Style
Art Deco - Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style which had its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century. The style originated in the 1920s and continued to be employed until after World War II. The term "art deco" first saw wide use after an exhibition in 1966, referring to the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes that was the culmination of high-end style modern in Paris. Led by the best designers in the decorative arts such as fashion, and interior design, Art Deco affected all areas of design throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including architecture and industrial design, as well as the visual arts such as painting, the graphic arts and film. At the time, this style was seen as elegant, glamorous, functional and modern.

Style specifics
Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period. Art Deco moved away from the soft pastels and organic forms of its style predecessor, Art Nouveau, and embraced influences from many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative.

Theme
Mary. This pendant appears to depict the Virgin Mary in quiet profile, shown holding a lily, the flower traditionally associated with purity, innocence, and devotion. The image has the calm, reverent character often found in devotional jewellery, where Mary is not presented in dramatic form, but as a gentle and protective presence. In this jewel, the theme seems to unite faith, tenderness, and quiet contemplation within a small and intimate ornamental object.

Material
platinum (touchstone tested)

Technique
This pendant appears to use a cameo-like relief effect rather than a hand-carved cameo. The figure seems to have been formed in a pressed glass or glass-like material, creating the look of a cameo through contrast, profile, and softly modelled relief.

Product story

This Art Deco pendant, with its geometric forms and abstract motifs, is a pristine example of 1920s Belgian design, crafted in luxurious platinum. A centrepiece old European cut diamond of 1.27ct is framed by 20 old cut brilliant diamonds, together weighing approximately 1.77 carats. Suspended on a platinum chain, it stands as an emblem of the period's glamour. Though devoid of marks, its quality is unmistakable, a celebration of April's birthstone and a silent witness to the Roaring Twenties' decadence.

Technique
Granulation is a technique where the goldsmith uses very small balls (granules) of metal, which are not soldered to the piece but welded. This technique demand very high skills and precision from the maker. And filigree (formerly written filigrann or filigrane) which is a delicate kind of jewel work made with twisted threads usually of gold and silver or stitching of the same curving motifs. It often suggests lace and French from 1660 to the late 19th century. It should not be confused with ajoure jewellery work; while both have many open areas, filigree involves threads being soldered together to form an object and ajoure involves holes being punched, drilled, or cut through an existing piece of metal. Product story

A stylish pendant from about 1920, this delicate jewel blends the lingering poetry of Art Nouveau with the cleaner geometry that would soon define Art Deco. In yellow and white gold, it is designed as a dragonfly resting among reedmace, its wings picked out in softly shaded enamel and its body enlivened by a single seed pearl. Small in scale yet finely observed, it carries something of the stillness and light of waterside nature.

Theme
A dragonfly on reedmace.
The dragonfly has long held a place in art, folklore, and decorative design. In European tradition it was at times linked with darker superstition, while in Japan it became a far more positive emblem, associated with courage, strength, happiness, and the changing seasons.

In the decorative arts, and especially in Art Nouveau jewellery, the dragonfly became a beloved motif because of its lightness, elegance, and natural grace. Here, shown on reedmace, it evokes the quiet poetry of waterside nature.

Technique
Enamelling.
Enamelling is an ancient decorative technique in which powdered glass is fused to a surface by heat, creating a smooth and often richly coloured coating. It has been used in many cultures for centuries and became especially valued for the brilliance, delicacy, and variety it could bring to metalwork and jewellery.

In jewellery, enamelling made it possible to introduce colour, contrast, and fine ornamental detail in ways that paint alone could not achieve. Its lasting appeal lies in the combination of artistry, precision, and durability.

Style
Something between Art Deco and Belle Époque - Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style which had its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century. See also: Art Deco.

And the Belle Époque (French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century and lasted until World War I. Occurring during the time of the French Third Republic and the German Empire, the "Belle Époque" was named in retrospect, when it began to be considered a "golden age" the major powers of Europe, new technologies improved lives and the commercial arts adapted Renaissance and eighteenth-century styles to modern forms. In the newly rich United States, emerging from the Panic of 1873, the comparable epoch was dubbed the Gilded Age. In the United Kingdom, this epoch overlaps the end of what is called the Victorian Era there and the period named the Edwardian Era.

