Product story

Circa 1900 Art Nouveau brooch in 18ct yellow gold, formed as a whiplash spray of ribbons and a blossoming flower. Eight tapered pearls, often called ‘dogtooth’ pearls, are set as petals around a warm gold centre, their soft lustre playing against the lightly textured goldwork. A charming, sculptural jewel of the period. Unmarked, with safety chain.

Style
Art Nouveau - Art Nouveau (French for New Style) is an international movement and style of art, architecture and applied art - especially the decorative arts - that peaked in popularity at the turn of the 20th century (1890–1905).

The name "Art Nouveau" is French for "new art". It is also known as Jugendstil, German for "youth style", named after the magazine Jugend, which promoted it, and in Italy, Stile Liberty from the department store in London, Liberty & Co., which popularised the style, and in Holland as “Sla-olie-stijl”, Dutch for “salad oil style” after a advertisement poster for this product that was made in that style.

A reaction to academic art of the 19th century, it is characterized by organic, especially floral and other plant-inspired motifs, as well as highly stylized, flowing curvilinear forms. Art Nouveau is an approach to design according to which artists should work on everything from architecture to furniture, making art part of everyday life. Although Art Nouveau fell out of favour with the arrival of 20th-century modernist styles, it is seen today as an important bridge between the historicism of Neoclassicism and modernism.

Extra information
These unusual tapered pearls are often called “dogtooth pearls” in the jewellery trade, a descriptive term for elongated freshwater pearls shaped like small fangs or petals. Around 1900, such pearls were frequently used as stylised flower petals, because their soft lustre and gentle irregularity bring a natural, lively effect to the design. They are traditionally associated with North American river mussels, including the wider Mississippi River system, which supplied freshwater pearls used in antique and early twentieth century jewellery.

Style: Art Deco - Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style which had its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century. The style originated in the 1920s and continued to be employed until after World War II. The term "art deco" first saw wide use after an exhibition in 1966, referring to the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes that was the culmination of high-end style modern in Paris. Led by the best designers in the decorative arts such as fashion, and interior design, Art Deco affected all areas of design throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including architecture and industrial design, as well as the visual arts such as painting, the graphic arts and film. At the time, this style was seen as elegant, glamorous, functional and modern.

Style specifics: Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period. Art Deco moved away from the soft pastels and organic forms of its style predecessor, Art Nouveau, and embraced influences from many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative.

Product story

This captivating Art Deco cigarette case, crafted in France in 1928, may hold a mysterious connection between General MacArthur and Charles Lindbergh. The inscription inside, "To Violet from Major McArthur 3-12-1929," sparks intrigue. The possible link between Major MacArthur and the famous aviator Lindbergh, combined with the timeline of significant events—including Lindbergh's transatlantic flight and the tragic Lindbergh baby abduction—adds an air of suspense.

Product details

Is this the missing link between two major figures of the early 20th century who dominated the headlines?

General MacArthur and Charles Lindbergh

The thrill of dealing in antique and vintage jewellery continues to astound us, even after more than four decades. The thought often crosses our minds: "If only our collection could speak… " Yet, we must remember that our jewellery pieces do communicate in their own unique way. It’s one of the many joys of our work to uncover their past lives by chasing down facts, often treading the line between history and imagination.

This exquisite vanity or cigarette case, embellished with mother-of-pearl, gold, gilded silver, and Japanese lacquer, tells us through its hallmarks that it was manufactured in France from 18K gold and gilded silver, and imported into London in 1928.

However, it speaks even more profoundly through the engraving inside: "To Violet from Major McArthur 3-12-1929." Naturally, the question arises: "Who are Violet and Major McArthur?" Thus began our quest for answers.

First and foremost, the most famous Major MacArthur is the World War I hero, Douglas MacArthur. Could he be the man who gifted this case to Violet? Violet, on the other hand, appears far more elusive. However, there is one notable connection between a certain Violet Sharp and Major MacArthur: the famous Charles Lindbergh. We have outlined the key dates below, allowing you to draw your own conclusions. To us, this case could be a relic of an interwar romance—or even a forbidden love. Either way, it seems impossible according to the facts listed below.

