Style
Art Deco - Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style which had its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century. The style originated in the 1920s and continued to be employed until after World War II. The term "art deco" first saw wide use after an exhibition in 1966, referring to the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes that was the culmination of high-end style modern in Paris. Led by the best designers in the decorative arts such as fashion, and interior design, Art Deco affected all areas of design throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including architecture and industrial design, as well as the visual arts such as painting, the graphic arts and film. At the time, this style was seen as elegant, glamorous, functional and modern.

Style specifics
Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period. Art Deco moved away from the soft pastels and organic forms of its style predecessor, Art Nouveau, and embraced influences from many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative.

Technique: Enamelling is an old and widely-adopted technology. The ancient Egyptians applied enamels to pottery and stone objects. The ancient Greeks, Celts, Russians, and Chinese also used enameling processes on metal objects. Enamel is the colorful result of fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 degrees Celsius. The powder melts and flows and hardens to a smooth, durable vitreous coating on metal, glass or ceramic. According to some sources, the word enamel comes from the High German word smelzan (to smelt) via the Old French esmail. Used as a noun, "an enamel" is a usually small decorative object, coated with enamel coating, such as a champlevé or a cloisonné (different techniques).

Extra information: Mellerio - François Mellerio (1772-1843) created the foundations of the current house, MELLERIO dits MELLER. Set up at 4, rue du Coq-Saint-Honoré (today rue Marengo), his establisment rapidly grew under the Empire, thanks to Empress Josephine who bought small items from him and attracted in her wake the Emperor's family, the new nobility and the old aristocracy standing together. In 1815 at the end of the Empire, he transferred the house to 22, rue de la Paix and in the following year went into partnership with his brother Jean-Jacques. Highly prized by the Orleans family, his most important customer, Mellerio was elevated, after the accession of the Duc d'Orléans to the throne in 1830, to the rank of official supplier to Queen Marie-Amélie, King Louis-Philippe and the royal family.

During the period of the economic crisis caused by the 1848 Revolution, the two brothers thought up the project of setting up an establissement in Spain, which was accomplished in 1850 with the opening of a shop in Madrid "Mellerio-Hermanos" which rapidly received large orders from Queen Isabelle II and the grandees of Spain. The Second Empire was one of the finest periods for the Mellerio house in Paris. Worthy heirs of their forebears François (born in 1943) and Olivier (born in 1945) the current managers are carrying on this high level of know-how, which warrants that the House is a member of the Comité Colbert and the High Jewelers of France.

Product story

This Art Deco pendant, with its geometric forms and abstract motifs, is a pristine example of 1920s Belgian design, crafted in luxurious platinum. A centrepiece old European cut diamond of 1.27ct is framed by 20 old cut brilliant diamonds, together weighing approximately 1.77 carats. Suspended on a platinum chain, it stands as an emblem of the period's glamour. Though devoid of marks, its quality is unmistakable, a celebration of April's birthstone and a silent witness to the Roaring Twenties' decadence.

This magnificent 18th-century cross pendant, with its origins likely in France or Belgium, is a splendid example of Rococo artistry. Fashioned from 18K yellow gold, it dates back to around 1750, a time when Rococo style flourished with its ornate and playful designs. The pendant is adorned with ten rose cut diamonds and senailles, set on foil to enhance their luster—a technique characteristic of the era. The cross symbolizes both divinity and the earthly realm, reflecting its Christian inspiration. This piece is not only a religious icon but also a testament to the intricate craftsmanship of the Rococo period.

Style
Rococo - Rococo (less commonly roccoco) also referred to as "Late Baroque" is an 18th century style which developed as Baroque artists gave up their symmetry and became increasingly more ornate, florid, and playful. Rococo rooms were designed as total works of art with elegant and ornate furniture, small sculptures, ornamental mirrors, and tapestry complementing architecture, reliefs, and wall paintings. It was largely supplanted by the Neoclassic style. In 1835 the Dictionary of the French Academy stated that the word Rococo "usually covers the kind of ornament, style and design associated with Louis XV's reign and the beginning of that of Louis XVI". It includes therefore, all types of art produced around the middle of the 18th century in France.

Style specifics
Rococo is a style of decoration that followed, c.1730, the baroque style in France (where it was also called rocaille), the principal features of which are asymmetry of ornament and a repertoire consisting to a considerable extent of rockwork, shells, flowers, foliage, and scrollwork. It was developed in France under Louis XV, 1715-74, and spread to Italy, Germany, and Austria and to a lesser extent to England.

Occurring during the time of the French Third Republic and the German Empire, the "Belle Époque" was named in retrospect, when it began to be considered a "golden age" the major powers of Europe, new technologies improved lives and the commercial arts adapted Renaissance and eighteenth-century styles to modern forms. Extra information: Diamond is the birthstone for the month of April, and besides being the most popular gemstone for engagement rings, it is also the anniversary gem for the 10th and 60th years of marriage.

