.

After mid-century, railways linked all the major cities of Europe to spa towns like Biarritz and Deauville; their carriages were rigorously divided into first-class and second-class, but the super-rich now began to commission private railway coaches, as exclusivity was a hallmark of opulent luxury. Bohemian lifestyles gained a different glamour, pursued in the cabarets of Montmartre.

Art Deco
Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period. Art Deco moved away from the soft pastels and organic forms of its style predecessor, Art Nouveau, and embraced influences from many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative.

Diamonds
Two large pear shaped rose cut diamonds. with a total weight of 2.91ct (one is 1.45ct and the other 1.46ct)
Four rose cut diamonds. We have not removed the four other rose-cut diamonds from their settings, but estimate the two upper stones to be approximately 0.80 carats each and the two middle stones approximately 0.50 carats each, resulting in an estimated combined total weight of 2.60 carats.
The total weight of all six rose-cut diamonds in these earrings is therefore approximately 5.50 carats.

All diamond weights, colour grades, and clarity are approximate, as we generally do not remove stones from their settings to maintain the integrity of the piece. However, the two largest stones were taken out to obtain their exact weight, while the remaining four diamonds have been left in their settings.

We consider this to be of the Romantic Victorian Period. This period covers the coronation of Victoria as Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and her marriage to King Albert and their love, their devotion to their marriage and to their country are the sources of inspiration for this period. The jewels of this period are made of intricate carvings, special techniques where the enamel is subtly worked. These techniques allowed to give the jewel a certain opulence with less precious metal needed. As precious metals were really rare at that time. Highly favored (semi-) precious stones in this period are amethyst, coral, garnets, seed pearls and turquoises. The connotation is obviously sentimental, symbolic and romantic with reminiscent Gotic and/or Renaissance patterns and an abundant use of motifs like anchors, birds, branches, crosses, hearts and snakes.

Antique Iberian earrings in 18K yellow gold, crafted around 1750 in the Baroque style. With their long, articulated design and richly curved forms, they embody the exuberance and symmetry typical of the period. Each is set with a suite of glowing garnets, their deep red tones adding warmth and drama. Owing to the delicacy of their goldwork, many such earrings have not survived, making this pair a rare presence on today’s market and a fine testament to Iberian craftsmanship.

not perfect condition. The reverse of each earring shows a significant loss of gold at the lower sections, exposing the original lacquer filling. Style specifics
Baroque is a style in art and decoration that developed shortly before 1600 and remained current in Europe until the emergence of the Rococo style c.1730. It was started in Italy, and spread to Germany, Austria, the Low Countries, and Spain and Portugal, with only a somewhat severely classical version being popular in France under Louis XIV. The style was a development of the Renaissance style and is characterized by lively, curved, and exuberant forms, by vigorous movement, and by rich ornament, based on classical sources, being symmetrical as distinguished from the asymmetry of the following Rococo style.

Country of origin
Although it does not carry any legible control marks we believe this to be of French origin.

Style
Art Nouveau - Art Nouveau (French for New Style) is an international movement and style of art, architecture and applied art - especially the decorative arts - that peaked in popularity at the turn of the 20th century (1890–1905).

The name "Art Nouveau" is French for "new art". It is also known as Jugendstil, German for "youth style", named after the magazine Jugend, which promoted it, and in Italy, Stile Liberty from the department store in London, Liberty & Co., which popularised the style, and in Holland as “Sla-olie-stijl”, Dutch for “salad oil style” after a advertisement poster for this product that was made in that style.

A reaction to academic art of the 19th century, it is characterized by organic, especially floral and other plant-inspired motifs, as well as highly stylized, flowing curvilinear forms. Art Nouveau is an approach to design according to which artists should work on everything from architecture to furniture, making art part of everyday life. Although Art Nouveau fell out of favour with the arrival of 20th-century modernist styles, it is seen today as an important bridge between the historicism of Neoclassicism and modernism.

Style specifics
Art Nouveau - Although Art Nouveau took on distinctly localised tendencies as its geographic spread increase some general characteristics are indicative of the form. A description published in Pan magazine of Hermann Obrist's wall-hanging Cyclamen (1894) described it as "sudden violent curves generated by the crack of a whip", which became well known during the early spread of Art Nouveau.