Is each moment in this timeline a mere coincidence, or too much of a coincidence to dismiss?

Timeline:

  • 1922: MacArthur marries Louise Cromwell Brooks in New York.
  • 1922-1930: MacArthur is sent to the Philippines under General John J. Pershing's command, following a negative evaluation—rumoured to be influenced by Pershing’s interest in MacArthur's wife, according to Mrs. MacArthur.
  • 1925: MacArthur is promoted to Major.
  • 1927: Lindbergh successfully completes the first solo transatlantic flight from New York to Paris.
  • 1927: Lindbergh is awarded the Medal of Honour for his transatlantic flight.
  • 1927: MacArthur receives the Medal of Honour for his actions during WWI, originally intended for Lindbergh.
  • 1927-1928: The case is imported into London.
  • 28/07/1928 - 12/08/1928: MacArthur represents the US at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam.
  • 18/06/1929: MacArthur divorces Louise Cromwell Brooks.
  • 03/12/1929: MacArthur gifts the case to Violet.
  • Pre-1930: Violet is married and living in London until her divorce.
  • 22/06/1930: Lindbergh's first son is born, and Violet is appointed as a household maid for the Lindbergh family in Morris County, New Jersey (approximately 100km from West Point, New York).
  • 01/03/1932: Lindbergh's son is abducted. Violet becomes a prime suspect due to her inability or refusal to provide an alibi.
  • 10/06/1932: Violet commits suicide.
  • 1930-1935: MacArthur is appointed Chief of Staff of the United States Army, likely stationed at West Point, New York.
  • 1935: MacArthur meets Jean Faircloth during his journey to the Philippines for a new mission.
  • 1944: Lindbergh and MacArthur collaborate on a WWII mission.

For further information, we refer you to Agatha Christie's "Murder on the Orient Express" (filmed in 1974 and remade in 2017), which was inspired by the abduction of Charles Lindbergh Jr.

This is exactly what we cherish about our work—the thrill of historical research that opens unexpected windows into the past.

Technique: Lacquer or Japanning - Just as "china" is a common term for porcelain, "japanning" describes the European technique for imitating Asian lacquerware. As Asian lacquerwork gained popularity in Europe during the 17th century, European artisans developed their own techniques, applying several coats of varnish, each heat-dried and polished, to achieve a similar finish. The technique, which became known as japanning, gained widespread popularity in the 18th century. Originally used on pottery and wood, japanning later became popular as a coating for metalware. By the 20th century, the term was applied broadly to various varnishes and lacquers. (from Wikipedia)

Belle Époque - The Belle Époque (French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century and lasted until World War I. Occurring during the time of the French Third Republic and the German Empire, the "Belle Époque" was named in retrospect, when it began to be considered a "golden age" the major powers of Europe, new technologies improved lives and the commercial arts adapted Renaissance and eighteenth-century styles to modern forms. In the newly rich United States, emerging from the Panic of 1873, the comparable epoch was dubbed the Gilded Age. In the United Kingdom, this epoch overlaps the end of what is called the Victorian Era there and the period named the Edwardian Era.

Style specifics
Baroque is a style in art and decoration that developed shortly before 1600 and remained current in Europe until the emergence of the Rococo style c.1730. It was started in Italy, and spread to Germany, Austria, the Low Countries, and Spain and Portugal, with only a somewhat severely classical version being popular in France under Louis XIV. The style was a development of the Renaissance style and is characterized by lively, curved, and exuberant forms, by vigorous movement, and by rich ornament, based on classical sources, being symmetrical as distinguished from the asymmetry of the following Rococo style.

Style
Rococo - Rococo (less commonly roccoco) also referred to as "Late Baroque" is an 18th century style which developed as Baroque artists gave up their symmetry and became increasingly more ornate, florid, and playful. Rococo rooms were designed as total works of art with elegant and ornate furniture, small sculptures, ornamental mirrors, and tapestry complementing architecture, reliefs, and wall paintings. It was largely supplanted by the Neoclassic style. In 1835 the Dictionary of the French Academy stated that the word Rococo "usually covers the kind of ornament, style and design associated with Louis XV's reign and the beginning of that of Louis XVI". It includes therefore, all types of art produced around the middle of the 18th century in France.