Even though the diamond is the hardest of all gemstones known to man, it is the simplest in composition: it is common carbon. The ancient Greeks believed that diamonds were splinters of stars fallen to earth. It was even said by some that they were the tears of the Gods or perhaps crystallized lightning or hardened dew drops. The exact origin of diamonds remained something of a mystery for centuries.

In ancient times only kings wore diamonds as a symbol of strength, courage and invincibility. Over the centuries, the diamond acquired its unique status as the ultimate gift of love. It was said that Cupid's arrows were tipped with diamonds which have a magic that nothing else can ever quite equal.

But it wasn't until 1477, when Archduke Maximillian of Austria gave a diamond ring to Mary of Burgundy, that the tradition of diamond engagement rings began. Even the reason a woman wears it on the third finger of her left hand dates back to the early Egyptian belief that the vena amoris (vein of love) ran directly from the heart to the top of the third finger, left hand.

Diamonds: Two old European cut diamonds with a total weight of 1.99 crt. (one stone 1.00 crt. H/vs1, and the other 0.99 crt. I/Si2) see pictures for the certificates.

Style specifics: This is something between Belle Époque and Art Deco.
The Belle Époque (French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century from the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) and lasted until World War I (1914-18).

In the newly rich United States, emerging from the Panic of 1873, the comparable epoch was dubbed the Gilded Age. In the United Kingdom, this epoch overlaps the end of what is called the Victorian Era there and the period named the Edwardian Era.

In the Belle Époque cheap coal and cheap labour contributed to the cult of the orchid and made possible the perfection of fruits grown under glass, as the apparatus of state dinners extended to the upper classes; champagne was perfected during the Belle Époque. Exotic feathers and furs were more prominently featured in fashion than ever before, as haute couture was invented in Paris, the centre of the Belle Époque, where fashion began to move in a yearly cycle; in Paris restaurants such as Maxim's achieved a new splendour and cachet as places for the rich to parade, and the Opéra Garnier devoted enormous spaces to staircases as similar show places.

After mid-century, railways linked all the major cities of Europe to spa towns like Biarritz and Deauville; their carriages were rigorously divided into first-class and second-class, but the super-rich now began to commission private railway coaches, as exclusivity was a hallmark of opulent luxury. Bohemian lifestyles gained a different glamour, pursued in the cabarets of Montmartre.

Art Deco
Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period. Art Deco moved away from the soft pastels and organic forms of its style predecessor, Art Nouveau, and embraced influences from many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative.

Extra information: Betrothal rings were used during Roman times, but weren't generally revived in the Western world until the 13th century. The first well-documented use of a diamond ring to signify engagement was by the Archduke Maximilian of Austria in imperial court of Vienna in 1477, upon his betrothal to Mary of Burgundy.

Before the 20th century, other types of betrothal gifts were common. Before the end of the 19th century, the bride-to-be frequently received a sewing thimble rather than a engagement ring. This practice was particularly common among religious groups that shunned jewelry. Engagement rings didn't become standard in the West until the end of the 19th century, and diamond rings didn't become common until the 1930s. Now, 80% of the women are offered a diamond ring to signify engagement. (from: Wikipedia)

Product story

These Iberian Baroque earrings, crafted circa 1750 in rich yellow gold, display the exuberant spirit of their age. Their sculpted surfaces, with repoussé floral motifs at the reverse, frame glowing red garnets that catch the light with warmth and depth. The tiered composition, from square to pear-shaped elements, creates a sense of lively movement, typical of Spanish and Portuguese jewels of the eighteenth century. Each earring carries an echo of history: a graceful ornament once meant to sway with candlelight, now preserved as a testament to Baroque artistry and enduring elegance.

Style specifics
Baroque is a style in art and decoration that developed shortly before 1600 and remained current in Europe until the emergence of the Rococo style c.1730. It was started in Italy, and spread to Germany, Austria, the Low Countries, and Spain and Portugal, with only a somewhat severely classical version being popular in France under Louis XIV. The style was a development of the Renaissance style and is characterized by lively, curved, and exuberant forms, by vigorous movement, and by rich ornament, based on classical sources, being symmetrical as distinguished from the asymmetry of the following Rococo style.

Style
Between Victorian and Art Nouveau - Victorian decorative arts refers to the style of decorative arts during the Victorian era. The Victorian era is known for its eclectic revival and interpretation of historic styles and the introduction of cross-cultural influences from the middle east and Asia in furniture, fittings, and Interior decoration. Victorian design is widely viewed as having indulged in a regrettable excess of ornament.