Subsequently, not only did the work itself become better known as The Whiplash, but the term "whiplash" is frequently applied to the characteristic curves employed by Art Nouveau artists. Such decorative "whiplash" motifs, formed by dynamic, undulating, and flowing lines in a syncopated rhythm, are found throughout the architecture, painting, sculpture, and other forms of Art Nouveau design.(from: Wikipedia)

Extra information
Betrothal rings were used during Roman times, but weren't generally revived in the Western world until the 13th century. The first well-documented use of a diamond ring to signify engagement was by the Archduke Maximilian of Austria in imperial court of Vienna in 1477, upon his betrothal to Mary of Burgundy.

Before the 20th century, other types of betrothal gifts were common. Before the end of the 19th century, the bride-to-be frequently received a sewing thimble rather than a engagement ring. This practice was particularly common among religious groups that shunned jewelry. Engagement rings didn't become standard in the West until the end of the 19th century, and diamond rings didn't become common until the 1930s. Now, 80% of the women are offered a diamond ring to signify engagement. (from: Wikipedia)

Georgian - Georgian style is the name given in most English-speaking countries to the set of styles current between 1720 and 1840. It is eponymous for the first four British monarchs of the House of Hanover—George I of Great Britain, George II of Great Britain, George III of the United Kingdom, and George IV of the United Kingdom—who reigned in continuous succession from August 1714 to June 1830.

Technique
The rose cuts are set on foil. This is a special technique that was used to bring the lustre of the diamonds to its best quality.

Enamelling is an old and widely-adopted technology. The ancient Egyptians applied enamels to pottery and stone objects. The ancient Greeks, Celts, Russians, and Chinese also used enameling processes on metal objects. Enamel is the colorful result of fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 degrees Celsius. The powder melts and flows and hardens to a smooth, durable vitreous coating on metal, glass or ceramic. According to some sources, the word enamel comes from the High German word smelzan (to smelt) via the Old French esmail. Used as a noun, "an enamel" is a usually small decorative object, coated with enamel coating, such as a champlevé or a cloisonné (different techniques).

engagement ring - Especially in Western cultures, an engagement ring is a ring indicating the that the person wearing it is engaged to be married. In the United Kingdom, and North America, engagement rings are traditionally worn only by women, and rings can feature gemstones. In other cultures men and women usually wear matching rings, which can be plain. In some cultures, engagement rings are also used as wedding rings.

Conventionally, the woman's ring is presented as a betrothal gift by a man to his prospective spouse while he proposes marriage or directly after she accepts his marriage proposal. It represents a formal agreement to future marriage. Rings can be bought by the man, the couple together, or by each partner for the other.

In North America and the United Kingdom, it is worn on the left hand ring finger, while in Poland and Ukraine, it is customary for the ring to be worn on the right hand. In Germany, the ring is worn on the left hand while engaged, but moved to the right hand when married. Similar traditions purportedly date to classical times, dating back from an early usage reportedly referring to the fourth finger of the left hand as containing the vena amoris or "vein of love".

In the 20th century, if he could afford it, the typical Western groom privately selected and purchased an engagement ring, which he then presented to his desired bride when he proposed marriage. More recently, couples frequently select an engagement ring together. (from Wikipedia)

Style
Art Deco - Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style which had its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century.

This ring, a harmonious blend of fifties flair and Art Deco's geometric elegance, tells a tale of timeless commitment. Crafted around 1950, it carries the era's spirit, touching the threshold of Retro and Art Deco styles with its platinum gleam and bold design. At its heart, a 2.20 carat untreated emerald, encircled by 14 old mine-cut diamonds totalling approximately 2.24 carat, whispers stories of ancient Roman betrothals and the enduring tradition of engagement rings that became standardised with diamonds in the West around the 1930s. Each stone is a testament to natural beauty and authenticity, echoing a history of love's promise.