Style specifics
Rococo is a style of decoration that followed, c.1730, the baroque style in France (where it was also called rocaille), the principal features of which are asymmetry of ornament and a repertoire consisting to a considerable extent of rockwork, shells, flowers, foliage, and scrollwork. It was developed in France under Louis XV, 1715-74, and spread to Italy, Germany, and Austria and to a lesser extent to England.

Style specifics
Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period.

Extra information
Betrothal rings were used during Roman times, but weren't generally revived in the Western world until the 13th century. The first well-documented use of a diamond ring to signify engagement was by the Archduke Maximilian of Austria in imperial court of Vienna in 1477, upon his betrothal to Mary of Burgundy.

Before the 20th century, other types of betrothal gifts were common. Before the end of the 19th century, the bride-to-be frequently received a sewing thimble rather than a engagement ring. This practice was particularly common among religious groups that shunned jewelry. Engagement rings didn't become standard in the West until the end of the 19th century, and diamond rings didn't become common until the 1930s. Now, 80% of the women are offered a diamond ring to signify engagement. (from: Wikipedia)

Style
Victorian - Victorian decorative arts refers to the style of decorative arts during the Victorian era. The Victorian era is known for its eclectic revival and interpretation of historic styles and the introduction of cross-cultural influences from the middle east and Asia in furniture, fittings, and Interior decoration. Victorian design is widely viewed as having indulged in a regrettable excess of ornament. The Arts and Crafts movement, the aesthetic movement, Anglo-Japanese style, and Art Nouveau style have their beginnings in the late Victorian era.

Style specifics
The Romantic Victorian Period - Experts divide the reign of Queen Victoria, also called The Victorian era (1837 - 1901) in to three periods of about twenty years each; The Romantic Victorian Period (1837 - 1860), The Grand Victorian Period (1860 - 1880), and the Late or Aesthetic Victorian Period (1880 - 1901).

We consider this to be of the Romantic Victorian Period. This period covers the coronation of Victoria as Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and her marriage to King Albert and their love, their devotion to their marriage and to their country are the sources of inspiration for this period. The jewels of this period are made of intricate carvings, special techniques where the enamel is subtly worked. These techniques allowed to give the jewel a certain opulence with less precious metal needed. As precious metals were really rare at that time. Highly favored (semi-) precious stones in this period are amethyst, coral, garnets, seed pearls and turquoises. The connotation is obviously sentimental, symbolic and romantic with reminiscent Gotic and/or Renaissance patterns and an abundant use of motifs like anchors, birds, branches, crosses, hearts and snakes.

Style: Something between Art Deco and Belle Époque
- Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style which had its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century. -  See also: Art Deco.

Style specifics: This is something between Belle Époque and Art Deco.
The Belle Époque
(French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century from the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) and lasted until World War I (1914-18).

In the Belle Époque cheap coal and cheap labour contributed to the cult of the orchid and made possible the perfection of fruits grown under glass, as the apparatus of state dinners extended to the upper classes; champagne was perfected during the Belle Époque. Exotic feathers and furs were more prominently featured in fashion than ever before, as haute couture was invented in Paris, the centre of the Belle Époque, where fashion began to move in a yearly cycle; in Paris restaurants such as Maxim's achieved a new splendour and cachet as places for the rich to parade, and the Opéra Garnier devoted enormous spaces to staircases as similar show places.

After mid-century, railways linked all the major cities of Europe to spa towns like Biarritz and Deauville; their carriages were rigorously divided into first-class and second-class, but the super-rich now began to commission private railway coaches, as exclusivity was a hallmark of opulent luxury. Bohemian lifestyles gained a different glamour, pursued in the cabarets of Montmartre.

Art Deco
Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period.