The Arts and Crafts movement, the aesthetic movement, Anglo-Japanese style, and Art Nouveau style have their beginnings in the late Victorian era. Art Nouveau (French for New Style) is an international movement and style of art, architecture and applied ar - especially the decorative arts - that peaked in popularity at the turn of the 20th century (1890–1905).

The name "Art Nouveau" is French for "new art". It is also known as “Jugendstil”, German for "youth style", named after the magazine Jugend, which promoted it, and in Italy, Stile Liberty from the department store in London, Liberty & Co., which popularised the style. A reaction to academic art of the 19th century, it is characterized by organic, especially floral and other plant-inspired motifs, as well as highly stylized, flowing curvilinear forms.

Art Nouveau is an approach to design according to which artists should work on everything from architecture to furniture, making art part of everyday life.

Technique
Cameo is a method of carving, or an item of jewellery or vessel made in this manner. It features a raised (positive) relief image. There are three main materials for Cameo carving; Shells or Agate (called a Hardstone cameo), and glass. Cameos can be produced by setting a carved relief, such as a portrait, onto a background of a contrasting colour. This is called an assembled cameo. Alternately, a cameo can be carved directly out of a material with integral layers or banding, such as (banded) agate or layered glass, where different layers have different colours. Sometimes dyes are used to enhance these colours. Cameos are often worn as jewellery. Stone cameos of great artistry were made in Greece dating back as far as the 6th century BC. They were very popular in Ancient Rome, and one of the most famous stone cameos from this period is the Gemma Claudia made for the Emperor Claudius. The technique has since enjoyed periodic revivals, notably in the early Renaissance, and again in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

Extra information
The child’s features show no correspondence with any documented child portraits from Western royal families of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and no match was found in the known imagery from that period. The signature “A. v. Dongen” is not associated with royal commissions, and there is no archival link to any court artist. Portrait cameos of children were common personal keepsakes among affluent families, making it most likely a privately commissioned portrait of a non-royal child.

Signature
"A. v. Dongen" an otherwise unidentified artist with a Dutch surname.

Product story

This remarkable 16th/17th-century diamond cluster ring captivates with its historical charm and intricate craftsmanship. Likely of northwestern European origin, it features nine table-cut rose diamonds set on foil, reflecting the early advancements in diamond cutting during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The table cut, one of the first faceting techniques developed, is time-specific to this era and a key feature in jewellery from this period. The ring’s design embodies the spirit of its time, while the shank raises intriguing questions about whether it was born with the ring or replaced later in its long life. In the description below, we delve into the arguments surrounding this. Imagine owning and wearing a jewel that has endured for 400 years, carrying with it centuries of untold stories and moments in history.

Style
This ring exemplifies the stylistic essence of circa 1600, capturing the transitional zeitgeist of the time. While it doesn’t strictly belong to the Baroque or Renaissance movements, its design reflects the artistic trends and craftsmanship of that era. The piece resonates with the spirit of its time, blending elements from both periods without being distinctly tied to either.

The top part of the ring, dating to around 1600, showcases a use of stones that strongly links it to the era. However, it remains difficult to classify it as purely Baroque or Renaissance in style. Interestingly, the bottom part (shank) of the ring may be from a slightly later period, though this is not definitive. The hallmarks found on the shank provide further clues, suggesting the possibility of different timelines for the ring’s components, adding to its intrigue and historical depth.

Technique
The rose cuts are set on foil. This is a special technique that was used to bring the lustre of the diamonds to its best quality.

Extra information
As mentioned above, we cannot say with 100% certainty that the shank (also known as the band of the ring) originally belongs with the top part. It is not uncommon for the band to be replaced over time, and in this case, the gold color of the shank appears slightly more yellow compared to the reddish hue of the top part. However, this does not provide definite proof either, as the original goldsmith could have intended such a contrast. We will delve deeper into this in the section on the hallmarks.

Diamonds
Nine table cut rose cut diamonds. We do not have the weight of the diamonds which is normal in our trade when it comes to rose cuts.

- All diamonds, regardless of their size or shape, in our vintage and antique jewellery are verified as 100% natural by the IJGC laboratory.

- We do not sell lab-grown (synthetic) diamonds.

Birthstones
Diamond is the birthstone (or month stone) for April.
more info on birthstones

The hallmarks present on the shank include:

- A cornucopia (horn of plenty), used in the Southern Netherlands from 1815 to 1832, specifically for small gold works without attachments.
- A small Gothic "r," indicating a Belgian re-mark after 1830, applied to jewellery that was already in circulation before being submitted for re-inspection.
- An "L" with wavy lines above it, which stylistically suggests an 18th-century or potentially much earlier origin.