Style specifics
This is something between Belle Époque and Art Deco.
The Belle Époque (French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century from the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) and lasted until World War I (1914-18).

In the Belle Époque cheap coal and cheap labour contributed to the cult of the orchid and made possible the perfection of fruits grown under glass, as the apparatus of state dinners extended to the upper classes; champagne was perfected during the Belle Époque. Exotic feathers and furs were more prominently featured in fashion than ever before, as haute couture was invented in Paris, the centre of the Belle Époque, where fashion began to move in a yearly cycle; in Paris restaurants such as Maxim's achieved a new splendour and cachet as places for the rich to parade, and the Opéra Garnier devoted enormous spaces to staircases as similar show places.

After mid-century, railways linked all the major cities of Europe to spa towns like Biarritz and Deauville; their carriages were rigorously divided into first-class and second-class, but the super-rich now began to commission private railway coaches, as exclusivity was a hallmark of opulent luxury. Bohemian lifestyles gained a different glamour, pursued in the cabarets of Montmartre.

Art Deco
Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period. Art Deco moved away from the soft pastels and organic forms of its style predecessor, Art Nouveau, and embraced influences from many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative.

Diamonds
Two large pear shaped rose cut diamonds. with a total weight of 2.91ct (one is 1.45ct and the other 1.46ct)
Four rose cut diamonds. We have not removed the four other rose-cut diamonds from their settings, but estimate the two upper stones to be approximately 0.80 carats each and the two middle stones approximately 0.50 carats each, resulting in an estimated combined total weight of 2.60 carats.
The total weight of all six rose-cut diamonds in these earrings is therefore approximately 5.50 carats.

All diamond weights, colour grades, and clarity are approximate, as we generally do not remove stones from their settings to maintain the integrity of the piece. However, the two largest stones were taken out to obtain their exact weight, while the remaining four diamonds have been left in their settings.
All diamonds we offer are screened by the I.J.G.C. for whether they are natural or synthetic, and all diamonds in this jewel are 100% guaranteed to be natural.

Style specifics
Baroque is a style in art and decoration that developed shortly before 1600 and remained current in Europe until the emergence of the Rococo style c.1730. It was started in Italy, and spread to Germany, Austria, the Low Countries, and Spain and Portugal, with only a somewhat severely classical version being popular in France under Louis XIV. The style was a development of the Renaissance style and is characterized by lively, curved, and exuberant forms, by vigorous movement, and by rich ornament, based on classical sources, being symmetrical as distinguished from the asymmetry of the following Rococo style.

Style
Victorian - Victorian decorative arts refers to the style of decorative arts during the Victorian era. The Victorian era is known for its eclectic revival and interpretation of historic styles and the introduction of cross-cultural influences from the middle east and Asia in furniture, fittings, and Interior decoration. Victorian design is widely viewed as having indulged in a regrettable excess of ornament. The Arts and Crafts movement, the aesthetic movement, Anglo-Japanese style, and Art Nouveau style have their beginnings in the late Victorian era.

Style specifics
The Grand Victorian Period - Experts divide the reign of Queen Victoria, also called The Victorian era (1837 - 1901) into three periods of about twenty years each; The Romantic Victorian Period (1837 - 1860), The Grand Victorian Period (1860 - 1880), and the Late or Aesthetic Victorian Period (1880 - 1901).

We consider this to be of the Grand Victorian Period.

This second Victorian period is famous for its ostentatious pieces set with pearls and diamonds (from South Africa). From ca. 1850 wealthy English had reported about jewelry from India and Japan, which heavily inspired the jewelers of this period. This period also corresponds with the death of Queen Victoria's husband King Albert making mourning jewelry (set with heavy dark stones) the type of jewelry specific for this period.