Technique: Reversed intaglio (see the next explanation on English Crystal)

Extra information (01): Reverse intaglio crystal or English Crystal - A crystal cut in the form of a cabochon, shallow or domes, that is carved in intaglio on it flat back with a motif that is realistically painted in minute detail and is surrounded by a transparent ground. The deeper the carving, the more pronounced the three-dimensional trompe l'oeil effect, which is sometimes enhanced by a backing of thin layer of mother-of-pearl. The carved motif, for pieces mounted in a circular gold band as a tie pin, cuff links, button, or studs for men, was usually a racing horse, game bird or dog, and for pieces in a brooch or a locket for women, a floral design or a monogram; some examples depict an insect or a coaching scene.

Sometimes two crystals are mounted back-to-back to form a spherical pendant, preferably with the motifs not identical but complementarily depicting the front and back views of the same subject, e.g. the head of a dog. Some examples consist of two or even three superimposed hollow cabochons, each carved with a different motif, thus increasing the effect of perspective.

The technique was originated by Marius Pradier, of Belgium, c. 1860 (he made the only known-signed example). In England it was developed by Thomas Cook in the early 1860s and carried on by his pupil Thomas Bean and the latter's son Edmund and grandson Edgar (d. 1954).

After the popularity of the pieces in the late Victorian era, the high quality deteriorated by the 1920s, when examples were also being made in France and the United States (some modern pieces depicting motor cars and aeroplanes). The crystals have long been identified with the Hancocks firm. The crystals have sometimes been referred to by the misnomers 'Essex Crystal' or 'Wessex crystal', owing to the erroneous assumption that they were decorated c. 1860 by the enamel portrait painter William Essex (d. 1869).

Imitations have been made of carved and painted glass, and even of a glass cabochon above a printed paper design.

Extra information (02): Jack Russell Terrier - The Jack Russell Terrier is a small terrier that has its origins in fox hunting in England. It is principally white-bodied and smooth, rough or broken-coated and can be any colour.

The small white fox-working terriers we know today were first bred by the Reverend John Russell, a parson and hunting enthusiast born in 1795, and they can trace their origin to the now extinct English white terrier. Difficulty in differentiating the dog from the creature it was pursuing brought about the need for a mostly white dog, and so in 1819 during his last year of university at Exeter College, Oxford, he purchased a small white and tan terrier female named Trump from a local milkman in the nearby small hamlet of Elsfield or Marston.

Trump epitomised his ideal fox terrier, which, at the time, was a term used for any terrier which was used to bolt foxes out of their burrows. Her colouring was described as "...white, with just a patch of dark tan over each eye and ear; whilst a similar dot, not larger than a penny piece, marks the root of the tail." Davies, a friend of Russell's, wrote: "Trump was such an animal as Russell had only seen in his dreams".

She was the basis for a breeding program to develop a terrier with high stamina for the hunt as well as the courage and formation to chase out foxes that had gone to ground. By the 1850s, these dogs were recognised as a distinct breed. From: Wikipedia)

Product story

When we select a jewel for our collection, we look for more than beauty. A piece must also tell the truth of its own time. To us, a jewel deserves its place when both its subject and its technique are faithful to the period in which it was made. A jewel that imitates a period rather than belongs to it would not easily find a place in our collection.

Seen through that lens, this brooch stands firmly within its century. The scene of Venus, Mars and Vulcan reflects the nineteenth-century fascination with classical ideals, revived through the art of Bertel Thorvaldsen. The Danish sculptor, often mentioned alongside Canova, brought to neoclassicism a northern calm and clarity that gave myth new dignity. Born in Copenhagen as the son of a woodcarver, he rose to international fame in Rome, where his serene reliefs, like the one echoed here, were admired across Europe.

The technique, too, belongs entirely to its age. Electroplating was then a modern wonder, uniting science and artistry in a shared pursuit of beauty. It was a century that admired progress as deeply as perfection. Even Napoleon marvelled at new metals such as aluminium, once prized above gold. Of course, this brooch has nothing to do with aluminium, but the thought helps us remember that each age had its own idea of progress, and that is how this piece should be seen. In that light, it remains a true representative of its time and of why we chose it.