Diamond rings became widespread from the 1930s onward. Today, around 80% of women receive a diamond engagement ring. (from: Wikipedia)

Style: Between Edwardian and Art Deco - The Edwardian era or Edwardian period in the United Kingdom is the period covering the reign of King Edward VII, 1901 to 1910. The death of Queen Victoria in January 1901 and the succession of her son, Edward, marked the start of a new century and the end of the Victorian era. While Victoria had shunned society, Edward was the leader of a fashionable elite which set a style influenced by the art and fashions of continental Europe—perhaps because of the King's fondness for travel. The era was marked by significant shifts in politics as sections of society which had been largely excluded from wielding power in the past, such as common labourers and women, became increasingly politicised. Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style which had its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century.

Style specifics: As for its elegant design, this jewel has the finesse of an Edwardian piece reacting gracefully against the very geometrical forms of Art Deco that was strongly influenced by Cubism. However, because both Edwardian and Art Deco styles were contemporaries of each other, we sometimes notice pieces - like this one - that carry both influences.

Style
Georgian - Georgian style is the name given in most English-speaking countries to the set of styles current between 1720 and 1840. It is eponymous for the first four British monarchs of the House of Hanover—George I of Great Britain, George II of Great Britain, George III of the United Kingdom, and George IV of the United Kingdom—who reigned in continuous succession from August 1714 to June 1830.

Technique
This jewel features a filigree decoration, which is in fact thin gold wire twisted into refined motifs, in this case elegant little balls. You can also notice the use of granulation on this piece. Granulation is a technique where the goldsmith uses very small balls (granules) of metal, which are not soldered to the piece but welded. Both techniques demand very high skills and precision from the maker.

Hallmarks
On the outside of the ring is a lion's head, facing left, which is a Dutch hallmark used from 1814 onwards. On one corner of a lozenge shape, also on the outside, there is a mark that may either be a damage or the remnant of a stamp. Additionally, there is a capital letter 'G', also on the outside.

Product story

An exquisite French Late Victorian bangle, crafted from historical ivory and adorned with majestic gold eagle head ornaments, evokes the era's grandeur. This piece, dating back to the 1890s, mirrors the exceptional goldsmithing and sculpting prowess synonymous with French artistry. Without a master's mark, yet its hallmark authenticates its French origin. Its condition is excellent, with the eagle heads ingeniously engineered to pivot on the wrist, epitomising the innovative spirit bridging Victorian opulence and the nascent Art Nouveau movement.

Product details

First let us make the statement that we are glad that the trade in modern ivory is forbidden. Next statement we make is that this piece is over 100 years old and was made in a time that there was no global awareness yet of possible endangered species. We were hesitating to make this purchase as we normally do not buy ivory pieces. What drew us over the line is the fact that this bangle magnificently reflects the period it was made in, the late Nineteenth Century, showing the great goldsmith and sculpting skills the French are so well known for.

An extreme decorative bangle out of undamaged ivory with strong realistically gold made eagle heads, hallmarked with French hallmarks. Unfortunately we couldn't find any master marks in them. But even if we would, the chance that we could then determine the jeweler who made it would be small, as the index of French Master marks is one of the worst to consult. It is made to wear because the heads can be slightly turned once on the wrist.

We have contacted the Belgian office for environmental issues and were told that within the European Community we do not need a CITES-certificate for this bangle as it is antique. Only when our client for this bracelet lives outside the European Community we do need a so-called CITES-document. Only with the name of the buyer of this bracelet we can ask for this certificate and itcan take up to two weeks for the Belgian office of environmental issues to send us this document.

Product story

This Early-Victorian bi-colour gold-backed pendant from 1830 embodies a treasure of symbols through a deep pink garnet heart, a silver-topped bow, snake, cross and anchor encrusted with three European cut diamonds and with a total of 86 rose cut diamonds set in foil.

While the ruby-eyed snake wraps around the cross, its head emerges to the centre of the garnet and emphasizes the opulent heart-shape. This meaningful composition reveals the snake's role of protection, wisdom, hope and fertility when it comes to matters of the heart from deep within the garnet's core.
This gemstone of love is topped by a cross which extends from behind the garnet into an anchor, resulting in an Anchored cross or also called a Mariner's cross. Generally signifying hope, this bejeweled imagery contributes even more to the message of promise and faith in this jewel.
To complete the message of hope and tenderness, the above-mentioned piece with a 14K yellow gold back dangles from an adorable bow-knot with an 18K red gold back which literally depicts the strong bond of love. This bow particulalry grants you the possiblity to even wear this extraordinary jewellery piece as a brooch.
For more information, please look below at the chapter with "Extra information".