These hallmarks on the shank suggest a later date than the setting style and the use of table-cut rose diamonds would indicate. All of these marks are found (not unusually) only on the shank and not on the top part, so the assumption that the top part is older than the shank remains plausible.

Country of origin: Although it does not carry any legible control marks we believe this to be of French origin.

Style: Georgian - Georgian style is the name given in most English-speaking countries to the set of styles current between 1720 and 1840. It is eponymous for the first four British monarchs of the House of Hanover—George I of Great Britain, George II of Great Britain, George III of the United Kingdom, and George IV of the United Kingdom—who reigned in continuous succession from August 1714 to June 1830.

Technique: Filigree (formerly written filigrann or filigrane) is a delicate kind of jewel work made with twisted threads usually of gold and silver or stitching of the same curving motifs. It often suggests lace and French from 1660 to the late 19th century. It should not be confused with ajoure jewellery work; while both have many open areas, filigree involves threads being soldered together to form an object and ajoure involves holes being punched, drilled, or cut through an existing piece of metal. (from: Wikipedia)

cannetille: This specific filigree technique, which is the technique of twisting or plaiting a thin gold wire into refined motifs, was popular in traditional Spanish and Portuguese jewellery. It became hugely popular in London and Paris in the 1830’s.

This striking Art Deco watch, echoing the finesse and craftsmanship akin to Boucheron, hails from Vienna. Crafted in 14K bi-colour gold, it features beautifully detailed enamelling and a classic floral motif, set against the bold, geometric lines typical of the era. It's adorned with 42 old mine cut diamonds, together weighing approximately 1.30 carats. Celebrated not just for its beauty but also its history, this watch has been a highlight at exhibitions like the Antwerp Diamond Museum and DIVA, making it a prized piece for any collector.

Antique jewelry object group: ladies watch, pendant and brooch

Condition: very good condition
  -  (more info on our condition scale)

Country of origin: Austria (Vienna)

Style: Art Deco - Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style which had its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century. The style originated in the 1920s and continued to be employed until after World War II. The term "art deco" first saw wide use after an exhibition in 1966, referring to the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes that was the culmination of high-end style moderne in Paris.
  -  See also: Art Deco or more info on styles

Style specifics: Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period.

Extra background information: While this exquisite piece is only marked with Viennese hallmarks, the compelling visual similarities with designs showcased in a distinguished Boucheron tome strongly suggest its origins from a house of Boucheron's calibre. Notably, the jewel is crafted in 14K gold, unlike the typical 18K gold used in French pieces, aligning with the material standards of Vienna rather than Paris. This association is further reinforced by a photograph in the Boucheron book, an image strikingly similar to our watch, both of which are featured prominently among our collection photographs.

Extra on Boucheron: Boucheron - A leading French jewelry firm, founded in 1858 in the Palais Royal, Paris, by Frédéric Boucheron (1830-1902) and now having its main establishment at 26 Place VendOme, Paris, with branches in London and elsewhere. Frédéric Boucheron was succeeded by his son Louis (1874-1959), in turn succeeded by his son Gerard (b. 1910), whose son Alain (b. 1948) is now active in the business. The London office, established in 1907, is at 180 New Bond St. In 1960 the firm at the request of the Shah of Iran, set up in Tehran the display of the Royal Jewelry Collection. Boucheron is noted as a specialist in gems as well as a designer of luxury and medium-priced jewelry.

Period: ca. 1925
  -  (events and facts in 1925)

Source of inspiration: Mother Nature (see also: flower symbolism)

Material: 14K bi-color gold (yellow and white), although most of this jewel is in yellow gold, the diamonds are set in white gold. This finds it origin in a much older period (see explanation on silver on gold).
  -  (more info on precious metals)

Diamonds: 42 various old mine brilliant cut diamonds with a total estimated weight of approx. 1.30 crt.
Note: All diamond weights, color grades and clarity are approximate since the stones were not removed from their mounts to preserve the integrity of the setting.

Total diamond weight: approx. 1.30 crt.

The Belle Époque (French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century from the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) and lasted until World War I (1914-18).

Style
Victorian - Victorian decorative arts refers to the style of decorative arts during the Victorian era.

Style specifics
The Romantic Victorian Period - Experts divide the reign of Queen Victoria, also called The Victorian era (1837 - 1901) in to three periods of about twenty years each; The Romantic Victorian Period (1837 - 1860), The Grand Victorian Period (1860 - 1880), and the Late or Aesthetic Victorian Period (1880 - 1901).