Country of origin: unknown

Style: Empire - The Empire style, sometimes considered the second phase of Neoclassicism, is an early-19th-century design movement in architecture, furniture, other decorative arts, and the visual arts followed in Europe and America up to around 1830. The style originated in and takes its name from the period when Napoleon I ruled France, known as the First French Empire, where it was intended to idealize Napoleon's leadership and the French state. The style corresponds to the Biedermeier style in the German-speaking lands, Federal style in the United States and to the Regency style in Britain. An earlier phase of the style was called the Adam style in Great Britain and "Louis Seize" or Louis XVI, in France.
  -  See also: Empire or more info on styles

Style specifics: A style that borrowed style specifics from the ancient Greeks and the Roman empire (hence the name of the style: Empire). The empire period represents the second part of the Neo-Classical style, and shows a strong French influence. The style originated in the desire of Napoleon to revive the luxurious majesty of imperial Rome. Traditional classical motifs, already seen in the reign of Louis XVI, were supplemented by symbols of imperial grandeur- the emperor's monogram and his emblem, the bee; representations of military trophies; and after the successful campaigns in Egypt, Egyptian motifs. If we had to characterize this style briefly, we could focus on two elementary concepts: massiveness and symmetry.

Technique: Electroplating - Electroplating is a process of depositing a layer of any desired metal on another material by means of electricity. The term is also used for electrical oxidation of anions on to a solid substrate, as in the formation of silver chloride on silver wire to make silver/silver-chloride electrodes. Electroplating is primarily used to change the surface properties of an object (such as abrasion and wear resistance, corrosion protection, lubricity, aesthetic qualities), but may also be used to build up thickness on undersized parts or to form objects by electroforming. (From: Wikipedia)

Extra information: Bertel Thorvaldsen (19 November 1770 – 24 March 1844) was a Danish sculptor of international fame and medallist, who spent most of his life (1797–1838) in Italy. Thorvaldsen was born in Copenhagen into a Danish/Icelandic family of humble means, and was accepted to the Royal Danish Academy of Art when he was eleven years old. Working part-time with his father, who was a wood carver, Thorvaldsen won many honors and medals at the academy. He was awarded a stipend to travel to Rome and continue his education.

In Rome, Thorvaldsen made a name for himself as a sculptor. Maintaining a large workshop in the city, he worked in a heroic neo-classicist style. His patrons resided all over Europe.

Upon his return to Denmark in 1838, Thorvaldsen was received as a national hero. The Thorvaldsen Museum was erected to house his works next to Christiansborg Palace. Thorvaldsen is buried within the courtyard of the museum. In his time, he was seen as the successor of master sculptor Antonio Canova. His strict adherence to classical norms has tended to estrange modern audiences. Among his more famous public monuments are the statues of Nicolaus Copernicus and Józef Poniatowski in Warsaw; the statue of Maximilian I in Munich; and the tomb monument of Pope Pius VII, the only work by a non-Catholic in St. Peter's Basilica. (From: Wikipedia)

History of Electroplating
Modern electrochemistry was invented by Italian chemist Luigi Valentino Brugnatelli in 1805. Brugnatelli used his colleague Alessandro Volta's invention of five years earlier, the voltaic pile, to facilitate the first electrodeposition. Brugnatelli's inventions were suppressed by the French Academy of Sciences and did not become used in general industry for the following thirty years. By 1839, scientists in Britain and Russia had independently devised metal-deposition processes similar to Brugnatelli's for the copper electroplating of printing press plates.

Boris Jacobi in Russia not only rediscovered galvanoplastics, but developed electrotyping and galvanoplastic sculpture. Galvanoplastics quickly came into fashion in Russia, with such people as inventor Peter Bagration, scientist Heinrich Lenz and science fiction author Vladimir Odoyevsky all contributing to further development of the technology. Among the most notorious cases of electroplating usage in mid-19th century Russia were gigantic galvanoplastic sculptures of St. Isaac's Cathedral in Saint Petersburg and gold-electroplated dome of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow, the tallest Orthodox church in the world.