Product story

Likely crafted in the late 16th to early 17th century, this devotional pendant evokes both awe and quiet grace. The enameled face of Christ, resting with eyes closed upon banded agate, is framed by a fine radiating halo and twisted gold border—details so delicately rendered they seem to hush the room. Its expression carries a tender solemnity, heightened by the golden tear beneath one eye. Thought to be of South Netherlandish or German origin, the piece transcends its time. A true museum-worthy jewel—yet still something one can hold, wear, and cherish across generations.

Possible Origin & Craftsmanship
While the precise provenance is unknown, stylistic features such as the twisted gold framing, enamel detailing, and devotional subject suggest a South Netherlandish or German origin. Such pendants were often privately commissioned and treasured for both their spiritual and artistic value. unknown

Style
Renaissance - The Renaissance (from the Italian Rinascimento, meaning “rebirth”) was a cultural awakening that began in 14th-century Florence and gradually swept across Europe. It marked a revival of classical ideals, inspiring artists, scholars and craftsmen to draw on the harmony and refinement of ancient Greece and Rome. Often seen as the bridge between the medieval world and the modern age, the Renaissance gave rise to astonishing innovations in art, architecture and learning. Its spirit of curiosity and elegance lives on in objects such as this jewel—where craftsmanship meets humanist sensibility. See also: Renaissance jewellery and Classicism, the measured application of ancient principles in design, celebrated for its restraint, balance and timeless beauty.
more info on styles

Style specifics
This pendant embodies the intimate side of Renaissance art—where devotion, symbolism and craftsmanship come together in miniature form. Unlike grandiose court jewels, this type of object was likely meant for private contemplation. The restrained palette, expressive enamelled features, and refined goldwork reflect the Renaissance fascination with classical serenity and spiritual grace. Particularly telling is the use of white enamel accented with black: a stylistic choice often seen in late 16th- to early 17th-century devotional jewellery, evoking purity, solemnity, and emotional depth.

Period
ca. 1580
Events & facts of this era, poetry of this era, fashion of this era.

Source of inspiration
Christianity

Theme
The pendant depicts the head of Christ with closed eyes, a subtle golden tear beneath his left eye, and a radiating halo that encircles the image like a crown of quiet light. The expression is one of stillness and surrender—capturing not just a religious icon, but a deeply human moment of suffering and grace. This intimate portrayal would have served as a focus for prayer, reflection, or remembrance.

Material 18K
Warm yellow gold, most likely 18K, shaped and finished with fine twisted wire and smooth bezels. The craftsmanship suggests a careful balance between decorative finesse and devotional sobriety—hallmarks of late Renaissance goldsmithing.
more info on precious metals

Technique
Enamelling is an ancient decorative art in which powdered glass is fused onto metal through high heat, creating a smooth, often luminous surface. Cultures from Ancient Egypt to Renaissance Europe embraced the technique for its durability and brilliance. In this pendant, the enamel is not merely decorative—it gives life to the features of Christ, enhancing both detail and emotion. The refined use of white with black accents speaks to a period taste for expressive restraint, typical of devotional jewels made in the late 16th to early 17th century.

Possible Function and Use
Given its scale, devotional subject and rear fitting, this pendant was likely worn close to the body—either on a chain or as part of a rosary. Such pieces were often gifted for milestones or worn during mourning, not for outward display but for inner solace. The radiating halo and single tear may symbolise divine light and human suffering in quiet unity.

Symbolism of the Tear
The tiny golden tear is an unusual and powerful touch. It may allude to the Lacrima Christi motif—“the tear of Christ”—a symbol of sorrow, compassion, and redemptive sacrifice. It adds emotional depth to the piece, beyond what one typically finds in jewellery of this kind.

Comparative Examples
Similar Christ-head miniatures in enamel appear in German and Flemish religious art and object design of the late 16th century, often linked to Jesuit influence or personal devotion in Counter-Reformation circles. While each example differs, the combination of agate, enamel, and twisted gold filigree is well documented in museum holdings, such as the Munich Residenz and certain pieces in the British Museum.

Precious stones
a single polished plate of banded agate

Hallmarks
No visible hallmarks remain, which is not unusual for a jewel of this age and likely private origin. Its construction and style, however, point towards skilled Renaissance-era goldsmithing from the South Netherlands or German regions.