We consider this to be of the Romantic Victorian Period. This period covers the coronation of Victoria as Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and her marriage to King Albert and their love, their devotion to their marriage and to their country are the sources of inspiration for this period. The jewels of this period are made of intricate carvings, special techniques where the enamel is subtly worked. These techniques allowed to give the jewel a certain opulence with less precious metal needed. As precious metals were really rare at that time. Highly favored (semi-) precious stones in this period are amethyst, coral, garnets, seed pearls and turquoises. The connotation is obviously sentimental, symbolic and romantic with reminiscent Gothic and/or Renaissance patterns and an abundant use of motifs like anchors, birds, branches, crosses, hearts and snakes.

As with this 18K yellow gold Victorian brooch, the Italian jewellery brand "Castellani" is a master in towing anyone along to an ancient place where time stood still. The white with blue centre is of exquisite detailed micro mosaic, composed in small square pieces of enamel threads -also called "smalti falti" in Italian. Various gold filigree patterns beam from around the archaic middle. In any means, the letters EY stand for a gesture of caress whether in Greek "Good Health" or in English "Eternally Yours".

Style: Victorian - Victorian decorative arts refers to the style of decorative arts during the Victorian era.

Style specifics: The Grand Victorian Period - Experts divide the reign of Queen Victoria, also called The Victorian era (1837-1901) into three periods of about twenty years each; The Romantic Victorian Period (1837 - 1860), The Grand Victorian Period (1860 - 1880), and the Late or Aesthetic Victorian Period (1880 – 1901).

We consider this to be of the Grand Victorian Period.

This second Victorian period is famous for its ostentatious pieces set with pearls and diamonds (from South Africa). From ca. 1850 wealthy English had reported about jewelry from India and Japan, which heavily inspired the jewelers of this period. This period also corresponds with the death of Queen Victoria's husband King Albert making mourning jewelry (set with heavy dark stones) the type of jewelry specific for this period.

Period: ca. 1880
  -  (events and facts in 1880)

Source of inspiration: Pompeii excavation - ancient city in southwestern Italy (destroyed in 79 A.D. by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius)

Theme: EY - Although the letters appear Latin in form, their meaning is Greek. “ΕΥ” (pronounced eu) means good or well, and was used in ancient Greece as a wish for good health or good fortune. In this context one could also read it as a romantic play on words, Eternally Yours, and for the more business-minded among us, it might even make a charming nod to Ernst & Young.

Material: 18K yellow gold

Extra information on the technique used
A "micro mosaic object" is a decorative object or architectural element made from relatively uniformly sized pieces of hard substances fitted together and embedded in a matrix of some adhesive or bonding substance that eventually hardens to hold the pieces in place. The word derives from the Greek word for the Muses, implying it is a form of artistic expression.

SMALTI FILATI: Filati means "thread" in Italian. Smalti filati literally means thread tesserae. The opaque enamel is heated and pulled out to make long thin strands shaped similar to spaghetti or linguini. These are then broken into shorter pieces called tesserae. These originated about mid 18th century at the Vatican Mosaic Workshops.

Smalti - Flat rectilinear tesserae made by pouring molten opaque colored enamel onto a steel slab, allowing it to cool, and then cutting it into small flat or cubed pieces called tesserae. The smalti are composed of silica, an alkaline substance such as soda or potash, lead, metal oxide coloring agents, and tin oxide for opacity. Opaque tesserae were desirable to avoid a shiny reflective surface when using mosaics as copies of paintings in St. Peter’s Basilica. Smalti means “enamels”(smalto means enamel) in Italian, but used in English as a singular term, enamel. We say micromosaics are made of enamel, not "enamels".

Support - The supportive backing for the mosaic, its material depending on the size of the art work. In small pieces such as jewelry, the backing was made of a metal such as a copper tray with a rim, or of glass, goldstone, or small plaques of marble, which were hollowed out to the proper depth to hold the mosaic. For larger scale pictures, the weight necessitated use of slate or marble, similarly hollowed out, or iron surrounded by a rim.

Take a look at the picture with the ruler in which we took a close up to show you the incredible degree of excellence of this micro mosaic.

Extra information on Castellani - Fortunato Pio Castellani (6 May 1794 - 1 January 1865) was a 19th century Italian jeweller and founder of Castellani, an Italian jewellery company.

Castellani opened his first shop in Rome in 1814. He specialised in recreating the jewellery of ancient craftsmen, particularly the Etruscans. Castellani based many of his designs directly on archaeological evidence and often incorporated intaglios, cameos and micromosaics into his jewellery. His work became very fashionable throughout 19th century Europe and his shop was frequented by grand tourists and aristocracy. The Castellani dynasty spanned three generations, and were also noted antiquarians.

Castellani's life
Castellani opened his first workshop in Rome in 1815. Initially, his designs reflected the fashions of the day and were generally based on French and English jewellery of the period. However, in the 1820s, Castellani began to develop the style for which he would become most famous. In collaboration with his friend and sponsor Michelangelo Caetani - later the Duke of Sermoneta and a noted archaeologist - Castellani began to draw inspiration from archaeological discoveries particularly those of the pre-Roman Estruscan culture.