Soon after, John Wright of Birmingham, England discovered that potassium cyanide was a suitable electrolyte for gold and silver electroplating. Wright's associates, George Elkington and Henry Elkington were awarded the first patents for electroplating in 1840. These two then founded the electroplating industry in Birmingham from where it spread around the world. The Woolrich Electrical Generator of 1844, now in Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum, is the earliest electrical generator used in industry. It was used by Elkingtons.

The Norddeutsche Affinerie in Hamburg was the first modern electroplating plant starting its production in 1876.(From: Wikipedia)

engagement ring - Especially in Western cultures, an engagement ring is a ring indicating the that the person wearing it is engaged to be married. In the United Kingdom, and North America, engagement rings are traditionally worn only by women, and rings can feature gemstones. In other cultures men and women usually wear matching rings, which can be plain. In some cultures, engagement rings are also used as wedding rings.

Conventionally, the woman's ring is presented as a betrothal gift by a man to his prospective spouse while he proposes marriage or directly after she accepts his marriage proposal. It represents a formal agreement to future marriage. Rings can be bought by the man, the couple together, or by each partner for the other.

In North America and the United Kingdom, it is worn on the left hand ring finger, while in Poland and Ukraine, it is customary for the ring to be worn on the right hand. In Germany, the ring is worn on the left hand while engaged, but moved to the right hand when married. Similar traditions purportedly date to classical times, dating back from an early usage reportedly referring to the fourth finger of the left hand as containing the vena amoris or "vein of love".

In the 20th century, if he could afford it, the typical Western groom privately selected and purchased an engagement ring, which he then presented to his desired bride when he proposed marriage. More recently, couples frequently select an engagement ring together. (from Wikipedia)

Style: Art Nouveau - Art Nouveau (French for New Style) is an international movement and style of art, architecture and applied art - especially the decorative arts - that peaked in popularity at the turn of the 20th century (1890–1905).

  -  See also: Art Nouveau or more info on styles

Style specifics: Art Nouveau - Although Art Nouveau took on distinctly localised tendencies as its geographic spread increase some general characteristics are indicative of the form. A description published in Pan magazine of Hermann Obrist's wall-hanging Cyclamen (1894) described it as "sudden violent curves generated by the crack of a whip", which became well known during the early spread of Art Nouveau.

Subsequently, not only did the work itself become better known as The Whiplash, but the term "whiplash" is frequently applied to the characteristic curves employed by Art Nouveau artists. Such decorative "whiplash" motifs, formed by dynamic, undulating, and flowing lines in a syncopated rhythm, are found throughout the architecture, painting, sculpture, and other forms of Art Nouveau design.(from: Wikipedia)

Style specifics
This suite belongs to the 19th-century Italian micromosaic tradition, closely associated with Rome and with Grand Tour jewellery. Its red-ground mosaic panels combine very fine glass tesserae with early Christian symbolism, including doves, the Chi-Rho monogram, Alpha and Omega, grapes and wheat. The gold mounts, with their beaded, wirework and archaeological-revival details, reflect the 19th-century taste for jewels inspired by antiquity and early Christian art.

Source of inspiration
Early Christian iconography, as revived in 19th-century Roman micromosaic jewellery

Theme
Christian symbolism, with doves, the Chi-Rho monogram (one of the earliest monograms for Christ), Alpha and Omega (the beginning and the end), grapes and wheat, all referring to faith, eternity and the Eucharist.

Material
18K yellow gold with silver settings for the micromosaic panels
more info on precious metals

Technique
Micromosaic, a highly refined form of mosaic work in which minute pieces of coloured glass, known as tesserae, are set closely together to create detailed images. In 19th-century Rome, especially in the circle of the Vatican mosaic workshops, such work reached an exceptional level of precision. The tiny glass pieces, often made from drawn glass threads known as smalti filati, allowed craftsmen to create images with a painterly delicacy. In this suite, the micromosaic panels are set into silver trays within the gold jewels, with mother-of-pearl backing visible on the lower parts of the earrings.

Extra information
This suite belongs to the refined 19th-century Roman micromosaic tradition, closely associated with the mosaic workshops of Rome and the Vatican. Minute glass tesserae were used to create images of remarkable detail, often with a painterly delicacy. Jewels of this type were especially admired by travellers on the Grand Tour, and examples with early Christian iconography form a distinctive group within Italian micromosaic jewellery.