Product story

A late 18th century Portuguese ring, its elongated silver head densely set with colourless stones traditionally described as Minas Novas, most probably rock crystal, mounted on a yellow gold hoop. The jewel belongs to a distinctive tradition of Portuguese jewellery in which foil-backed colourless stones were used to create a rich, luminous effect reminiscent of diamond-set jewellery.

Country of origin
Although it does not carry any legible control marks, we believe this ring to be of Portuguese origin, based on its form, construction and the type of colourless stones traditionally associated with Portuguese Minas Novas jewellery.

Style
Rococo, or late Rococo taste, with the asymmetrical and richly clustered ornament typical of much 18th century jewellery. In this ring the style is expressed less through scrollwork than through the lively arrangement of the foiled stones across the elongated oval head.

In jewellery of this period, Rococo taste often survived in richly set, light-reflecting forms, even when architecture and decorative arts were already moving towards Neoclassicism. The irregular yet balanced composition of this ring, with its large central stone and surrounding smaller stones, fits well within that late 18th century taste for brilliance, movement and ornamental abundance.

Technique
The colourless stones are set on foil, a technique used in antique jewellery to enhance reflection, brightness and depth before modern electric lighting. In this ring the foil backing plays an essential visual role, giving the stones the lively brilliance that made Minas Novas jewellery so desirable.

Minas Novas
The stones in this ring are traditionally described as Minas Novas, a term associated with Portuguese jewellery set with colourless Brazilian material. In the antique jewellery trade this name is often used for rock crystal, although historical and scholarly usage is not always completely uniform and may also be connected with other colourless stones from Brazil. For that reason we describe the stones cautiously as Minas Novas type stones, most probably rock crystal.

Precious stones
51 faceted colourless stones, traditionally described as Minas Novas and probably rock crystal, mounted to create the bright appearance of diamond jewellery.

Gemstones are often treated to improve their colour or clarity. The stones in this piece have not been tested for treatment unless otherwise stated.

Product story

A splendid example of Baroque artistry, this circa 1700 pendant exudes the era's characteristic dynamism and rich ornamentation. Originating from Belgium, its design is infused with the profound influence of Christianity, encapsulated in its central theme of the cross. Crafted in 14K yellow gold, the pendant features six table cut rose diamonds, set upon foil to enhance their brilliance—a testament to the ingenious techniques of the period. Its harmonious symmetry contrasts the later Rococo asymmetry, reflecting a deep reverence for classical forms and the intricate balance of the divine and the worldly.

Style
Baroque - Baroque is an artistic style prevalent from the late 16th century to the early 18th century in Europe. It is most often defined as "the dominant style of art in Europe between the Mannerist and Rococo eras, a style characterized by dynamic movement, overt emotion and self-confident rhetoric".

Style specifics: A style that borrowed style specifics from the ancient Greeks and the Roman empire (hence the name of the style: Empire). The empire period represents the second part of the Neo-Classical style, and shows a strong French influence. The style originated in the desire of Napoleon to revive the luxurious majesty of imperial Rome. Traditional classical motifs, already seen in the reign of Louis XVI, were supplemented by symbols of imperial grandeur- the emperor's monogram and his emblem, the bee; representations of military trophies; and after the successful campaigns in Egypt, Egyptian motifs. If we had to characterize this style briefly, we could focus on two elementary concepts: massiveness and symmetry.

Technique: Intaglio - An intaglio or engraved gem is a small gemstone, usually semi-precious, that has been carved, in the Western tradition normally with images or inscriptions only on one face. The engraving of gemstones was a major luxury art form in the ancient world, and an important one in some later periods. Strictly speaking, engraving means carving in intaglio, with the design cut into the flat background of the stone, but relief carvings, with the design projecting out of the background as in nearly all cameos, are also covered by the term. The activity is also called gem carving, and the artists gem-cutters. References to antique gems, and intaglios in a jewellery context, will almost always mean carved gems. (from: Wikipedia)

Product story

Designed as a stylised beetle, this Late Victorian brooch of circa 1880 has a quietly eccentric charm. Its reddish brown tiger’s eye body shows a subtle rose copper sheen as the light moves across it, while seed pearls and red stone eyes add small points of brightness. Made in gilded silver, with time-softened wear to the gilding, it reflects the 19th-century delight in nature, exoticism and imaginative jewel design.