It couldn't be more clear from the craftsmanship and the total design that this jewel doesn't just speak of promises and fairytales, but it truly achieves to convey the message of love.

Style specifics: The Romantic Victorian Period - Experts divide the reign of Queen Victoria, also called The Victorian era (1837 - 1901) in to three periods of about twenty years each; The Romantic Victorian Period (1837 - 1860), The Grand Victorian Period (1860 - 1880), and the Late or Aesthetic Victorian Period (1880 - 1901).

Period: ca. 1830

Source of inspiration: Symbolism (for snake and anchor)

Theme: snake, anchor and bow

Material: Silver on top and backed with 18K red gold (on bow) and 14K yellow gold (on anchor) (see explanation on silver on gold).
  -  (more info on precious metals)

Technique: The rose cuts and the cabochon garnet are set on foil. This is a special technique that was used to bring the lustre of the diamonds to its best quality.

Extra information: Anchor - In heraldry an anchor frequently appears on the flags and coats of arms of institutions involved with the sea, both naval and commercial, as well as of port cities and seacoast regions and provinces in various countries. There also exists in heraldry the "Anchored Cross", or Mariner's Cross, a stylized cross in the shape of an anchor. The symbol can be used to signify 'fresh start' or 'hope'. The New Testament refers to the Christian's hope as "an anchor of the soul" (Hebrews 6:19). In 1887, the Delta Gamma Fraternity adopted the anchor as its badge to signify hope. (from Wikipedia).

Snakes and serpents - Serpent is a word of Latin origin (from serpens, serpentis "something that creeps, snake", deriving from the greek word "erpo" and "erpeto", crawl and serpent) that is commonly used in a specifically mythic or religious context, signifying a snake that is to be regarded not as a mundane natural phenomenon nor as an object of scientific zoology, but as the bearer of some potent symbolic value.

The serpent is one of the oldest and most widespread mythological symbols. Considerable overlap exists in the symbolic values that serpents represent in various cultures. Some such overlap is due to the common historical ancestry of contemporary symbols. Much of the overlap, however, is traceable to the common biological characteristics of snakes.

In some instances, serpents serve as positive symbols with whom it is possible to identify or to sympathize; in other instances, serpents serve as negative symbols, representing opponents or antagonists of figures or principles with which it is possible to identify. Serpents also appear as ambivalent figures, neither wholly positive nor wholly negative in valence. An example of a serpent used as a positive symbol is Mucalinda, the king of snakes who shielded the Buddha from the elements as the Buddha sat in meditation. An example of a serpent used as a negative symbol is the snake who tempted Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, as described in the Book of Genesis. (From: Wikipedia)

Product story

This French Antique Gold and Coral Cameo Necklace, hailing from the Romantic Victorian Period around 1850, is a stunning representation of the era's artistic expression. Crafted in 18K yellow gold, the necklace features a beautifully carved coral cameo, a technique that dates back to ancient times and saw a revival during the Victorian era. The coral's warm hues against the gold create a striking contrast, embodying the sentimental and symbolic themes prevalent in the period. This piece is not only a remarkable example of the intricate craftsmanship of the time but also a testament to the romanticism and devotion that defined the Victorian era.

Technique: Cameo is a method of carving, or an item of jewellery or vessel made in this manner. It features a raised (positive) relief image. There are three main materials for Cameo carving; Shells or Agate (called a Hardstone cameo), and glass. Cameos can be produced by setting a carved relief, such as a portrait, onto a background of a contrasting colour. This is called an assembled cameo. Alternately, a cameo can be carved directly out of a material with integral layers or banding, such as (banded) agate or layered glass, where different layers have different colours. Sometimes dyes are used to enhance these colours. Cameos are often worn as jewellery. Stone cameos of great artistry were made in Greece dating back as far as the 6th century BC. They were very popular in Ancient Rome, and one of the most famous stone cameos from this period is the Gemma Claudia made for the Emperor Claudius. The technique has since enjoyed periodic revivals, notably in the early Renaissance, and again in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

Country of origin
Although it bears no discernible control marks indicating its origin, there is a Dutch hallmark present, typically used for older items submitted for re-assessment. This does not guarantee it was actually made in the Netherlands. However, the 14K gold content could serve as an indicator, as this is a hallmark characteristic of Dutch craftsmanship, though it remains an uncertain attribution.