More background information on
Micromosaic jewels became especially admired in 19th-century Rome, where tiny pieces of coloured glass were arranged with extraordinary precision to form miniature images. The finest Roman micromosaic work was closely associated with the Vatican mosaic workshops, whose craftsmen developed an exceptional level of technical refinement. Many such jewels were acquired by travellers on the Grand Tour (the educational journey through Europe, especially Italy, undertaken by wealthy travellers in the 18th and 19th centuries), while trained mosaicists also supplied visitors from workshops and stands near the Spanish Steps, the heart of Rome’s foreign visitors’ quarter. This suite is particularly interesting because its decoration does not show the more common Roman ruins or floral subjects, but early Christian symbols such as doves, the Chi-Rho monogram, Alpha and Omega, grapes and wheat.

Hallmarks
The brooch bears a Vatican workshop stamp, showing the crossed keys beneath the papal tiara. The crossed keys are the keys of Saint Peter, symbolising the spiritual authority traditionally associated with the papacy, while the tiara refers to the papal office itself.

Country of origin
Either the Netherlands or "The Southern Netherlands" the former name for the current Belgium. (Belgium seceded from the Netherlands in 1831.)

Style
Georgian - Georgian style is the name given in most English-speaking countries to the set of styles current between 1720 and 1840. It is eponymous for the first four British monarchs of the House of Hanover—George I of Great Britain, George II of Great Britain, George III of the United Kingdom, and George IV of the United Kingdom—who reigned in continuous succession from August 1714 to June 1830.

Theme
Flemish Heart - One of the most peculiar and wide spread Flemish pieces of regional jewelry is a diamond heart pendant the so-called "Vlaams hart" (Dutch for “Flemish heart"). These hearts were fashionable in the 19th century and mostly made in gold backed silver (see also the silver on gold technique). A Flemish heart is a heart shaped field set with rose cut diamonds and/or senelles hanging under a crowning.

There are two sorts of crownings possible:
1) The crowing is a crown and then it is build up from horizontal, diamond embellished, tendrils that are resting on a smooth surfaced ajour cut band with flattened little rhombic bars. The tendrils from the top incline slightly over this ajour cut band towards the actual cross emphasizing the unity of the jewel.

2) The crowing as love trophy. A collection of four elements, a torch and quiver that are crossing each other, a bow that is horizontal mingled with them and all held together by a laurel. The slightly upwards direction of both ends of the bow refers to the St. Andrew's cross. Torch, quiver and bow are typical attributes to Amor (Eros) and the laurel refers to the triumph of love. This combination was already in use with the old Greek and Romans and later of course in the Renaissance and had a enormous success in France in the Louis XVI period (1774-1793).

Hallmarks
A Dutch hallmark representing the letter letter "v" (1814-1831) for foreign made articles given to be checked by the essay office (used from 1814 till 1831).
The V mark is best read as a dated milestone in the jewel’s later history. It indicates the piece was submitted within the Dutch control or duty context between 1814 and 1831, but it does not, by itself, date the making of the jewel.

The connotation is obviously sentimental, symbolic and romantic with reminiscent Gothic and/or Renaissance patterns and an abundant use of motifs like anchors, birds, branches, crosses, hearts and snakes.

  -  See also: Art Deco or more info on styles

Style specifics: Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period. Art Deco moved away from the soft pastels and organic forms of its style predecessor, Art Nouveau, and embraced influences from many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative.

Product story

This magnificent 18th-century cross pendant, with its origins likely in France or Belgium, is a splendid example of Rococo artistry. Fashioned from 18K yellow gold, it dates back to around 1750, a time when Rococo style flourished with its ornate and playful designs. The pendant is adorned with ten rose cut diamonds and senailles, set on foil to enhance their luster—a technique characteristic of the era. The cross symbolizes both divinity and the earthly realm, reflecting its Christian inspiration. This piece is not only a religious icon but also a testament to the intricate craftsmanship of the Rococo period.