Style
Late Victorian - The Late Victorian period was marked by a rich and eclectic taste, combining historical revival styles with cross-cultural influences from the Middle East and Asia. In jewellery, this often resulted in imaginative designs, naturalistic motifs, symbolic subjects and a taste for unusual materials and colour contrasts.

Insect jewels, including beetles and scarab-inspired forms, fitted particularly well within this late 19th-century fascination with nature, exoticism and decorative invention. The use of tiger’s eye, seed pearls and coloured stone accents gives this brooch the playful yet refined character often associated with Late Victorian jewellery.

Country of origin: France

Style: Art Deco - Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style which had its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century.
  -  See also: Art Deco or more info on styles

Style specifics: Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period.

Condition: excellent condition
  -  (more info on our condition scale)

Country of origin: Although it does not carry any legible control marks we believe this to be of Belgian origin.

Style: Although most people would call this style Art Deco it is more considered to be a product of the fifties of the Twentieth Century. Strongly influenced by Art Deco but also by the Retro style. That to most people this is Art Deco is no coincidence as both Retro style and Fifties style are the style successors of Art Deco. or more info on styles

Style specifics: This type of jewelry is very specific for the fifties of the twentieth century. The Art Deco period preceded only 20 years and was still used as source of inspiration, it is (even for the trained eye) sometimes very hard to note the difference between Art Deco and Fifties.

Period: ca. 1950

Material: platinum

Extra information: Diamond is the birthstone for the month of April, and besides being the most popular gemstone for engagement rings, it is also the anniversary gem for the 10th and 60th years of marriage.

Even though the diamond is the hardest of all gemstones known to man, it is the simplest in composition: it is common carbon. The ancient Greeks believed that diamonds were splinters of stars fallen to earth. It was even said by some that they were the tears of the Gods or perhaps crystallized lightning or hardened dew drops. The exact origin of diamonds remained something of a mystery for centuries.

In ancient times only kings wore diamonds as a symbol of strength, courage and invincibility. Over the centuries, the diamond acquired its unique status as the ultimate gift of love. It was said that Cupid's arrows were tipped with diamonds which have a magic that nothing else can ever quite equal.

But it wasn't until 1477, when Archduke Maximillian of Austria gave a diamond ring to Mary of Burgundy, that the tradition of diamond engagement rings began. Even the reason a woman wears it on the third finger of her left hand dates back to the early Egyptian belief that the vena amoris (vein of love) ran directly from the heart to the top of the third finger, left hand.

Diamond(s): One brilliant cut diamond with an estimated weight of ± 0.40ct. (colour and clarity: F/G, vs/si).
Two brilliant cut diamonds with an estimated weight of ± 0.44ct. (colour and clarity: F/H, vs/si).
Four brilliant cut diamonds with an estimated weight of ± 0.28ct. (colour and clarity: F/H, vs/si).
22 brilliant cut diamonds with an estimated weight of ± 0.66ct. (colour and clarity: F/G, vs/si).
- All diamond weights, color grades and clarity are approximate since the stones were not removed from their mounts to preserve the integrity of the setting.

The Belle Époque (French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century from the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) and lasted until World War I (1914-18).

Bohemian lifestyles gained a different glamour, pursued in the cabarets of Montmartre.

engagement ring - Especially in Western cultures, an engagement ring is a ring indicating the that the person wearing it is engaged to be married. In the United Kingdom, and North America, engagement rings are traditionally worn only by women, and rings can feature gemstones. In other cultures men and women usually wear matching rings, which can be plain. In some cultures, engagement rings are also used as wedding rings.