Style
Rococo - Rococo (less commonly roccoco) also referred to as "Late Baroque" is an 18th century style which developed as Baroque artists gave up their symmetry and became increasingly more ornate, florid, and playful. Rococo rooms were designed as total works of art with elegant and ornate furniture, small sculptures, ornamental mirrors, and tapestry complementing architecture, reliefs, and wall paintings. It was largely supplanted by the Neoclassic style. In 1835 the Dictionary of the French Academy stated that the word Rococo "usually covers the kind of ornament, style and design associated with Louis XV's reign and the beginning of that of Louis XVI". It includes therefore, all types of art produced around the middle of the 18th century in France.

Style specifics
Rococo is a style of decoration that followed, c.1730, the baroque style in France (where it was also called rocaille), the principal features of which are asymmetry of ornament and a repertoire consisting to a considerable extent of rockwork, shells, flowers, foliage, and scrollwork. It was developed in France under Louis XV, 1715-74, and spread to Italy, Germany, and Austria and to a lesser extent to England.

Style
Art Deco - Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style which had its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century.

Style specifics
Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period. Art Deco moved away from the soft pastels and organic forms of its style predecessor, Art Nouveau, and embraced influences from many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative.

Embracing the epitome of Art Deco elegance, this circa 1920 engagement ring, with its abstract geometric motifs, hails from an era renowned for its glamour and sophistication. Crafted in a marriage of platinum and 18K yellow gold, the piece boasts two old mine brilliant cut diamonds, totalling approximately 1.20 carats, and an entourage of 54 old brilliant cut diamonds. Beyond its sparkle, it carries the weight of history; a reminder of times when betrothal gifts evolved from thimbles to the lustrous diamond rings we cherish today. Bearing the sentimental weight of the Grand Victorian era, this Belgian-crafted arrow brooch, festooned with 34 rose-cut diamonds and eight natural pearls, is a relic of 1870—a token of longing captured in 18k pink gold and silver. More than mere adornment, it serves as a silent accomplice to Cupid's endeavours, a poignant gift that whispers to the heart's deepest desires, aiming with precision at the cherished target of affection and remembrance.

Style: Victorian - Victorian decorative arts refers to the style of decorative arts during the Victorian era.

Style specifics: The Grand Victorian Period - Experts divide the reign of Queen Victoria, also called The Victorian era (1837 - 1901) into three periods of about twenty years each; The Romantic Victorian Period (1837 - 1860), The Grand Victorian Period (1860 - 1880), and the Late or Aesthetic Victorian Period (1880 - 1901).

Baroque - Baroque is an artistic style prevalent from the late 16th century to the early 18th century in Europe.

Style: Art Nouveau - Art Nouveau (French for New Style) is an international movement and style of art, architecture and applied art - especially the decorative arts - that peaked in popularity at the turn of the 20th century (1890–1905).

Style specifics: Art Nouveau - Although Art Nouveau took on distinctly localised tendencies as its geographic spread increase some general characteristics are indicative of the form.

Product story

An Art Nouveau toi et moi ring, made around 1900, in 18 carat yellow gold and platinum, its twin terminals curling in a supple botanical sweep, a signature flourish of the Art Nouveau style. An old European cut diamond meets an oval ruby, each in light claw settings, while the crossing shoulders are traced with antique cut diamonds for a soft, candlelit glint. The French name 'Toi et Moi' says it plainly: you and me, held together in one ring, a small vow you can wear, and a story that has every chance of becoming an heirloom.

Style
Art Nouveau is an international design movement that flourished around 1890 to 1905. In jewellery it is recognised by flowing lines and nature inspired ornament.

The style circulated across Europe under different names, including Jugendstil in German speaking regions and Stile Liberty in Italy. In the Netherlands it was sometimes nicknamed “Slaolie stijl”, meaning “salad oil style”.

Art Nouveau reacted against nineteenth century historicist design and favoured organic motifs, especially flowers and leaves, drawn into stylised flowing curves. In jewellery it helped move taste away from revival styles and towards a more modern visual language.