It is frequently a representation of the division of the world into four elements (or cardinal points), or alternately as the union of the concepts of divinity, the vertical line, and the world, the horizontal line.

Technique
This jewel features a filigree decoration, which is in fact thin gold wire twisted into refined motifs, in this case elegant little balls. You can also notice the use of granulation on this piece. Granulation is a technique where the goldsmith uses very small balls (granules) of metal, which are not soldered to the piece but welded. Both techniques demand very high skills and precision from the maker.

Hallmarks
On the outside of the ring is a flowered V, alongside a stamp that somewhat resembles the italic letter 'i'. Additionally, there is a lozenge shape that could be a stamp, though it may also be a sign of damage. The V was used between 1817 and 1831 for smaller domestic works.

Extra information: Jade - Jade refers to an ornamental mineral, mostly known for its green varieties. It can refer to either of two different minerals: nephrite, a silicate of calcium and magnesium, or jadeite, a silicate of sodium and aluminium.

Jade is featured prominently in ancient Asian art, but also has an important place in many other cultures.

In the history of the art of the Chinese empire, jade has had a special significance, comparable with that of gold and diamonds in the West. Jade was used for the finest objects and cult figures, and for grave furnishings for high-ranking members of the imperial family. Due to that significance and the rising middle class in China, in 2010 the finest jade when found in nuggets of "mutton fat" jade – so-named for its marbled white consistency – could sell for $3,000 an ounce, a tenfold increase from a decade previously.

Jade may be enhanced (sometimes called "stabilized"). Some merchants will refer to these as grades, but degree of enhancement is different from colour and texture quality. In other words, Type A jadeite is not enhanced but can have poor colour and texture. There are three main methods of enhancement, sometimes referred to as the ABC Treatment System:
Type A jadeite has not been treated in any way except surface waxing.
Type B treatment involves exposing a promising but stained piece of jadeite to chemical bleaches and/or acids and impregnating it with a clear polymer resin. This results in a significant improvement of transparency and colour of the material. Currently, infrared spectroscopy is the most accurate test for the detection of polymer in jadeite.
Type C jade has been artificially stained or dyed. The effects are somewhat uncontrollable and may result in a dull brown. In any case, translucency is usually lost.
B+C jade is a combination of B and C: it has been both impregnated and artificially stained.
Type D jade refers to a composite stone such as a doublet comprising a jade top with a plastic backing.

Style: Art Deco - Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style which had its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century. The style originated in the 1920s and continued to be employed until after World War II. The term "art deco" first saw wide use after an exhibition in 1966, referring to the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes that was the culmination of high-end style moderne in Paris.

Extra background information: While this exquisite piece is only marked with Viennese hallmarks, the compelling visual similarities with designs showcased in a distinguished Boucheron tome strongly suggest its origins from a house of Boucheron's calibre. Notably, the jewel is crafted in 14K gold, unlike the typical 18K gold used in French pieces, aligning with the material standards of Vienna rather than Paris. This association is further reinforced by a photograph in the Boucheron book, an image strikingly similar to our watch, both of which are featured prominently among our collection photographs.

Extra on Boucheron: Boucheron - A leading French jewelry firm, founded in 1858 in the Palais Royal, Paris, by Frédéric Boucheron (1830-1902) and now having its main establishment at 26 Place VendOme, Paris, with branches in London and elsewhere. The London office, established in 1907, is at 180 New Bond St. In 1960 the firm at the request of the Shah of Iran, set up in Tehran the display of the Royal Jewelry Collection. Technique: Enamelling is an old and widely-adopted technology. The ancient Egyptians applied enamels to pottery and stone objects. The ancient Greeks, Celts, Russians, and Chinese also used enameling processes on metal objects. Enamel is the colorful result of fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 degrees Celsius. The powder melts and flows and hardens to a smooth, durable vitreous coating on metal, glass or ceramic. According to some sources, the word enamel comes from the High German word smelzan (to smelt) via the Old French esmail. Used as a noun, "an enamel" is a usually small decorative object, coated with enamel coating, such as a champlevé or a cloisonné (different techniques).