Conventionally, the woman's ring is presented as a betrothal gift by a man to his prospective spouse while he proposes marriage or directly after she accepts his marriage proposal. It represents a formal agreement to future marriage. Rings can be bought by the man, the couple together, or by each partner for the other.

In North America and the United Kingdom, it is worn on the left hand ring finger, while in Poland and Ukraine, it is customary for the ring to be worn on the right hand. In Germany, the ring is worn on the left hand while engaged, but moved to the right hand when married. Similar traditions purportedly date to classical times, dating back from an early usage reportedly referring to the fourth finger of the left hand as containing the vena amoris or "vein of love".

Betrothal rings were used during Roman times, but weren't generally revived in the Western world until the 13th century. The first well-documented use of a diamond ring to signify engagement was by the Archduke Maximilian of Austria in imperial court of Vienna in 1477, upon his betrothal to Mary of Burgundy.

In the 20th century, if he could afford it, the typical Western groom privately selected and purchased an engagement ring, which he then presented to his desired bride when he proposed marriage. More recently, couples frequently select an engagement ring together. (from Wikipedia)

Diamond is the birthstone for the month of April, and besides being the most popular gemstone for engagement rings, it is also the anniversary gem for the 10th and 60th years of marriage.

This ring, a harmonious blend of fifties flair and Art Deco's geometric elegance, tells a tale of timeless commitment. Crafted around 1950, it carries the era's spirit, touching the threshold of Retro and Art Deco styles with its platinum gleam and bold design. At its heart, a 2.20 carat untreated emerald, encircled by 14 old mine-cut diamonds totalling approximately 2.24 carat, whispers stories of ancient Roman betrothals and the enduring tradition of engagement rings that became standardised with diamonds in the West around the 1930s. Each stone is a testament to natural beauty and authenticity, echoing a history of love's promise.

Extra information:
Betrothal rings were used in Roman times but only regained popularity in the Western world from the 13th century onward. The first recorded use of a diamond engagement ring was by Archduke Maximilian of Austria in 1477. Before the 20th century, other forms of betrothal gifts, such as sewing thimbles, were often used, particularly in religious communities that avoided jewellery. Diamond rings became widespread from the 1930s onward. Today, around 80% of women receive a diamond engagement ring. (from: Wikipedia)

Precious stones:
• 1 emerald, estimated weight approx. 2.20 carat (natural and untreated)
• 14 old mine brilliant cut diamonds, estimated total weight approx. 2.24 carat (average colour and clarity: H/J, VS/I)

Weight, colour and clarity were assessed while the stones remained set, in order to maintain the jewel’s original condition. The values given should therefore be considered expert approximations.
Every diamond in our antique and vintage jewellery has been examined and confirmed as 100% natural by the IJGC laboratory.

Product story

Victorian, circa 1860, a French 18K gold perfume bottle cased in an openwork gold lattice, each junction set with a cabochon turquoise. A hinged turban cap lends an Ottoman inspired accent, in step with the Orientalist taste fashionable in Paris, in painting, dress, and the decorative arts, including the harem scenes of Ingres and Delacroix. Turquoise was named for its Turkish route into Europe, a link that suits the turban form rather well. The perfume aperture retains its removable gold applicator stopper for discreet dabbing behind the ears, an oddly intimate object that still suggests scent, skin, and a private ritual.

Style specifics
The Romantic Victorian period (about 1837 to 1860). Many experts divide the reign of Queen Victoria (1837 to 1901) into three broad phases: an early or Romantic period, a mid period sometimes called Grand Victorian, and a late or Aesthetic phase. We consider this piece to belong to the late Romantic Victorian years, close to the transition around 1860. Jewellery of this phase often combines sentimental motifs with historicising and exotic tastes, and favours rich surface work such as fine chasing, engraving, and occasional enamel. Turquoise was a popular accent, alongside stones such as coral, garnet, amethyst, and seed pearls.