In 1836, archaelologists discovered the Regolini-Galassi tomb, a particularly important Estruscan find that yielded a large amount of beautifully preserved jewellery. Because of his expertise in the field and his connections with Caetani, Castellani was enlisted as an advisor on the excavation. Much of the jewellery excavated was decorated with granulation - tiny specks of gold applied to the surface. This technique was unknown to 19th century jewellers and Castellani was inspired by the discoveries to rediscover the lost art.

In the 1850s, Castellani passed management of the family business to his two sons Alessandro (1824–83) and Augusto (1829–1914) in whose hands it continued to flourish. The family were keen collectors and in addition to their jewellery business they dealt and restored antiquities extensively. Castellani's main shop was immediately adjacent to the Trevi Fountain - one of Rome's most prestigious locations - and incorporated a museum of the family's collection.

And the Belle Époque style (Belle Époque is French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century and lasted until World War I. In the newly rich United States, emerging from the Panic of 1873, the comparable epoch was dubbed the Gilded Age. In the United Kingdom, this epoch overlaps the end of what is called the Victorian Era there and the period named the Edwardian Era.

Style
Baroque - Baroque is an artistic style prevalent from the late 16th century to the early 18th century in Europe. It is most often defined as "the dominant style of art in Europe between the Mannerist and Rococo eras, a style characterized by dynamic movement, overt emotion and self-confident rhetoric".

Product story

A rare survivor from around 1600, this transitional Renaissance to Baroque cluster ring embodies the discerning taste of early European connoisseurs. Crafted in yellow gold and silver, it holds nine table cut diamonds of exceptional calibre, their harmonious brilliance a testament to refined selection and mastery. Such uniform quality in stones of this period is extraordinarily rare, marking this jewel as one likely commissioned by a family of distinction. Rings of this type were not uncommon in their time and are frequently depicted in portraits of the late Renaissance and early Baroque period, where they adorned the hands of nobility and the well-to-do. If only jewels could speak, this ring would recount stories of lineage, prestige, and the dawn of diamond connoisseurship.

This jewel is part of Adin’s curated collection of early European masterpieces, representing over four centuries of jewellery history.

ring

Condition
Very good condition. The ring has been preserved with remarkable care, retaining its structural integrity and original character. The central diamond is secured by a pin running through its centre from the top and fixed with tin along the inner side, a technique entirely typical for this period. As a result, the stone can turn slightly, which is consistent with its age and method of setting. Minor traces of wear add to its authenticity and charm.
more info on our condition scale

Country of origin
Unknown. While no conclusive documentation exists, the refined craftsmanship and stylistic characteristics suggest that this jewel could have originated in one of the major European centres of the late Renaissance, such as Italy, the Southern Netherlands, or possibly Germany. Each of these regions was known for its mastery in early diamond setting and the subtle harmony of gold and silver work.

Style
It is uncertain whether this jewel should be classified as Renaissance or Baroque. What is relatively certain, however, is that it was created at the very moment when these two great styles met, a period of artistic transformation when classical restraint began to yield to movement and exuberance.

Style specifics
Baroque, which emerged shortly before 1600, evolved from the Renaissance tradition and flourished across Europe until the Rococo era around 1730. Originating in Italy and spreading through Germany, Austria, the Low Countries, Spain, and Portugal, it combined grandeur with vitality. Its sculptural lines, flowing ornament and sense of movement reflect the era’s fascination with light and emotion, in contrast to the balanced symmetry of Renaissance design and the later asymmetry of Rococo.

Period
Around 1600 marks the transition from the measured harmony of the Renaissance to the more expressive energy of early Baroque design. This was a time when craftsmanship flourished under the influence of both classical ideals and the emerging taste for opulence that would soon define the seventeenth century.

Technique
The table cut diamonds are set on foil, a refined technique used to heighten their brilliance and depth. By reflecting light through the carefully faceted stones, this method enhanced their luminosity even in candlelight, revealing the skill of the early diamond cutters and the jewellers who mastered this delicate art.

Extra information
The diamonds in this ring display an exceptionally high quality. In all our years in the trade, we have never encountered a jewel of this age set entirely with stones of such uniform and outstanding calibre.

Diamonds
Nine table cut diamonds. The exact weight of the stones is unknown, which is customary in our trade for early cuts. Each diamond was carefully selected for its clarity and proportion, and together they create a rare harmony of light. Such uniform quality in stones of this period is seldom encountered and reflects the exceptional taste and means of the original patron.

- All diamonds, regardless of their size or shape, in our vintage and antique jewellery are verified as 100% natural by the IJGC laboratory.