Product story

A complete Victorian Roman micromosaic parure of this calibre is a rarity, making this an exceptional find beyond its documented maker. Crafted in 18K gold by Menichini Giacomo, this set embodies the finest Roman craftsmanship of its era. The intricate micromosaics, assembled with masterful precision, feature delicate floral compositions and symbolic beetles, set against exquisitely detailed goldwork. With its historical significance, exceptional artistry, and near-museum quality, this parure is not merely jewellery, but a true collector’s treasure—an enduring relic of the Grand Tour's golden age.

Product details

Antique jewelry object group
Parure (matching set of jewellery) consisting of a bracelet, brooch, and earrings.

Condition
Remarkably well-preserved, especially given its age and the delicate nature of micromosaic jewellery. As is not uncommon for micromosaic jewellery of this period, there are some small missing tesserae (tiny pieces of coloured glass or enamel used to create the mosaic) in various places, though they are not particularly noticeable.

The earrings were originally designed as dangling pieces that passed through the earlobe. The upper sections have been preserved, while the lower parts have been carefully and reversibly converted into clips. The only modification is the removal of the small loops that originally connected the two parts. Although all original components are still present, we have chosen not to restore them to their original state. This allows the future owner to decide whether to keep them as they are—with their historical evolution intact—or to have them restored to their original design, which remains easily possible due to the reversible nature of the alteration.

The original case bears the marks of its ± 170-year journey, adding to its historical authenticity.

Both the brooch and the bracelet feature a circular compartment on the reverse, sealed with glass. Each compartment measures approximately 24 mm in diameter and was likely intended to hold a personal memento, such as a lock of hair or a miniature keepsake. This delicate feature remains intact, adding to the historical charm of the set.

Style
The Victorian era (1837–1901) is characterised by an eclectic revival of historic styles and an increasing fascination with intricate craftsmanship and fine detailing. Influences from the Middle East and Asia became prominent in decorative arts, including jewellery, furniture, and interior design.

In jewellery, the Victorian period saw a remarkable diversity in design, evolving from sentimental and romantic motifs to bold, ornamental creations. The Arts and Crafts movement, the Aesthetic movement, Anglo-Japanese style, and Art Nouveau all have their origins in the later part of this era.

Style specifics
The Victorian era (1837–1901) is traditionally divided into three stylistic periods: the Romantic Victorian Period (1837–1860), the Grand Victorian Period (1860–1880), and the Late or Aesthetic Victorian Period (1880–1901).

This parure dates back to the Romantic Victorian Period, an era shaped by Queen Victoria’s reign and its strong emphasis on sentimental and symbolic jewellery.

Jewellery from this period is known for its intricate craftsmanship, including delicate carvings, fine enamelling, and innovative techniques that created an impression of opulence while using less precious metal, as gold and silver were relatively scarce.

Favoured materials included amethyst, coral, garnets, seed pearls, and turquoise, often set in designs with Gothic and Renaissance influences. Common motifs included anchors, birds, branches, crosses, hearts, and serpents, each carrying deep symbolic meaning.

Source of inspiration
This exquisite micromosaic parure is deeply connected to the Grand Tour, a cultural phenomenon that reached its peak in the 19th century. The Grand Tour was a traditional journey through Europe undertaken by wealthy young men, particularly from Britain and America, as a form of cultural education. Rome was a key destination, and visitors often purchased fine souvenirs to commemorate their travels.

Micromosaic jewellery, with its intricate craftsmanship and depiction of classical landmarks and motifs, became a highly sought-after memento among Grand Tour travellers. These pieces were typically commissioned from skilled Roman artisans, many of whom operated near the Spanish Steps and the Vatican Mosaic Workshop.

This parure, created in Rome in the second half of the 19th century, reflects both the artistic refinement and the growing demand for such jewellery during this period. While some micromosaic pieces were mass-produced due to their popularity, the quality of materials and execution in this parure indicate that it was commissioned from a highly skilled workshop, possibly in collaboration with renowned specialists.

Theme
This stunning micromosaic parure draws its inspiration from nature and classical decorative elements, both highly favoured in Victorian Grand Tour jewellery. The central motifs of intricately detailed flowers, insects, and ornamental patterns reflect the 19th-century fascination with botanical studies and the symbolism of nature.