Birthstones
Diamond is the birthstone for April and has long been associated with strength, purity, and everlasting love. Its symbolism of constancy made it a cherished choice for jewels of sentiment throughout history, a meaning that still endures today.

Hallmarks
No hallmarks are present, which is not unusual for jewellery of this early period. Hallmarking systems were still developing around 1600 and often applied inconsistently across regions. The absence of marks therefore aligns with its age and craftsmanship rather than detracting from its authenticity.

Product story

Victorian, circa 1860, a French 18K gold perfume bottle cased in an openwork gold lattice, each junction set with a cabochon turquoise. A hinged turban cap lends an Ottoman inspired accent, in step with the Orientalist taste fashionable in Paris, in painting, dress, and the decorative arts, including the harem scenes of Ingres and Delacroix. Turquoise was named for its Turkish route into Europe, a link that suits the turban form rather well. The perfume aperture retains its removable gold applicator stopper for discreet dabbing behind the ears, an oddly intimate object that still suggests scent, skin, and a private ritual.

Style specifics
The Romantic Victorian period (about 1837 to 1860). Many experts divide the reign of Queen Victoria (1837 to 1901) into three broad phases: an early or Romantic period, a mid period sometimes called Grand Victorian, and a late or Aesthetic phase. We consider this piece to belong to the late Romantic Victorian years, close to the transition around 1860. Jewellery of this phase often combines sentimental motifs with historicising and exotic tastes, and favours rich surface work such as fine chasing, engraving, and occasional enamel. Turquoise was a popular accent, alongside stones such as coral, garnet, amethyst, and seed pearls.

Product story

A complete Victorian Roman micromosaic parure of this calibre is a rarity, making this an exceptional find beyond its documented maker. Crafted in 18K gold by Menichini Giacomo, this set embodies the finest Roman craftsmanship of its era. The intricate micromosaics, assembled with masterful precision, feature delicate floral compositions and symbolic beetles, set against exquisitely detailed goldwork. With its historical significance, exceptional artistry, and near-museum quality, this parure is not merely jewellery, but a true collector’s treasure—an enduring relic of the Grand Tour's golden age.

Product details

Antique jewelry object group
Parure (matching set of jewellery) consisting of a bracelet, brooch, and earrings.

Condition
Remarkably well-preserved, especially given its age and the delicate nature of micromosaic jewellery. As is not uncommon for micromosaic jewellery of this period, there are some small missing tesserae (tiny pieces of coloured glass or enamel used to create the mosaic) in various places, though they are not particularly noticeable.

The earrings were originally designed as dangling pieces that passed through the earlobe. The upper sections have been preserved, while the lower parts have been carefully and reversibly converted into clips. The only modification is the removal of the small loops that originally connected the two parts. Although all original components are still present, we have chosen not to restore them to their original state. This allows the future owner to decide whether to keep them as they are—with their historical evolution intact—or to have them restored to their original design, which remains easily possible due to the reversible nature of the alteration.

The original case bears the marks of its ± 170-year journey, adding to its historical authenticity.

Both the brooch and the bracelet feature a circular compartment on the reverse, sealed with glass. Each compartment measures approximately 24 mm in diameter and was likely intended to hold a personal memento, such as a lock of hair or a miniature keepsake. This delicate feature remains intact, adding to the historical charm of the set.

Style
The Victorian era (1837–1901) is characterised by an eclectic revival of historic styles and an increasing fascination with intricate craftsmanship and fine detailing. Influences from the Middle East and Asia became prominent in decorative arts, including jewellery, furniture, and interior design.

In jewellery, the Victorian period saw a remarkable diversity in design, evolving from sentimental and romantic motifs to bold, ornamental creations. The Arts and Crafts movement, the Aesthetic movement, Anglo-Japanese style, and Art Nouveau all have their origins in the later part of this era.

Style specifics
The Victorian era (1837–1901) is traditionally divided into three stylistic periods: the Romantic Victorian Period (1837–1860), the Grand Victorian Period (1860–1880), and the Late or Aesthetic Victorian Period (1880–1901).

This parure dates back to the Romantic Victorian Period, an era shaped by Queen Victoria’s reign and its strong emphasis on sentimental and symbolic jewellery.

Jewellery from this period is known for its intricate craftsmanship, including delicate carvings, fine enamelling, and innovative techniques that created an impression of opulence while using less precious metal, as gold and silver were relatively scarce.

Favoured materials included amethyst, coral, garnets, seed pearls, and turquoise, often set in designs with Gothic and Renaissance influences. Common motifs included anchors, birds, branches, crosses, hearts, and serpents, each carrying deep symbolic meaning.