The floral micromosaic in the centre of each piece showcases an exquisite arrangement of blossoms, meticulously crafted from tiny glass tesserae (small coloured glass or enamel pieces). These floral motifs often symbolised romantic devotion, beauty, and the fleeting nature of time, common themes in Victorian jewellery.

Additionally, the beetle micromosaic inlays on the earrings and bracelet add a further layer of meaning. Insects, particularly beetles, were admired for their associations with resilience, transformation, and eternal life—a theme deeply rooted in both Victorian and ancient Roman symbolism.

The overall symmetrical and ornate design, with delicate filigree-like goldwork, evokes the grandeur of Renaissance and Rococo influences, which were often revived in Victorian jewellery. This blend of naturalistic themes and historic revival styles makes this parure a true masterpiece of Grand Tour micromosaic jewellery, capturing both the artistry and sentimentality of its era.

Technique
This parure showcases the exceptional craftsmanship of 19th-century Roman micromosaics, a technique perfected in the Vatican Mosaic Workshops and widely popular during the Grand Tour era.

Micromosaics are created using tesserae (tiny pieces of coloured glass or enamel) that are carefully arranged to form intricate images. The technique used in this piece is known as smalti filati, where opaque enamel is heated and pulled into fine, thread-like strands, which are then cut into tiny segments to be meticulously placed in the design. This method allows for an extraordinary level of detail, mimicking the softness and depth of painted artworks.

The supporting structure for these mosaics varies depending on the scale of the work. In jewellery, tesserae were often set in gold, copper, or glass bases, ensuring durability while preserving the delicate artistry of the composition. The combination of vivid colours, precise execution, and harmonious composition makes this parure a prime example of 19th-century Roman micromosaic mastery.

More background information on
This parure is a significant piece of 19th-century Roman jewellery, both for its exceptional craftsmanship and its documented connection to Menichini Giacomo.

The master’s hallmark G136M, identified in archival records, confirms that this parure was crafted by Menichini Giacomo, a 19th-century Roman goldsmith.

While there is no known evidence that Menichini specialised in micromosaic jewellery, by the late 19th century, many goldsmiths in Rome collaborated with highly skilled micromosaic workshops to meet the growing demand for Grand Tour jewellery. The refined execution of this parure suggests that it was created in partnership with a specialised micromosaic atelier, rather than being the sole work of Menichini himself.

Despite his documented hallmark, there is no confirmed evidence that Menichini Giacomo personally produced micromosaics. Given the exceptional detail and craftsmanship of this parure, it was likely commissioned from a specialised Roman micromosaic workshop, rather than being the sole work of Menichini himself.

Unlike Castellani, who had well-documented micromosaic artists such as Luigi Podio, Menichini Giacomo's work remains relatively obscure. However, this parure’s refined execution places it among the finest Roman micromosaic jewellery of its time.

This makes the parure not only a stunning collector’s piece, but also an important historical record of the goldsmiths who contributed to the vibrant Roman jewellery trade of the 19th century.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Maurizio Fioravanti, an expert in 19th-century Roman jewellery, whose archival research confirmed the attribution of this hallmark to Menichini Giacomo. His expertise has provided invaluable insight into the historical significance of this parure.

Hallmarks
This parure bears the master’s hallmark G136M, attributed to Menichini Giacomo, a Roman goldsmith who worked from his home in Via di S. Lucia della Tinta. Although little is known about his broader body of work, this documented piece offers a rare glimpse into his craftsmanship.

The hallmark does not appear fully formed in a single location but has been stamped in multiple places. Based on these fragmented impressions, we have created a composite sketch, which can be seen in the accompanying photos.

Style: Something between Art Deco and Belle Époque - Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style which had its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century. The style originated in the 1920s and continued to be employed until after World War II. The term "art deco" first saw wide use after an exhibition in 1966, referring to the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes that was the culmination of high-end style moderne in Paris.

Style specifics: This is something between Belle Époque and Art Deco.
The Belle Époque (French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century from the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) and lasted until World War I (1914-18).