Source of inspiration
This exquisite micromosaic parure is deeply connected to the Grand Tour, a cultural phenomenon that reached its peak in the 19th century. The Grand Tour was a traditional journey through Europe undertaken by wealthy young men, particularly from Britain and America, as a form of cultural education. Rome was a key destination, and visitors often purchased fine souvenirs to commemorate their travels.

Micromosaic jewellery, with its intricate craftsmanship and depiction of classical landmarks and motifs, became a highly sought-after memento among Grand Tour travellers. These pieces were typically commissioned from skilled Roman artisans, many of whom operated near the Spanish Steps and the Vatican Mosaic Workshop.

This parure, created in Rome in the second half of the 19th century, reflects both the artistic refinement and the growing demand for such jewellery during this period. While some micromosaic pieces were mass-produced due to their popularity, the quality of materials and execution in this parure indicate that it was commissioned from a highly skilled workshop, possibly in collaboration with renowned specialists.

Theme
This stunning micromosaic parure draws its inspiration from nature and classical decorative elements, both highly favoured in Victorian Grand Tour jewellery. The central motifs of intricately detailed flowers, insects, and ornamental patterns reflect the 19th-century fascination with botanical studies and the symbolism of nature.

The floral micromosaic in the centre of each piece showcases an exquisite arrangement of blossoms, meticulously crafted from tiny glass tesserae (small coloured glass or enamel pieces). These floral motifs often symbolised romantic devotion, beauty, and the fleeting nature of time, common themes in Victorian jewellery.

Additionally, the beetle micromosaic inlays on the earrings and bracelet add a further layer of meaning. Insects, particularly beetles, were admired for their associations with resilience, transformation, and eternal life—a theme deeply rooted in both Victorian and ancient Roman symbolism.

The overall symmetrical and ornate design, with delicate filigree-like goldwork, evokes the grandeur of Renaissance and Rococo influences, which were often revived in Victorian jewellery. This blend of naturalistic themes and historic revival styles makes this parure a true masterpiece of Grand Tour micromosaic jewellery, capturing both the artistry and sentimentality of its era.

Technique
This parure showcases the exceptional craftsmanship of 19th-century Roman micromosaics, a technique perfected in the Vatican Mosaic Workshops and widely popular during the Grand Tour era.

Micromosaics are created using tesserae (tiny pieces of coloured glass or enamel) that are carefully arranged to form intricate images. The technique used in this piece is known as smalti filati, where opaque enamel is heated and pulled into fine, thread-like strands, which are then cut into tiny segments to be meticulously placed in the design. This method allows for an extraordinary level of detail, mimicking the softness and depth of painted artworks.

The supporting structure for these mosaics varies depending on the scale of the work. In jewellery, tesserae were often set in gold, copper, or glass bases, ensuring durability while preserving the delicate artistry of the composition. The combination of vivid colours, precise execution, and harmonious composition makes this parure a prime example of 19th-century Roman micromosaic mastery.

More background information on
This parure is a significant piece of 19th-century Roman jewellery, both for its exceptional craftsmanship and its documented connection to Menichini Giacomo.

The master’s hallmark G136M, identified in archival records, confirms that this parure was crafted by Menichini Giacomo, a 19th-century Roman goldsmith.

While there is no known evidence that Menichini specialised in micromosaic jewellery, by the late 19th century, many goldsmiths in Rome collaborated with highly skilled micromosaic workshops to meet the growing demand for Grand Tour jewellery. The refined execution of this parure suggests that it was created in partnership with a specialised micromosaic atelier, rather than being the sole work of Menichini himself.

Despite his documented hallmark, there is no confirmed evidence that Menichini Giacomo personally produced micromosaics. Given the exceptional detail and craftsmanship of this parure, it was likely commissioned from a specialised Roman micromosaic workshop, rather than being the sole work of Menichini himself.

Unlike Castellani, who had well-documented micromosaic artists such as Luigi Podio, Menichini Giacomo's work remains relatively obscure. However, this parure’s refined execution places it among the finest Roman micromosaic jewellery of its time.

This makes the parure not only a stunning collector’s piece, but also an important historical record of the goldsmiths who contributed to the vibrant Roman jewellery trade of the 19th century.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Maurizio Fioravanti, an expert in 19th-century Roman jewellery, whose archival research confirmed the attribution of this hallmark to Menichini Giacomo. His expertise has provided invaluable insight into the historical significance of this parure.

Hallmarks
This parure bears the master’s hallmark G136M, attributed to Menichini Giacomo, a Roman goldsmith who worked from his home in Via di S. Lucia della Tinta. Although little is known about his broader body of work, this documented piece offers a rare glimpse into his craftsmanship.

The hallmark does not appear fully formed in a single location but has been stamped in multiple places. Based on these fragmented impressions, we have created a composite sketch, which can be seen in the accompanying photos.
